Objective. We present a rare pathology with uncommon onset. Background. Mucinous cystic pancreatic neoplasms (MCNs) are rare tumors, which generally occur in the fifth and sixth decades of women. Although some tumours are frankly malignant, all are in fact considered to be potentially malignant. Case report. We present the case of a 30-year-old patient, with a 16/11 cm tumor located in the pancreas body, which was diagnosed 8 months after birth. The preoperative assessment of the pancreatic lesion suggested the diagnosis of mucosal cyst neoplasm, without being able to determine its benign or malignant nature. Central pancreatectomy was performed with a good postoperative evolution. Histopathologic result was represented by mucinous pancreatic chistadenoma. Two years after surgical intervention, the patient presented no signs of recurrence or pancreatic (exocrine or endocrine) secretion deficiency. Conclusions. Preoperative imaging evaluation could be suggestive for mucinous cystic tumour, but this cannot specify however the nature of the tumor. The postpartum occurrence could establish a possible relationship between hormonal levels encountered during pregnancy and the development of this tumor, taking into considerations the ovarian-type stroma and the presence of hormone (estrogen and progesterone) receptors in this neoplasm. Central pancreatectomy without anastomosis preserves the functions of pancreas, and also decreases morbidity

This paper presents the dissimilar laser welding of AISI 321 stainless steel and AISI 1010 carbon steel thin sheets in butt joint geometry using a 1 kW diode laser. Influence of the welding speed on the geometry and microstructure of the joints is discussed. Structural characterisation of the welds is realised through optical, electron microscopy and EDS analysis, observing distinct mixed and unmixed areas in the weld bead because of the high cooling rate. The weld bead presents an austenitic-martensitic-ferrite structure, characterized by austenitic twin grains with ferrite particles precipitated on grain boundaries, and islands comprising a ferrite-martensite structure. Chromium and nickel migration in the weld bead area was observed. Good tensile behaviour of the dissimilar joints was obtained, as all the specimen failure occurs far-off the weld zone

In this study we are trying to establish a correlation between the surgical technique used for the treatment of chronic subdural hematomas and the risk of recurrence. Between 01.06.2008 and 31.05.2014, 123 patients with 138 chronic subdural hematomas (CSDH) were operated on and followed-up in our department. Among them, 16 hematomas (11,6%) recurred. Factors related to the patients (gender, age, location of the hematoma) are analyzed as possible predictors of recurrence. Several surgical techniques were used in the treatment of chronic subdural hematomas. Each of them is analyzed to find possibly connections with the recurrence risk of the size of the approach, the reposition of the bone flap, the suture of the dura and other aspects. There are obvious, statistically significant correlations between the risk of recurrence and some elements of the surgical technique employed

The present article proposes an analysis of how the European Education Area is approached within existing articles in the Web of Science database. Considering that the education system at the European level and at Romania’s national level is continuously reformed, if teachers or researchers want to carry out research or implement projects regarding the state of the educational system, in addition to the official information that can be found, they also need specific information contained in the scientific research within the articles, which contain, in their body, the presentation of the phenomena, the description of the literature specific to the discussed issue, a research methodology and tool, specific results, and conclusions filtered through the experience and training of the authors of the articles. The research methodology consisted of the development of a bibliometric analysis in the field of European education, being carried out based on articles from the Web of Science platform. The query displayed 404 scientific articles containing "European educational space" in the document's title, abstract, or keywords. The results show that most articles address the field of higher education, and most authors are affiliated with higher education structures and even European consortia made by universities at the European level. Information on the chosen topic can also be gathered from within the consortia of the universities where the authors of the article are affiliated. The analysis of the clusters of the 404 analyzed articles with the VosViewer program showed that the articles can be grouped according to five of the six strategies adopted by the European Council for the creation of the European Education Area

Tantalum oxynitride thin films: Assessment of the photocatalytic efficiency and antimicrobial capacity

    Get PDF
Tantalum oxynitride thin films have been deposited by reactive magnetron sputtering, using a fixed proportion reactive gas mixture (85% N2 + 15% O2). To produce the films, the partial pressure of the mixture in the working atmosphere was varied. The characteristics of the produced films were analyzed from three main perspectives and correspondent correlations: the study of the bonding states in the films, the efficiency of photo-degradation, and the antibacterial/antibiofilm capacity of the coatings against Salmonella. X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy results suggest that nitride and oxynitride features agree with a constant behavior relative to the tantalum chemistry. The coatings deposited with a higher reactive gas mixture partial pressure exhibit a significantly better antibiofilm capacity. Favorable antibacterial resistance was correlated with the presence of dominant oxynitride contributions. The photocatalytic ability of the deposited films was assessed by measuring the level of degradation of an aqueous solution containing methyl orange, with or without the addition of H2O2, under UV or VIS irradiation. Degradation efficiencies as high as 82% have been obtained, suggesting that tantalum oxynitride films, obtained in certain configurations, are promising materials for the photodegradation of organic pollutants (dyes). This research was supported by FEDER through the COMPETE Program and by the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT) in the framework of the Strategic Project PEST-C/FIS/UI607/2011. Objective. This study compared the eradication rates of of Helicobacter pylori (HP) infection by a 7-day and 14-day anti-HP regimen. Materials and Methods. An open, randomized, prospective study was performed to evaluate the response to anti-HP treatment in adult HP-positive patients following a 7-day course (Regimen A) of a proton pump inhibitor in association with clarithromycin and amoxicillin compared to a 14-day course (Regimen B). Gastric biopsies were performed at baseline and two months after anti-HP treatment. Results. Seventy-eight patients aged 18–64 years (28 males, 50 females) diagnosed with HP infection were included. Fifty-two (66.7%) patients received Regimen B and 26 (33.3%) Regimen A. The overall eradication rate was 70.5%. Better treatment response (p<0.01) was seen in Regimen B (44/52, 84.2% versus 11/26, 42.3%). Significant improvement in histological features was seen in regimen B. There has been significant overall reduction in endoscopic aspects of gastric and duodenal lesions in both regimens. Younger patients ≤35 years had a better response to Regimen B. Better treatment response was seen in women, urban residents, and those with tertiary level of education in both groups. Conclusion. 14-day anti-HP regimen offered a significant better overall eradication of HP in study population

Evaluation of carbohydrate and lipid metabolism dynamics in chronic HCV diabetic patients treated with direct antiviral agents

Although Hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection has become a curable disease, the aftermath of the infection remains an important aspect to be evaluated. HCV infection is well known for its extrahepatic manifestations, mostly the tight relationship between HCV, type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and dyslipidemia. Not only HCV increases the risk of T2DM, but it also affects its control in diabetic patients, increasing the risk of diabetes related complications. Furthermore, HCV hijacks the lipid metabolism resulting in abnormalities in circulating lipids which can lead to multiple complications, such as increased atherosclerotic risk and hepatic steatosis. Objectives. The aim of this study was to evaluate the dynamics of the parameters of carbohydrate and lipid metabolism in HCV-infected diabetic patients compared to non-diabetic patients after viral eradication. Material and methods. This is a prospective study conducted on 100 patients with chronic HVC infection who obtained viral clearance after interferon-free treatment. 58 patients had type 2 diabetes mellitus and 42 were nondiabetic. We evaluated serum total cholesterol, triglycerides, blood glucose and glycosylated hemoglobin in both groups at treatment initiation and 1 year after. Continuous variables were expressed as mean values ± standard deviation or median, categorical variables were represented as relative or absolute frequencies. Characteristics were compared using the Mann-Whitney method or the two-sample Student's T-test method for continuous variables, Chi-square and Fischer's test for categorical variables. A p value < 0.05 was considered statistically significant. Outcomes. The study analyzed and compared lipid and glycemic profiles of diabetic and non-diabetic HVC patients before and after viral cure. Conclusions. 1 year after treatment initiation the changes in lipid metabolism seem to persist, carbohydrate metabolism seems to remain unchanged, with no differences between diabetic and non-diabetic patients

    No full text
Wood Polymer Composites (WPCs) based on polypropylene (PP) have gained increasing interest over the past two decades, both in the scientific community and in industry. Meanwhile, a large number of publications is available, but yet the actual market penetration of such materials is rather limited. This paper aims to study an alternative method for compatibilization of wood with polypropylene, by using an innovative class of environmental-friendly additives, namely ionic liquids. To emphasize the performance characteristics of the various obtained composite materials bearing different wood to polymer ratios, water absorption, tensile mechanical tests, surface energy tests have been performed, indicating a good compatibility between the ionic liquid-additivated wood and the thermoplastic polymer

Comparative Analysis between Daily Extreme Temperature and Precipitation Values Derived from Observations and Gridded Datasets in North-Western Romania

    No full text
Climate gridded datasets are highly needed and useful in conducting data analysis for research and practical purposes. They provide long-term information on various climatic variables for large areas worldwide, making them suitable for use at any spatial level. It is essential to assess the accuracy of gridded data by comparing the data to measured values, especially when they are used as input parameters for hydro-climatic models. From the multitude of databases available for North-western Romania, we selected three, particularly the European Climate Assessment and Dataset (E-OBS), the Romanian Climatic Dataset (ROCADA), and the Climate of the Carpathian Region (CARPATCLIM). In this paper, we analyse the extreme precipitation and temperature data derived from the above-mentioned datasets over a common 50-year period (1961–2010) and compare the data with raw values to estimate the degree of uncertainty for each set of data. The observation data, recorded at two meteorological stations located in a complex topography region, were compared to the output of the gridded datasets, by using descriptive statistics for the mean and extreme annual and seasonal temperature and precipitation data, and trend analyses. The main findings are: the high suitability of the ROCADA gridded database for climate trend analysis and of the E-OBS gridded database for extreme temperature and precipitation analysis
