    An expeditious and consistent procedure for tetrahydrofuran (THF) drying and deoxygenation by the still apparatus

    Despite the availability of alternative methods for drying tetrahydrofuran (THF), the use of the still apparatus, wherein a THF solution containing Na-bezophenone ketyl is heated to reflux, remains widespread. We herein propose a set of procedures to solve the problems usually faced in applying this drying technique. Moreover, a discussion is made on the chemical knowledge underlying such procedures. Safety and economy issues concerned with the operation of the THF still apparatus are also discussed

    Computational fact checking from knowledge networks

    Traditional fact checking by expert journalists cannot keep up with the enormous volume of information that is now generated online. Computational fact checking may significantly enhance our ability to evaluate the veracity of dubious information. Here we show that the complexities of human fact checking can be approximated quite well by finding the shortest path between concept nodes under properly defined semantic proximity metrics on knowledge graphs. Framed as a network problem this approach is feasible with efficient computational techniques. We evaluate this approach by examining tens of thousands of claims related to history, entertainment, geography, and biographical information using a public knowledge graph extracted from Wikipedia. Statements independently known to be true consistently receive higher support via our method than do false ones. These findings represent a significant step toward scalable computational fact-checking methods that may one day mitigate the spread of harmful misinformation

    In this work, a new catalytic approach for the C-O activation of enol phosphates based on a palladium supported on layered double hydroxide was developed. In this case, two different ketene aminal phosphates were used as models to study the synthesis of α-phenyl enecarbamates N-Boc/CBz under the Suzuki-Miyaura conditions. The use of an ortho-bromoaniline as precursor allowed the synthesis of the 2-phenyl indole through an arylation/Heck cyclization. Catalyst reusability enabled the synthesis of the heterocycle in moderate yields for four consecutive runs

    Straightforward, microscale, Ellman's cholinesterase test procedures are presented, useful for screening of novel compounds aiming at neurodegenerative diseases and antidotes towards nerve agents and pesticides. Herein, we detail the different procedure features and set forth guidelines on experimental choices researchers may make. The detailed procedure lowers the costs for Ellman´s test, what is highly desirable for low-budget groups in science-lagging and developing countries

    Molecular Modeling and In Vitro Studies of a Neutral Oxime as a Potential Reactivator for Acetylcholinesterase Inhibited by Paraoxon

    The present work aimed to compare the small, neutral and monoaromatic oxime, isatin-3-oxime (isatin-O), to the commercial ones, pralidoxime (2-PAM) and obidoxime, in a search for a new potential reactivator for acetylcholinesterase (AChE) inhibited by the pesticide paraoxon (AChE/POX) as well as a novel potential scaffold for further synthetic modifications. The multicriteria decision methods (MCDM) allowed the identification of the best docking poses of those molecules inside AChE/POX for further molecular dynamic (MD) studies, while Ellman’s modified method enabled in vitro inhibition and reactivation assays. In corroboration with the theoretical studies, our experimental results showed that isatin-O have a reactivation potential capable of overcoming 2-PAM at the initial moments of the assay. Despite not achieving better results than obidoxime, this molecule is promising for being an active neutral oxime with capacity of crossing the blood⁻brain barrier (BBB), to reactivate AChE/POX inside the central and peripheral nervous systems. Moreover, the fact that isatin-O can also act as anticonvulsant makes this molecule a possible multipotent reactivator. Besides, the MCDM method showed to be an accurate method for the selection of the best docking poses generated in the docking studies

    Determination of the strong coupling constant from transverse energy-energy correlations in multijet events at s \sqrt{s} = 13 TeV with the ATLAS detector

    Measurements of transverse energy-energy correlations and their associated azimuthal asymmetries in multijet events are presented. The analysis is performed using a data sample corresponding to 139 fb1^{−1} of proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of s \sqrt{s} = 13 TeV, collected with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. The measurements are presented in bins of the scalar sum of the transverse momenta of the two leading jets and unfolded to particle level. They are then compared to next-to-next-to-leading-order perturbative QCD calculations for the first time, which feature a significant reduction in the theoretical uncertainties estimated using variations of the renormalisation and factorisation scales. The agreement between data and theory is good, thus providing a precision test of QCD at large momentum transfers Q. The strong coupling constant αs_{s} is extracted as a function of Q, showing a good agreement with the renormalisation group equation and with previous analyses. A simultaneous fit to all transverse energy-energy correlation distributions across different kinematic regions yields a value of αs(mZ)=0.1175±0.0006(exp.)0.0017+0.0034(theo.) {\alpha}_{\textrm{s}}\left({m}_Z\right)=0.1175\pm 0.0006{\left(\exp .\right)}_{-0.0017}^{+0.0034}\left(\textrm{theo}.\right) , while the global fit to the asymmetry distributions yields αs(mZ)=0.1185±0.0009(exp.)0.0012+0.0025(theo.) {\alpha}_{\textrm{s}}\left({m}_Z\right)=0.1185\pm 0.0009{\left(\exp .\right)}_{-0.0012}^{+0.0025}\left(\textrm{theo}.\right) .[graphic not available: see fulltext
