Electronic Properties of Functionalized Diamanes for Field-Emission Displays

Ultrathin diamond films, or diamanes, are promising quasi-2D materials that are characterized by high stiffness, extreme wear resistance, high thermal conductivity, and chemical stability. Surface functionalization of multilayer graphene with different stackings of layers could be an interesting opportunity to induce proper electronic properties into diamanes. Combination of these electronic properties together with extraordinary mechanical ones will lead to their applications as field-emission displays substituting original devices with light-emitting diodes or organic light-emitting diodes. In the present study, we focus on the electronic properties of fluorinated and hydrogenated diamanes with (111), (110), (0001), (101̅0), and (2̅110) crystallographic orientations of surfaces of various thicknesses by using first-principles calculations and Bader analysis of electron density. We see that fluorine induces an occupied surface electronic state, while hydrogen modifies the occupied bulk state and also induces unoccupied surface states. Furthermore, a lower number of layers is necessary for hydrogenated diamanes to achieve the convergence of the work function in comparison with fluorinated diamanes, with the exception of fluorinated (110) and (2̅110) films that achieve rapid convergence and have the same behavior as other hydrogenated surfaces. This induces a modification of the work function with an increase of the number of layers that makes hydrogenated (2̅110) diamanes the most suitable surface for field-emission displays, better than the fluorinated counterparts. In addition, a quasi-quantitative descriptor of surface dipole moment based on the Tantardini−Oganov electronegativity scale is introduced as the average of bond dipole moments between the surface atoms. This new fundamental descriptor is capable of predicting a priori the bond dipole moment and may be considered as a new useful feature for crystal structure prediction based on artificial intelligence

Optoelectronic properties of a photosystem I - carbon nanotube hybrid system

The photoconductance properties of photosystem I (PSI) covalently bound to carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are measured. We demonstrate that the PSI forms active electronic junctions with the CNTs enabling control of the CNTs photoconductance by the PSI. In order to electrically contact the photoactive proteins, a cysteine mutant is generated at one end of the PSI by genetic engineering. The CNTs are covalently bound to this reactive group using carbodiimide chemistry. We detect an enhanced photoconductance signal of the hybrid material at photon wavelengths resonant to the absorption maxima of the PSI compared to nonresonant wavelengths. The measurements prove that it is feasible to integrate photosynthetic proteins into optoelectronic circuits at the nanoscale

The influence of size effect on the electronic and elastic properties of diamond films with nanometer thickness

The atomic structure and physical properties of few-layered oriented diamond nanocrystals (diamanes), covered by hydrogen atoms from both sides are studied using electronic band structure calculations. It was shown that energy stability linear increases upon increasing of the thickness of proposed structures. All 2D carbon films display direct dielectric band gaps with nonlinear quantum confinement response upon the thickness. Elastic properties of diamanes reveal complex dependence upon increasing of the number of layers. Selinexor in Advanced, Metastatic Dedifferentiated Liposarcoma: A Multinational, Randomized, Double-Blind, Placebo-Controlled Trial

PURPOSE Antitumor activity in preclinical models and a phase I study of patients with dedifferentiated liposarcoma (DD-LPS) was observed with selinexor. We evaluated the clinical benefit of selinexor in patients with previously treated DD-LPS whose sarcoma progressed on approved agents. METHODS SEAL was a phase II-III, multicenter, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study. Patients age 12 years or older with advanced DD-LPS who had received two-five lines of therapy were randomly assigned (2:1) to selinexor (60 mg) or placebo twice weekly in 6-week cycles (crossover permitted). The primary end point was progression-free survival (PFS). Patients who received at least one dose of study treatment were included for safety analysis (ClinicalTrials.gov identifier: ). RESULTS Two hundred eighty-five patients were enrolled (selinexor, n = 188; placebo, n = 97). PFS was significantly longer with selinexor versus placebo: hazard ratio (HR) 0.70 (95% CI, 0.52 to 0.95; one-sided P = .011; medians 2.8 v 2.1 months), as was time to next treatment: HR 0.50 (95% CI, 0.37 to 0.66; one-sided P < .0001; medians 5.8 v 3.2 months). With crossover, no difference was observed in overall survival. The most common treatment-emergent adverse events of any grade versus grade 3 or 4 with selinexor were nausea (151 [80.7%] v 11 [5.9]), decreased appetite (113 [60.4%] v 14 [7.5%]), and fatigue (96 [51.3%] v 12 [6.4%]). Four (2.1%) and three (3.1%) patients died in the selinexor and placebo arms, respectively. Exploratory RNA sequencing analysis identified that the absence of CALB1 expression was associated with longer PFS with selinexor compared with placebo (median 6.9 v 2.2 months; HR, 0.19; P = .001). CONCLUSION Patients with advanced, refractory DD-LPS showed improved PFS and time to next treatment with selinexor compared with placebo. Supportive care and dose reductions mitigated side effects of selinexor. Prospective validation of CALB1 expression as a predictive biomarker for selinexor in DD-LPS is warranted. How would Denmark react to a wave of mass immigration from Germany, numbering hundreds of thousands or millions of people? The question is, needles to say, purely hypothetical, but it is nevertheless, in my view, highly pertinent in the context of discussing the issues raised in Liav Orgad’s important book, The Cultural Defense of Nations. These questions are at the very heart of Europe’s present concerns and dilemmas, which makes the book’s highly original, learned and well-argued contribution to the debate all the more valuable.</p

Книга представляет собой исследование римских выборов и предвыборной агитации в период поздней Республики, посвящённое различным способам завоевания электоральной поддержки и обеспечения победы при голосовании. Речь в ней идёт не только о соискании в узком смысле этого слова, но и о каждом виде поведения со стороны кандидата — действительном или предполагаемом — которые, как предполагалось, увеличивали его шансы на прохождение cursus honorum. Вопрос о римских выборах помещается, таким образом, в более широкий политический и социальный контекст. Одной из целей данной работы является переоценка традиционной модели римской избирательной системы.
