Towards the architecture of an instructional multimedia database
The applicability of multimedia databases in education may be extended if they can serve multiple target groups, leading to affordable costs per unit for the user. In this contribution, an approach is described to build generic multimedia databases to serve that purpose. This approach is elaborated within the ODB Project ('Instructional Design of an Optical DataBase'); the term optical refers to the use of optical storage media to hold the audiovisual components. The project aims at developing a database in which a hypermedia encyclopedia is combined with instructional multimedia applications for different target groups at different educational levels. The architecture of the Optical Database will allow for switching between application types while working (for instance from tutorial instruction via the encyclopedia to a simulation and back). For instruction, the content of the database is thereby organized around so-called standard instruction routes: one route per target group. In the project, the teacher is regarded as the manager of instruction.\ud

From that perspective, the database is primarily organized as a teaching facility. Central to the research is the condition that the architecture of the Optical Database has to enable teachers to select and tailor instruction routes to their needs in a way that is perceived as logical and easy to use
High-pressure rheological analysis of CO2-induced melting point depression and viscosity reduction of poly(ε-caprolactone)
High-pressure rheology has been used to assess the effects of supercritical carbon dioxide (scCO2) on the melting point (Tm) and viscosity of poly (ε-caprolactone) (PCL) over a range of temperatures and pressures up to 300 bar over a wide range of shear rates. Plots of the storage and loss moduli against temperature show a significant shift of Tm to lower temperatures in the presence of CO2, indicating that the polymer crystals melt at temperatures much lower than the ambient pressure Tm. Furthermore, a significant decrease in the viscosity of two PCL grades with different molecular weight (Mn ~ 10 kDa and 80 kDa) was also detected upon increasing the CO2 pressure to 300 bar. Experimental viscosity data were fitted to the Carreau model to quantify the extent of the plasticising effects on the zero-shear viscosity and relaxation time under different conditions. Does Personality Type Affect Teachers’ Information Systems Utilization in Pedagogy? The Makerere University Lecturers’ Experience
International audienceThis article reports on personality types and their influence on lecturers’ information systems utilization in pedagogy in Makerere University. Findings are drawn from analyses of data that was collected from 244 lecturers who were purposively selected from six faculties. A self administered questionnaire, standardized tests, analytical interviews and inferential analyses were done by using Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) and Student –t test techniques. Findings indicate that as lecturers’ personality type preferences change, their attitudes and actual utilisation of information systems also change. Reasons that explain significant variation in both attitude and actual utilisation of specific MISs basing on particular bi-polar personalty type dimensions are given, as the article also suggests appropiate Information system tools and integration strategies that should be adopted in pedagogy by this oldest and biggest university in Uganda
