    A technique is described for characterizing the coherent noise found in LANDSAT-4 and LANDSAT-5 MSS data and a companion technique for filtering out the coherent noise. The techniques are demonstrated on LANDSAT-4 and LANDSAT-5 MSS data sets, and explanations of the noise pattern are suggested in Appendix C. A cookbook procedure for characterizing and filtering the coherent noise using special NASA/Goddard IDIMS functions is included. Also presented are analysis results from the retrofitted LANDSAT-5 MSS sensor, which shows that the coherent noise has been substantially reduced

    Illuminating Dense Quark Matter

    We imagine shining light on a lump of cold dense quark matter, in the CFL phase and therefore a transparent insulator. We calculate the angles of reflection and refraction, and the intensity of the reflected and refracted light. Although the only potentially observable context for this phenomenon (reflection of light from and refraction of light through an illuminated quark star) is unlikely to be realized, our calculation casts new light on the old idea that confinement makes the QCD vacuum behave as if filled with a condensate of color-magnetic monopoles.Comment: 4 pages, 1 figur

    Colour superconductivity in finite systems

    In this paper we study the effect of finite size on the two-flavour colour superconducting state. As well as restricting the quarks to a box, we project onto states of good baryon number and onto colour singlets, these being necessary restrictions on any observable ``quark nuggets''. We find that whereas finite size alone has a significant effect for very small boxes, with the superconducting state often being destroyed, the effect of projection is to restore it again. The infinite-volume limit is a good approximation even for quite small systems.Comment: 14 pages RevTeX4, 12 eps figure

    Illuminating interfaces between phases of a U(1) x U(1) gauge theory

    We study reflection and transmission of light at the interface between different phases of a U(1) x U(1) gauge theory. On each side of the interface, one can choose a basis so that one generator is free (allowing propagation of light), and the orthogonal one may be free, Higgsed, or confined. However, the basis on one side will in general be rotated relative to the basis on the other by some angle alpha. We calculate reflection and transmission coefficients for both polarizations of light and all 8 types of boundary, for arbitrary alpha. We find that an observer measuring the behavior of light beams at the boundary would be able to distinguish 4 different types of boundary, and we show how the remaining ambiguity arises from the principle of complementarity (indistinguishability of confined and Higgs phases) which leaves observables invariant under a global electric/magnetic duality transformation. We also explain the seemingly paradoxical behavior of Higgs/Higgs and confined/confined boundaries, and clarify some previous arguments that confinement must involve magnetic monopole condensation.Comment: RevTeX, 12 page

    Constraining crystalline color superconducting quark matter with gravitational-wave data

    We estimate the maximum equatorial ellipticity sustainable by compact stars composed of crystalline color-superconducting quark matter. For the theoretically allowed range of the gap parameter Δ\Delta, the maximum ellipticity could be as large as 10−210^{-2}, which is about 4 orders of magnitude larger than the tightest upper limit obtained by the recent science runs of the LIGO and GEO600 gravitational wave detectors based on the data from 78 radio pulsars. We point out that the current gravitational-wave strain upper limit already has some implications for the gap parameter. In particular, the upper limit for the Crab pulsar implies that Δ\Delta is less than O(20) MeV for a range of quark chemical potential accessible in compact stars, assuming that the pulsar has a mass 1.4M⊙1.4 M_{\odot}, radius 10 km, breaking strain 10−310^{-3}, and that it has the maximum quadrupole deformation it can sustain without fracturing.Comment: Minor changes to match the published versio

    Institutions and New Business Startups in the Former Socialist States

    This paper examines the impact of institutional quality on the level of new business formation in 26 of the former socialist states from 2006-2018. Using cross-sectional and panel data, I find that the quality of a nation’s institutions, as measured by the rule of law and control of corruption, has a statistically and economically significant effect on the number of newly registered LLCs. Economies willing to improve their institutional quality can expect more businesses start-ups to register in the formal economy. Specifically, improving the control of corruption by one standard deviation is associated with between 1.5 and 2.4 new businesses registered per 1,000 working age people. Furthermore, I propose that institutional quality also influences an individual’s decision whether to operate a new business start-up in the informal or formal sector
