Stability and Invariant Random Subgroups

Consider $\operatorname{Sym}(n)$, endowed with the normalized Hamming metric $d_n$. A finitely-generated group $\Gamma$ is \emph{P-stable} if every almost homomorphism $\rho_{n_k}\colon \Gamma\rightarrow\operatorname{Sym}(n_k)$ (i.e., for every $g,h\in\Gamma$, $\lim_{k\rightarrow\infty}d_{n_k}( \rho_{n_k}(gh),\rho_{n_k}(g)\rho_{n_k}(h))=0$) is close to an actual homomorphism $\varphi_{n_k} \colon\Gamma\rightarrow\operatorname{Sym}(n_k)$. Glebsky and Rivera observed that finite groups are P-stable, while Arzhantseva and P\u{a}unescu showed the same for abelian groups and raised many questions, especially about P-stability of amenable groups. We develop P-stability in general, and in particular for amenable groups. Our main tool is the theory of invariant random subgroups (IRS), which enables us to give a characterization of P-stability among amenable groups, and to deduce stability and instability of various families of amenable groups.Comment: 24 pages; v2 includes minor updates and new reference

Cheeger-Simons differential characters with compact support and Pontryagin duality

By adapting the Cheeger-Simons approach to differential cohomology, we establish a notion of differential cohomology with compact support. We show that it is functorial with respect to open embeddings and that it fits into a natural diagram of exact sequences which compare it to compactly supported singular cohomology and differential forms with compact support, in full analogy to ordinary differential cohomology. We prove an excision theorem for differential cohomology using a suitable relative version. Furthermore, we use our model to give an independent proof of Pontryagin duality for differential cohomology recovering a result of [Harvey, Lawson, Zweck - Amer. J. Math. 125 (2003) 791]: On any oriented manifold, ordinary differential cohomology is isomorphic to the smooth Pontryagin dual of compactly supported differential cohomology. Intra- und extrazelluläre Mechanismen bei der Pathogenese von Chondrodysplasien

Die Pseudoachondroplasie (PSACH) und die Multiple Epiphysäre Dysplasie (MED) sind zwei konstitutionelle Skeletterkrankungen, die zu disproportioniertem Minderwuchs führen, wobei MED mildere Symptome aufweist als PSACH. Beide Formen werden u.a. durch Mutationen im Gen für das cartilage oligomeric matrix protein (COMP) hervorgerufen, die häufig zur Rentention des Proteins im endoplasmatischen Retikulum (ER) führen. Die physiologische Funktion von COMP und dessen Rolle bei der Pathogenese ist jedoch weitgehend unbekannt. In der vorliegenden Arbeit wurden die Auswirkungen mehrerer Mutationen (D361Y, D469, D475N, H587R) zunächst im bovinen und murinen Zellkulturmodellen untersucht. Primäre Chondrocyten wurden mit myc-markierten Wildtyp bzw. mutierten COMP-Konstrukten sowohl transfiziert als auch transduziert und in monolayer- und Alginatkulturen analysiert. Es stellte sich heraus, dass die Pathogenese vielfältiger ist als bisher angenommen, sodass PSACH und MED nicht nur als ER-Speicherkrankheit gelten können, sondern auch extrazelluläre Mechanismen eine Rolle spielen. Während es bei allen untersuchten Aspartat- Mutationen zu Sekretionsstörungen und einer Erweiterung des ER kommt, wird H587R COMP ungehindert sekretiert. Trotz der Verzögerung erreichen auch alle Aspartat-Mutanten letztendlich zu einem gewissen Teil die extrazelluläre Matrix. Chondrocyten, die PSACHassoziierte COMP-Varianten (D469, D475N, H587R) exprimieren, fehlt eine Matrix mit organisierten Collagen-Fibrillen. Stattdessen entstehen amorphe Aggregate. Die MEDassoziierte Mutation (D361Y) bewirkt, wie auch in ihrem Sekretionsverhalten, weniger drastische Veränderungen. Dies impliziert einen Zusammenhang zwischen zellulärem Phänotyp und Ausprägung der Krankheit. Die Induktion der Apoptose ist ungeachtet des Sekretionsverhaltens und des Phänotyps der extrazellulären Matrix bei allen Mutanten erhöht. Die Zellen weisen charakteristische intrazelluläre Veränderungen der Apoptose auf. Subtile Strukturänderungen von rekombinant exprimierten COMP-Varianten manifestieren sich in Abhängigkeit der Calciumkonzentration bzw. nach Entzug von Calcium. Diese Veränderungen wirken eindeutig auf die Funktion von COMP als Chaperon der Collagen- Fibrillogenese, obwohl die apparente Affinität sich nur unwesentlich unterscheidet. Während bei Aspartat-Mutationen die Fibrillogenese von Collagen I und II/XI im Vergleich zum Wildtyp Protein verzögert ist, scheint sie mit H587R COMP beschleunigt. Allerdings sind die durch Inkubation mit H587R COMP entstehenden Fibrillen erheblich in ihrer Struktur gestört, was im Einklang mit den beobachteten Aggregaten im Zellkulturmodell steht. Dass extrazelluläres mutiertes COMP auch zurück auf die Zellen wirken kann, wurde in Zelladhäsionsversuchen nachgewiesen. Entgegen der vorherrschenden Ansicht, wirken bei der Pathogenese von PSACH und MED sowohl intra- als auch extrazelluläre Mechanismen. Diese tragen zum erhöhten Zelltod und der Desintegration des Knorpelgewebes bei, die möglicherweise den Minderwuchs bedingen

Economic and political effects on currency clustering

Instead of considering currency pairs, we isolate a quantity that describes each currency’s position in the market, independent of a base currency. We apply the k-means++ clustering algorithm to analyze how the roles of currencies change over time, from reference status or minimal apprecia- tions and depreciations with respect to other currencies to large appreciations and depreciations. We show how different central bank interventions and economic and political developments, such as the cap on the Swiss franc to the euro enforced by the Swiss National Bank or the Brexit vote, affect the position of a currency in the global foreign exchange market.Accepted manuscrip

El impacto de la digitalización en la armonización de las normativas laborales y en los reglamentos de trabajo y empleo en dos estados miembros (Bélgica y los Países Bajos)

The contribution tries to grant an overview of two distinct but linked elements with regard to the digitalization of employment in the public sector. First, the transposition of the Framework Agreement on Telework shows how the public sector is treated as the poor relation in Belgium and the Netherlands. The second part analyses how digitalization has an impacto n the growing tendecy of flexibility in the public sector. Contracts of employment have become the standard in the Netherlands and a growing option in Belgium. Politicians invoke the search for flexibility which even leads to use of more temporary contracts and temporary forms of employment in the public due to the digitalization of the work. It seems that digitalization weakens the traditional status of public servants in Belgium and the Netherlands. Both elements indicates that labour relations in the public sector seem to be influenced and even weakened by evolutions in labour law
