Urocortin Neuropeptide Levels Are Impaired in the PBMCs of Overweight Children
The corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH) and urocortins (UCNs) have been implicated in energy homeostasis and the cellular stress response. However, the expression of these neuropeptides in children remains unclear. Therefore, we determined the impact of obesity on their expression in 40 children who were normal weight, overweight, and had obesity. Peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) and plasma were used to assess the expression of neuropeptides. THP1 cells were treated with 25 mM glucose and 200 µM palmitate, and gene expression was measured by real-time polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). Transcript levels of neuropeptides were decreased in PBMCs from children with increased body mass index as indicated by a significant decrease in UCN1, UCN3, and CRH mRNA in overweight and obese children. UCN3 mRNA expression was strongly correlated with UCN1, UCN2, and CRH. Exposure of THP1 cells to palmitate or a combination of high glucose and palmitate for 24 h increased CRH, UCN2, and UCN3 mRNA expression with concomitant increased levels of inflammatory and endoplasmic reticulum stress markers, suggesting a crosstalk between these neuropeptides and the cellular stress response. The differential impairment of the transcript levels of CRH and UCNs in PBMCs from overweight and obese children highlights their involvement in obesity-related metabolic and cellular stress
Consanguinity and reproductive health among Arabs
Consanguineous marriages have been practiced since the early existence of modern humans. Until now consanguinity is widely practiced in several global communities with variable rates depending on religion, culture, and geography. Arab populations have a long tradition of consanguinity due to socio-cultural factors. Many Arab countries display some of the highest rates of consanguineous marriages in the world, and specifically first cousin marriages which may reach 25-30% of all marriages. In some countries like Qatar, Yemen, and UAE, consanguinity rates are increasing in the current generation. Research among Arabs and worldwide has indicated that consanguinity could have an effect on some reproductive health parameters such as postnatal mortality and rates of congenital malformations. The association of consanguinity with other reproductive health parameters, such as fertility and fetal wastage, is controversial. The main impact of consanguinity, however, is an increase in the rate of homozygotes for autosomal recessive genetic disorders. Worldwide, known dominant disorders are more numerous than known recessive disorders. However, data on genetic disorders in Arab populations as extracted from the Catalogue of Transmission Genetics in Arabs (CTGA) database indicate a relative abundance of recessive disorders in the region that is clearly associated with the practice of consanguinity
Looking perfect: Instagram use in a Kuwaiti cultural context
<p>This study surveys 539 Arab university students to examine gender motivational differences in Instagram use, exploring the Self-Perfectionist Personality concept and usage activities that best predict a <i>Self-Presentation</i> motive on Instagram. While both genders utilized Instagram mainly for <i>Entertainment</i>, they varied on the priority of other motives. Females were less likely to have public accounts, post personal pictures, and disclose personal information. Also, self-perfectionists of both genders excessively edited their personal pictures before posting them and were more likely to use Instagram for <i>Self-Presentation</i>. Outcomes are discussed in the light of the influences of culture and gender roles in Kuwait.</p
An Arab perspective on social media : how banks in Kuwait use instagram for public relations
This study examines the public relations functions of eight Kuwaiti banks listed in the Kuwait Stock Exchange Market (KSEM) that post on their Instagram accounts. It also uses market-size, organization, and individual level predictors to model Instagram postings. A content analysis of 1502 posts revealed the banks use Instagram for promotion, information dissemination, community building, and interactive engagement, in that order of prominence. The findings suggest banks operate at the confluence of visual communication through Instagram and integration of religious sym- bolism to serve a public relations function predicated on image and influence. In doing so, the banks tap into the wellspring of social media use by target publics by navigating a balance between obedience to Allah and meeting bank business objectives. The resulting tension between sacred and secular highlights Arab cultural values and suggests Instagram fosters individualism, which challenges Arab emphasis on collectivism and fractures the notion online platforms can effectively build meaningful relationships that characterize Arab culture. The study posits Instagram is more effective in an Arab context at image building than relationship building, threading the importance of visual communication through social media across Arab culture and global public relations practices
