Comparison of Partial Least Squares Regression Method Algorithms: Nipals and PLS-Kernel and An Application
AbstractPartial Least Squares Regression (PLSR) is a multivariate statistical method that consists of partial least squares and multiple linear regression analysis. Explanatory variables, X, having multicollinearity are reduced to components which explain the great amount of covariance between explanatory and response variable. These components are few in number and they don't have multicollinearity problem. Then multiple linear regression analysis is applied to those components to model the response variable Y. There are various PLSR algorithms. In this study NIPALS and PLS-Kernel algorithms will be studied and illustrated on a real data se
Advanced spectrophotometric chemometric methods for resolving the binary mixture of doxylamine succinate and pyridoxine hydrochloride
The prediction power of partial least squares (PLS) and multivariate curve resolution-alternating least squares (MCR-ALS) methods have been studied for simultaneous quantitative analysis of the binary drug combination – doxylamine succinate and pyridoxine hydrochloride. Analysis of first-order UV overlapped spectra was performed using different PLS models – classical PLS1 and PLS2 as well as partial robust M-regression (PRM). These linear models were compared to MCR-ALS with equality and correlation constraints (MCR-ALS-CC). All techniques operated within the full spectral region and extracted maximum information for the drugs analysed. The developed chemometric methods were validated on external sample sets and were applied to the analyses of pharmaceutical formulations. The obtained statistical parameters were satisfactory for calibration and validation sets. All developed methods can be successfully applied for simultaneous spectrophotometric determination of doxylamine and pyridoxine both in laboratory-prepared mixtures and commercial dosage forms
Mir Masoom Ali: A Distinguished and Dedicated Statistician Who Never Gets Old – Even at Seventy-Five
I first met Distinguished Professor Dr. Mir Masoom Ali at the International Conference on Mathematics and Statistics held in Athens, Greece in 2007. He was there as an invited speaker and he also chaired my session. After my session we had a chance to chat on our way to the restaurant where the banquet was held. Even though it was the first time we hadmet, he was very kind to me. He was there with his wife Firoza (Leena) Ali. They looked great together. Family is the most important part of our lives. It was immediately apparent to me that Professor Ali, apart from being an outstanding statistician and a great teacher, is also a dedicated husband, father and grandfather. We have always kept in touch since our first meeting. I am very lucky to have had a chance to recently collaborate with him in a research paper.
