    NURE: An ERC project to study nuclear reactions for neutrinoless double beta decay

    Neutrinoless double beta decay (0νββ) is considered the best potential resource to access the absolute neutrino mass scale. Moreover, if observed, it will signal that neutrinos are their own anti-particles (Majorana particles). Presently, this physics case is one of the most important research “beyond Standard Model” and might guide the way towards a Grand Unified Theory of fundamental interactions. Since the 0νββ decay process involves nuclei, its analysis necessarily implies nuclear structure issues. In the NURE project, supported by a Starting Grant of the European Research Council (ERC), nuclear reactions of double charge-exchange (DCE) are used as a tool to extract information on the 0νββ Nuclear Matrix Elements. In DCE reactions and ββ decay indeed the initial and final nuclear states are the same and the transition operators have similar structure. Thus the measurement of the DCE absolute cross-sections can give crucial information on ββ matrix elements. In a wider view, the NUMEN international collaboration plans a major upgrade of the INFN-LNS facilities in the next years in order to increase the experimental production of nuclei of at least two orders of magnitude, thus making feasible a systematic study of all the cases of interest as candidates for 0νββ

    The protection of minors in ICT networks: the liability of the Internet providers

    Italian (and EU) legislation in force does not appear to address the protection of minors in ICT networks in a completely satisfactory manner. Such conclusion especially arises when one considers that no liability is attributed on providers which only transmit information generated by a recipient of their service, or which merely give access to a communication network, with only a few specific exceptions. On the other hand, it cannot be said that a wider protection is afforded by the Italian self-regulation Code on the Internet and minors, signed in 2003. This Code is hardly a binding legal instrument, being rather an agreement among the parties who signed it. Above all, it is the lack of a diffused culture of prevention and sensitivity among providers to be more evident. As a matter of fact such gap of protection of minors has clearly surfaced many times over the recent years. Having in mind the above framework, the present work is aimed to analyse some aspects of the protection of minors in ICT communications and the liability of provid-ers under private law in the Italian legal system

    Tyrosinemia type III (OMIM 2767 10) is an autosomal recessive disorder caused by the deficiency of 4-hydroxyphenylpyruvate dioxygenase (4-HPD). Few cases have been described with mental retardation or neurological symptoms. Recently it has been demonstrated that 4-HPD participates to nitric oxide (NO) intracellular sequestration in Pseudomonas aeruginosa. 4-HPD is an ubiquitous enzyme with a prominent expression in neutrophils and neurons. In the nervous system NO has been perceived to be a potential neuromodulator although prolonged excessive generation is detrimental. We analyzed NO release by neutrophils of a patient with tyrosinemia type III in order to evaluate a possible influence of 4-HPD deficiency on this process. Our patient, previously described, is a 30-year-old women with persistent tyrosinemia (450-680 mu mol/1) and deficient activity of 4-HPD. At 17 months of age she experienced an acute ataxia and drowsiness lasting for 10 days, but further clinical course showed persistent tyrosinemia with normal growth and psychomotor development. Neutrophils isolated from our patient exhibited a NO release greatly higher in respect to the controls (mean +/- SEM 23.2 +/- 1.8 micromol/10(6) cells vs 3.5 +/- 0.5 micromol/10(6) cells). Clinical findings of tyrosinemia type III include neurological symptoms and mental retardation but no consistent phenotype has emerged. Therefore the pathogenesis of neurological involvement is yet not well understood. Our results suggest that an excessive neutrophils of NO release could reflect the lack of scavenging action of 4-HPD. Considering the prominent expression of this enzyme in neurons, we hypothesize that excessive NO release could participate in neuronal damage explaining the neurological involvement described in patients with tyrosinemia type III.     Prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) is an activator of bone remodeling, and increase levels of PGE2 are found in several disorders characterized by chronic inflammation. Bisphosphonates are used in the treatment of osteogenesis imperfecta (OI), an inherited disorder characterized by bone fragility and low bone mass. We evaluated the serum PGE2 (ng/mL) level in 16 children affected by OI (11 with mild and 5 with severe forms) at basal time and during treatment with neridronate. The levels of PGE2 in mild and severe forms were increased at basal time compared with controls (13.14 ± 4.2 versus 0.72 ± 0.05, p < 0.01; 15.1 ± 1.5 versus 0.72 ± 0.05, p < 0.01, respectively) and showed a significant decrease after the second (T1) cycle of treatment (mild: 4.97 ± 5.0 versus 13.14 ± 4.2, p < 0.01; severe: 5.32 ± 4.5 versus 15.1 ± 1.5, p < 0.01) with a further significant decrease after the fourth (T2) cycle. The high basal PGE2 levels in OI, a noninflammatory disorder, could be explained by stress-induced release mediated by inducible cyclooxygenase-2-catalyzed pathway. The reduction obtained by treatment with bisphosphonates could be attributed to a direct pharmacological effect since these drugs has been reported to modulate the release of proinflammatory mediators

    New SARS-CoV-2 Infection Detected in an Italian Pet Cat by RT-qPCR from Deep Pharyngeal Swab

    The pandemic respiratory disease COVID-19, caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), emerged in Wuhan in December 2019 and then spread throughout the world; Italy was the most affected European country. Despite close pet&ndash;human contact, little is known about the predisposition of pets to SARS-CoV-2. Among these, felines are the most susceptible. In this study, a domestic cat with clear clinical signs of pneumonia, confirmed by Rx imaging, was found to be infected by SARS-CoV-2 using quantitative RT&ndash;qPCR from a nasal swab. This is the first Italian study responding to the request of the scientific community to focus attention on the possible role of pets as a viral reservoir. An important question remains unanswered: did the cat actually die due to SARS-CoV-2 infection

    Comparative Study Regarding the Adherence to the Mediterranean Diet and the Eating Habits of Two Groups—The Romanian Children and Adolescents Living in Nord-West of Romania and Their Romanian Counterparts Living in Italy

    Background: The Mediterranean diet (MD) is associated with significant health benefits, including prevention of noncommunicable diseases (NCDs). Given the important migratory flow from Romania to Italy in recent decades, this study seeks to evaluate the differences between the nutritional habits of Romanian children and adolescents in Romania compared with those of Romanian children who moved to Italy or were born in Italy from both Romanian parents. Method: To assess adherence to MD, parents of Romanian children in Romania (RCR) and Romanian children in Italy (RCI) answered questions from an adapted version of the KIDMED test. Results: The results show that the high KIDMED index among RCI is significantly higher than the same index among RCR (68.09 versus 17.76, p &lt; 0.05). RCR obtained a higher KIDMED score on different items: they had a lower consumption of fast food and sweets but an increased consumption of nuts, yogurts, and cheese. Conclusions: RCI have a better adherence to MD, but, at the same time, they are more exposed to westernized diet and practice less physical activity.
