Eliminating Network Protocol Vulnerabilities Through Abstraction and Systems Language Design

Incorrect implementations of network protocol message specifications affect the stability, security, and cost of network system development. Most implementation defects fall into one of three categories of well defined message constraints. However, the general process of constructing network protocol stacks and systems does not capture these categorical con- straints. We introduce a systems programming language with new abstractions that capture these constraints. Safe and efficient implementations of standard message handling operations are synthesized by our compiler, and whole-program analysis is used to ensure constraints are never violated. We present language examples using the OpenFlow protocol

Abstract

Background

The aim of this study was analyze associations between the practice of walking and environmental perception among elderly Brazilians in a region of low socioeconomic level.

Methods

A cross-sectional study was conducted among 385 elderly people aged 60 years and over. To evaluate walking, the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ), long version (leisure and transport modules) was used. The environment was evaluated by means of the Neighborhood Environmental Walkability Scale (NEWS) (adapted Brazilian version). For the statistical analysis, multiple logistic regression models were created separately for men and women. The practice of at least 150 minutes a week of walking was the dependent variable, and the variables of environmental perception were the independent variables. All the models were controlled for schooling level and age.

Results

The proportion of elderly people active in walking was 56.9% for the men and 26.4% for the women. The perception of the presence of soccer fields (OR = 4.12) and their proximity, within ten minutes' walk from home (OR = 3.43), were associated with the practice of walking among the men. The perception of the presence of public squares (OR = 4.70) and the proximity of primary healthcare units, within ten minutes' walk from home (OR = 3.71), were associated with the practice of walking among the women. An association with adequate perception of vehicle traffic remained at the threshold of significance for the women.

Conclusion

Accessibility of leisure structures such as football fields and public squares and of health services such as primary healthcare units were important environmental variables associated with the practice of walking among elderly people living in a region of low socioeconomic level in Brazil. These variables need to be taken into consideration when aiming to promote the practice of walking among elderly people living in similar regions.</p

Work Safety: Fuzzy Inference Model Specification for Evaluation of Heat Agent

    Get PDF
This research proposes an inference model fuzzy to analyses hazardous environmental work conditions, specifically insalubrious work conditions relevant for heat risk to support the safety engineers for making decisions. The article presents a study that consists of a fuzzy inference model specification for the evaluation of heat agents. The structure of model fuzzy used are inputs temperature and metabolic rate, while the output is work environment condition that could be salubrious or insalubrious. Through, the inference method Mamdani and rules established according to Brazil legislation about heat, Occupational Hygiene Standard 06, the proposed model can determine the work conditions about the heat. The validation process is done in an industry from the Industrial Pole of Manaus, therefor all the process necessary for preparations to use the proposed model is described to obtain all the variables necessary in the field. As a result, the proposed model got the correct classification of work environment conditions with pertinent results according to current legislation and technical expertise. &nbsp

Real world lessons that can assist construction organisations in implementing BIM to improve the OSH processes

Changing the way OSH management is performed with BIM is relevant. Several authors propose that real world cases need to be studied as there are few examples of studies covering BIM implementation for OSH. The UK PAS1192:6 introductory standard indicated some of the requisites and approaches to implementing BIM for OSH. Lessons from projects that have already implemented PAS 1192:6 will provide valuable inputs. This paper explores the stakeholders’ perceptions about benefits and barriers of adoption of BIM for OSH purposes using examples from a complex large project (Thames Tideway Tunnel). The methodology adopted was a survey of 39 project participants. The study focused on the following areas: collaboration, risk assessment, training and awareness, inspection of workplaces, work accidents, budget control, error detection, liaison between logistics and productivity. The implementation of the new BIM based approach to construction OSH management in this project shows that there is a very positive vision, namely in areas of risk assessment and training, in terms of the improvement of OSH management as well as of optimization of times and costs, better liaison between OSH and production, with increased production efficiency. This can potentially lead to a paradigm shift in OSH management in large projects
