Leaf closures of Riemannian foliations: a survey on topological and geometric aspects of Killing foliations

A smooth foliation is Riemannian when its leaves are locally equidistant. The closures of the leaves of a Riemannian foliation on a simply connected manifold, or more generally of a Killing foliation, are described by flows of transverse Killing vector fields. This offers significant technical advantages in the study of this class of foliations, which nonetheless includes other important classes, such as those given by the orbits of isometric Lie group actions. Aiming at a broad audience, in this survey we introduce Killing foliations from the very basics, starting with a brief revision of the main objects appearing in this theory, such as pseudogroups, sheaves, holonomy and basic cohomology. We then review Molino's structural theory for Riemannian foliations and present its transverse counterpart in the theory of complete pseudogroups of isometries, emphasizing the connections between these topics. We also survey some classical results and recent developments in the theory of Killing foliations. Finally, we review some topics in the theory of singular Riemannian foliations and discuss singular Killing foliations, also proposing a new approach to them via holonomy metric pseudogroups and the theory of blow-ups, which possibly opens up a new area of interest.Comment: 45 pages, 9 figures.

Physical factors affecting plasmid DNA compaction in stearylamine-containing nanoemulsions intended for gene delivery

Cationic lipids have been used in the development of non-viral gene delivery systems as lipoplexes. Stearylamine, a cationic lipid that presents a primary amine group when in solution, is able to compact genetic material by electrostatic interactions. In dispersed systems such as nanoemulsions this lipid anchors on the oil/water interface confering a positive charge to them. The aim of this work was to evaluate factors that influence DNA compaction in cationic nanoemulsions containing stearylamine. The influence of the stearylamine incorporation phase (water or oil), time of complexation, and different incubation temperatures were studied. The complexation rate was assessed by electrophoresis migration on agarose gel 0.7%, and nanoemulsion and lipoplex characterization was done by Dynamic Light Scattering (DLS). The results demonstrate that the best DNA compaction process occurs after 120 min of complexation, at low temperature (4 ± 1 °C), and after incorporation of the cationic lipid into the aqueous phase. Although the zeta potential of lipoplexes was lower than the results found for basic nanoemulsions, the granulometry did not change. Moreover, it was demonstrated that lipoplexes are suitable vehicles for gene delivery. © 2012 by the authors; licensee MDPI, Basel, Switzerland

This experiment was carried out in a greenhouse during the spring to study combinations of nitrogen and sulphur rates on Brachiaria brizantha cv. Marandu growing in nutrient solution and using ground quartz as substrate. It was set in a fractionated 5² factorial arrangement, with five rates of nitrogen and five rates of sulphur. The resulting 13 combinations were, in mg L-1: 14 and 3.2, 14 and 32, 14 and 80, 126 and 12.8, 126 and 64, 210 and 3.2, 210 and 32, 210 and 80, 336 and 12.8, 336 and 64, 462 and 3.2, 462 and 32, and 462 and 80. The experimental units were set in randomized blocks design, with four replications. Plants had two growth periods. The results showed that high availability of sulphur is required when nitrogen is supplied for total tiller number, leaf number, leaf dry matter yield, stems plus sheaths and plant tops, leaf area and leaf appearance rate. In order to maximize these variables for the marandugrass, it is necessary the minimum combination of 358 mg L-1 of nitrogen with 56 mg L-1 of sulphur. The highest leaf appearance rate for marandugrass occurred in the sulphur rate of 42 mg L-1

The objective of this work was to evaluate the effects of combined rates of N and S on signalgrass (Brachiaria decumbens) productive characteristics. This grass was collected in cylinders with soil + plants in a degrading pasture established in an Entisol. The experiment was carried out in a greenhouse, at Piracicaba, SP, Brazil, from November 2003 to March 2004. Five rates of N (0, 100, 200, 300 and 400 mg/dm³) were combined with five rates of S (0, 10, 20, 30, and 40 mg/dm³) in a fractionated 5² factorial, based on a central composite design. Plants were harvested following three periods of 30 days growth. The combination between N and S rates affected the number of tillers, dry matter yield of leaf blade and stems plus sheaths at the first harvest and the leaf blade: stems plus sheaths ratio at the second harvest. Nitrogen rates had effects on the number of tillers and on dry matter yield of leaf blade and stems plus sheaths at the second and third harvests. At the first growth, the leaf number of the grass was changed by both N and S rates, and by N rates at the second and third growths. Maximum dry matter yields were reached when N and S rates were applied at about 10:1 ratio. The application of mainly N, but also of S, affected the productive characteristics of signalgrass, and its recovery

NEOTROPICAL ALIEN MAMMALS: a data set of occurrence and abundance of alien mammals in the Neotropics

Biological invasion is one of the main threats to native biodiversity. For a species to become invasive, it must be voluntarily or involuntarily introduced by humans into a nonnative habitat. Mammals were among first taxa to be introduced worldwide for game, meat, and labor, yet the number of species introduced in the Neotropics remains unknown. In this data set, we make available occurrence and abundance data on mammal species that (1) transposed a geographical barrier and (2) were voluntarily or involuntarily introduced by humans into the Neotropics. Our data set is composed of 73,738 historical and current georeferenced records on alien mammal species of which around 96% correspond to occurrence data on 77 species belonging to eight orders and 26 families. Data cover 26 continental countries in the Neotropics, ranging from Mexico and its frontier regions (southern Florida and coastal-central Florida in the southeast United States) to Argentina, Paraguay, Chile, and Uruguay, and the 13 countries of Caribbean islands. Our data set also includes neotropical species (e.g., Callithrix sp., Myocastor coypus, Nasua nasua) considered alien in particular areas of Neotropics. The most numerous species in terms of records are from Bos sp. (n = 37,782), Sus scrofa (n = 6,730), and Canis familiaris (n = 10,084); 17 species were represented by only one record (e.g., Syncerus caffer, Cervus timorensis, Cervus unicolor, Canis latrans). Primates have the highest number of species in the data set (n = 20 species), partly because of uncertainties regarding taxonomic identification of the genera Callithrix, which includes the species Callithrix aurita, Callithrix flaviceps, Callithrix geoffroyi, Callithrix jacchus, Callithrix kuhlii, Callithrix penicillata, and their hybrids. This unique data set will be a valuable source of information on invasion risk assessments, biodiversity redistribution and conservation-related research. There are no copyright restrictions. NEOTROPICAL CARNIVORES: a data set on carnivore distribution in the Neotropics

    No full text
Mammalian carnivores are considered a key group in maintaining ecological health and can indicate potential ecological integrity in landscapes where they occur. Carnivores also hold high conservation value and their habitat requirements can guide management and conservation plans. The order Carnivora has 84 species from 8 families in the Neotropical region: Canidae; Felidae; Mephitidae; Mustelidae; Otariidae; Phocidae; Procyonidae; and Ursidae. Herein, we include published and unpublished data on native terrestrial Neotropical carnivores (Canidae; Felidae; Mephitidae; Mustelidae; Procyonidae; and Ursidae). NEOTROPICAL CARNIVORES is a publicly available data set that includes 99,605 data entries from 35,511 unique georeferenced coordinates. Detection/non-detection and quantitative data were obtained from 1818 to 2018 by researchers, governmental agencies, non-governmental organizations, and private consultants. Data were collected using several methods including camera trapping, museum collections, roadkill, line transect, and opportunistic records. Literature (peer-reviewed and grey literature) from Portuguese, Spanish and English were incorporated in this compilation. Most of the data set consists of detection data entries (n = 79,343; 79.7%) but also includes non-detection data (n = 20,262; 20.3%). Of those, 43.3% also include count data (n = 43,151). The information available in NEOTROPICAL CARNIVORES will contribute to macroecological, ecological, and conservation questions in multiple spatio-temporal perspectives. As carnivores play key roles in trophic interactions, a better understanding of their distribution and habitat requirements are essential to establish conservation management plans and safeguard the future ecological health of Neotropical ecosystems. Our data paper, combined with other large-scale data sets, has great potential to clarify species distribution and related ecological processes within the Neotropics.
