Life Beyond Bars: Nine Prisoners and Their Families, and Faith-Based Efforts to Recognize and Avoid-Cross-Generational Criminal Habits.

    Get PDF
The aim of this study is to examine prisoners’ firsthand experiences and their underlying family issues to bring awareness and delete current cross-generational criminal habits. Through analyzing a series of individual experiences and exploring underlying family issues, the study intends to bring awareness and exposure to the implications of the criminal justice system on prisoners and their families. This study will analyze personal stories of prisoners and their families to identify, interact, and intervene in best practices to avoid criminal habits. The research gathered aims to empower prisoners and their families in suggested ways to delete repeated criminal patterns and focus on reintegration, restoration, and redemption. This research is intended to direct both prisoners and families toward positive outcomes of hope, faith, and healing. Acknowledging, addressing, and analyzing these stories allows prisoners to motivate their families to avoid criminal behavior and create new generational abundance. The call of Jesus is twofold as an ethical calling to society to hear and embrace the stories of prisoners while encouraging prisoners to embrace a future of being heard and transformed

This Article explores the theme of troubling settled waters, which represents the impact of African-American reparations on the current landscape of race relations in America. The Article outlines the current and historical debate over reparations, addressing the arguments of opponents who contend that reparations dialogue and action wastes intellectual and monetary resources, unnecessarily resurrects painful memories, and creates racial division. It also takes note of contemporary reparations efforts in the courts. as well as the theories and bases for this litigation. The Article concludes that, given the continuing pervasiveness of race and race issues in modern America, reparations are a welcome and important opportunity for achieving civil rights goals

Determination of some toxic gaseous emissions at Ama Industrial Complex, Enugu, south eastern Nigeria

    Get PDF
A study of some gases emitted from three industries at Ama industrial complex, Nigeria, was carried out using Crowcon Gasman, single gas monitors. Results showed that HCN (0.94 ± 0.16 ppm) and CO (3.17 ± 0.89 ppm) emissions from Brewery were significantly (P < 0.05) higher than those of Bottling Company A (0.46 ± 0.12 and 0.65 ± 0.10 ppm, respectively). NH3, SO2 and NO2 emissions were the same. Cl2 emissions from Bottling Company A and Bottling Company B were the same, but each was significantly (P < 0.05) higher than that of Brewery. H2S emission from Bottling Company A (21.24 ± 0.97 ppm) was significantly (P < 0. 05) higher than that from Brewery (17.71 ± 0.94 ppm), which was significantly higher than that of Bottling Company B (12.57 ± 0.32 ppm). Apart from CO and NH3, the concentrations of other gaseous emissions exceeded the Nigerian and United States national ambient air quality standards. Therefore, it is recommended that these companies should determine appropriate control measures to reduce these toxic emissions.Key words: Toxic gaseous emissions, type, concentrations, Ama Industrial Complex, Nigeria

A Nonparametric Method for Ascertaining Change Points in Regression Regimes

    Get PDF
Of interest is the specific model called the joinpoint two regime regression or broken line model composed of one regression line and a horizontal ray. This is a very restricted but highly useful subset of the well-researched change point problem. The usual approach to a more general model was first presented by Quandt (1958) who found the maximum likelihood estimates of the slope, intercept and joinpoint by assuming that the error terms are generated under the usual assumptions, that is, from a normal distribution with constant variance and are uncorrelated. We develop a method that does not rely on this assumption, demonstrate its use on an example of proximity indexes of whale cow and calf pairs, and compare the new method to the Quandt estimates in a simulation study showing this new method performs adequately

Black, White, Brown, Green, and Fordice: The Flavor of Higher Education in Louisiana and Mississippi

Black, White, Brown, Green, and Fordice: The Flavor of Higher Education in Louisiana and Mississippi chronicles the higher education desegregation sagas in Louisiana and Mississippi. The Article specifically compares the histories of the higher education desegregation lawsuits in the two states and their subsequent experiences and progress under Settlement Agreements. The statistical populations of many universities in both states are still largely identifiable as “white” or “black,” and so the Article will pose questions not only respecting the implementation of United States v. Fordice in both states, but also respecting the value, desirability, or possibility of the “integrative ideal” converting “black schools” and “white schools” to “just schools.
