Economic Development Potential Of The Krakow Region
Analyzing economic development potential and activities in a region requires identifying factors essential for a successful strategy and analyzing the locale in terms of its resources and relative position within a broader economic environment. In order to examine Krakow’s opportunities and steps already taken, it is necessary to analyze the region’s strengths and weaknesses and relate the findings to academic theories on high technology’s role in economic development and then evaluate the results in the context of Poland. The Krakow Region, located in southern Poland, prides itself as a dynamically developing center of advanced technologies and unmatched business climate. High technology, or high-tech economic development, has been incorporated into regional plans and strategies as most promising component of the region’s development. Hence, this paper’s intention is to look at the process of economic development based on high technology and compare the theoretic findings with the reality and practice of the Region of Krakow. The analysis presented in this paper identifies the region’s strengths and weaknesses. It is found that despite the academic potential and multiple efforts to stimulate economic development based on advanced technologies, Krakow faces considerable challenges. These are the leadership of Warsaw, weak relationships between business and science and, consequently, insufficient application of research outcomes to economic practice. Recommendations to overcome these threats and weaknesses are presented in the final section

Nine years of multi-frequency monitoring of the blazar PKS 0048-097: spectral and temporal variability
Blazars are highly variable, radio-loud active galactic nuclei with jets
oriented at a small angle to the line of sight. The observed emission of these
sources covers the whole electromagnetic spectrum from radio frequencies up to
the high or even very high energy gamma-ray range. To understand the complex
physics of these objects, multi-wavelength observations and studies on the
variability and correlations between different wavelengths are therefore
essential. The long-term multi-frequency observations of PKS 0048-097 are
analysed here to investigate its spectral and temporal features. The studies
includes nine years of observations of the blazar, which is well studied in the
optical and radio domain, but not in the other frequencies. Multi-wavelength
data collected with OVRO, KAIT, Catalina, Swift/UVOT, Swift/XRT and Fermi/LAT
were studied. The performed analysis revealed strong variability in all
wavelengths that is most clearly manifested in the X-ray range. The correlation
studies do not exhibit any relation between different wavelengths, except for
the very strong positive correlation between the optical emission in V and R
bands.Comment: 11 pages, 7 figures, published in A&
An Empirical Study Of Productivity Growth In EU28 - Spatial Panel Analysis
This paper investigates the spatial process of productivity growth in the European Union on the foundations of the theory of New Economic Geography. The proposed model is based on the study of NUTS 2 regions and takes into consideration a spatial weights matrix in order to better describe the structure of spatial dependence between EU regions. Furthermore, our paper attempts to investigate the applicability of some new approaches to spatial modelling including parameterization of the spatial weights matrix. Our study presents an application of the spatial panel model with fixed effects to Fingleton’s theoretical framework. We suggest that the applied approach constitutes an innovation to spatial econometric studies providing additional information hence, a deeper analysis of the investigated problem
