Resolution of Nested Neuronal Representations Can Be Exponential in the Number of Neurons
Collective computation is typically polynomial in the number of computational elements, such as transistors or neurons, whether one considers the storage capacity of a memory device or the number of floating-point operations per second of a CPU. However, we show here that the capacity of a computational network to resolve real-valued signals of arbitrary dimensions can be exponential in N, even if the individual elements are noisy and unreliable. Nested, modular codes that achieve such high resolutions mirror the properties of grid cells in vertebrates, which underlie spatial navigation
Getting a kick out of the stellar disk(s) in the galactic center
Recent observations of the Galactic center revealed a nuclear disk of young
OB stars, in addition to many similar outlying stars with higher eccentricities
and/or high inclinations relative to the disk (some of them possibly belonging
to a second disk). Binaries in such nuclear disks, if they exist in
non-negligible fractions, could have a major role in the evolution of the disks
through binary heating of this stellar system. We suggest that interactions
with/in binaries may explain some (or all) of the observed outlying young stars
in the Galactic center. Such stars could have been formed in a disk, and later
on kicked out from it through binary related interactions, similar to ejection
of high velocity runaway OB stars in young clusters throughout the galaxy.Comment: 2 pages, 2 figs. To be published in the proceedings of the IAU 246

Investigating the noise residuals around the gravitational wave event GW150914
We use the Pearson cross-correlation statistic proposed by Liu and Jackson,
and employed by Creswell et al., to look for statistically significant
correlations between the LIGO Hanford and Livingston detectors at the time of
the binary black hole merger GW150914. We compute this statistic for the
calibrated strain data released by LIGO, using both the residuals provided by
LIGO and using our own subtraction of a maximum-likelihood waveform that is
constructed to model binary black hole mergers in general relativity. To assign
a significance to the values obtained, we calculate the cross-correlation of
both simulated Gaussian noise and data from the LIGO detectors at times during
which no detection of gravitational waves has been claimed. We find that after
subtracting the maximum likelihood waveform there are no statistically
significant correlations between the residuals of the two detectors at the time

Silicon Waveguides and Ring Resonators at 5.5 {\mu}m
We demonstrate low loss ridge waveguides and the first ring resonators for
the mid-infrared, for wavelengths ranging from 5.4 to 5.6 {\mu}m. Structures
were fabricated using electron-beam lithography on the silicon-on-sapphire
material system. Waveguide losses of 4.0 +/- 0.7 dB/cm are achieved, as well as
