    Continuous Three-Dimensional Control of a Virtual Helicopter Using a Motor Imagery Based Brain-Computer Interface

    Brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) allow a user to interact with a computer system using thought. However, only recently have devices capable of providing sophisticated multi-dimensional control been achieved non-invasively. A major goal for non-invasive BCI systems has been to provide continuous, intuitive, and accurate control, while retaining a high level of user autonomy. By employing electroencephalography (EEG) to record and decode sensorimotor rhythms (SMRs) induced from motor imaginations, a consistent, user-specific control signal may be characterized. Utilizing a novel method of interactive and continuous control, we trained three normal subjects to modulate their SMRs to achieve three-dimensional movement of a virtual helicopter that is fast, accurate, and continuous. In this system, the virtual helicopter's forward-backward translation and elevation controls were actuated through the modulation of sensorimotor rhythms that were converted to forces applied to the virtual helicopter at every simulation time step, and the helicopter's angle of left or right rotation was linearly mapped, with higher resolution, from sensorimotor rhythms associated with other motor imaginations. These different resolutions of control allow for interplay between general intent actuation and fine control as is seen in the gross and fine movements of the arm and hand. Subjects controlled the helicopter with the goal of flying through rings (targets) randomly positioned and oriented in a three-dimensional space. The subjects flew through rings continuously, acquiring as many as 11 consecutive rings within a five-minute period. In total, the study group successfully acquired over 85% of presented targets. These results affirm the effective, three-dimensional control of our motor imagery based BCI system, and suggest its potential applications in biological navigation, neuroprosthetics, and other applications

    Carrier density and delocalization signatures in doped carbon nanotubes from quantitative magnetic resonance

    Abstract: High-performance semiconductor materials and devices are needed to supply the growing energy and computing demand. Organic semiconductors (OSCs) are attractive options for opto-electronic devices, due to their low cost, extensive tunability, easy fabrication, and flexibility. Semiconducting single-walled carbon nanotubes (s-SWCNTs) have been extensively studied due to their high carrier mobility, stability and opto-electronic tunability. Although molecular charge transfer doping affords widely tunable carrier density and conductivity in s-SWCNTs (and OSCs in general), a pervasive challenge for such systems is reliable measurement of charge carrier density and mobility. In this work we demonstrate a direct quantification of charge carrier density, and by extension carrier mobility, in chemically doped s-SWCNTs by a nuclear magnetic resonance approach. The experimental results are verified by a phase-space filling doping model, and we suggest this approach should be broadly applicable for OSCs. Our results show that hole mobility in doped s-SWCNT networks increases with increasing charge carrier density, a finding that is contrary to that expected for mobility limited by ionized impurity scattering. We discuss the implications of this important finding for additional tunability and applicability of s-SWCNT and OSC devices

    Movement mechanics as a determinate of muscle structure, recruitment and coordination

    During muscle contractions, the muscle fascicles may shorten at a rate different from the muscle-tendon unit, and the ratio of these velocities is its gearing. Appropriate gearing allows fascicles to reduce their shortening velocities and allows them to operate at effective shortening velocities across a range of movements. Gearing of the muscle fascicles within the muscle belly is the result of rotations of the fascicles and bulging of the belly. Variable gearing can also occur as a result of tendon length changes that can be caused by changes in the relative timing of muscle activity for different mechanical tasks. Recruitment patterns of slow and fast fibres are crucial for achieving optimal muscle performance, and coordination between muscles is related to whole limb performance. Poor coordination leads to inefficiencies and loss of power, and optimal coordination is required for high power outputs and high mechanical efficiencies from the limb. This paper summarizes key studies in these areas of neuromuscular mechanics and results from studies where we have tested these phenomena on a cycle ergometer are presented to highlight novel insights. The studies show how muscle structure and neural activation interact to generate smooth and effective motion of the body

    Ultrafast Au(III)-Mediated Arylation of Cysteine

    Through mechanistic work and rational design, we have developed the fastest organometallic abiotic Cys bioconjugation. As a result, the developed organometallic Au(III) bioconjugation reagents enable selective labeling of Cys moieties down to picomolar concentrations and allow for the rapid construction of complex heterostructures from peptides, proteins, and oligonucleotides. This work showcases how organometallic chemistry can be interfaced with biomolecules and lead to a range of reactivities that are largely unmatched by classical organic chemistry tools
