    A Systematic Review of Anti-malarial Properties, Immunosuppressive Properties, Anti-inflammatory Properties, and Anti-cancer Properties of Artemisia Annua.

    Artemisia annua belongs to the asteraceae family, indigenous to the mild climate of Asia. The aim of this study was to overview its anti-malarial properties, immunosuppressive properties, anti-inflammatory properties and anti-cancer properties. This systematic review was carried out by searching studies in PubMed, Medline, Web of Science, and IranMedex databases. The initial search strategy identified approximately ninety eight references. In this study, forty six studies were accepted for further screening and met all of our inclusion. The search terms were "Artemisia annua", "therapeutic properties", "and pharmacological effects". Artemisia annua is commonly used for its anti-malarial, immunosuppressive anti-inflammatory properties. Artemisia annua contributes to the treatment of various diseases such as diabetes, heart diseases, arthritis and eczema and possesses various effects such as antibacterial, antioxidant, anticoccidial, and antiviral effects. Furthermore, it was said to be good for cancer treatment. In this study, anti-malarial, immunosuppressive, anti-inflammatory properties of this plant are presented using published articles in scientific sites

    A systematic review study of therapeutic effects of Matricaria recuitta chamomile (chamomile).

    INTRODUCTION Matricaria recuitta chamomilla is a plant that grows and is cultivated in some parts of Iran. The aim of this study was to overview the therapeutic effects of this valuable plant. This systematic review was aimed to introduce Matricaria recuitta chamomile, its chemical compounds, and its traditional usages. METHODS This review article was carried out by searching studies in PubMed, Medline, Web of Science, and IranMedex databases. The initial search strategy identified about 87 references. In this study, 69 studies were accepted for further screening and met all our inclusion criteria [in English, full text, therapeutic effects of Matricaria recuitta chamomilla L and dated mainly from the year 1990 to 2016]. The search terms were "Matricaria recuitta chamomilla L.," "therapeutic properties," "pharmacological effects." RESULT It is commonly used for its antioxidant, antimicrobial, antidepressant, anti-inflammatory, antidiarrheal activities, angiogenesis activity, anticarcinogenic, hepatoprotective, and antidiabetic effects. Besides, it is beneficial for knee osteoarthritis, ulcerative colitis, premenstrual syndrome, and gastrointestinal disorders. CONCLUSION Matricaria recuitta chamomilla L. is widely used for therapeutic and nontherapeutic purposes that trigger its significant value. Various combinations and numerous medicinal properties of its extract, oil, and leaves demand further studies about other useful and unknown properties of this multipurpose plant

    Leukocyte telomere length and obesity in children and adolescents: A systematic review and meta-analysis

    Background: Several studies have revealed the negative effects of adiposity on telomere length shortening. However, the results of the studies assessing the negative relationship between obesity and leukocyte telomere length (LTL) are not consistent. This systematic review and meta-analysis are aimed to pool the results of articles assessing the relationship between obesity and LTL among children and adolescents.Methods: To retrieve the related studies, four online databases including PubMed, Embase, ProQuest, and Scopus were searched until May 2022. Observational studies evaluating the relationship between obesity and LTL among apparently healthy children and adolescents (aged ≤18 years) were included in the study. We considered the studies that had reported a mean ± standard deviation of LTL. The random-effects model was used to assess the pooled weighted mean difference (WMD) and a 95% confidence interval (CI).Results: The search yielded seven studies from an initial 3,403 records identified. According to the results of seven articles with 4,546 participants, obesity was associated with LTL shortening among children and adolescents (WMD = −0.081; 95% CI: −0.137 to −0.026; p = 0.004; I2 = 99.9%). Also, no publication bias was observed. According to the results of subgrouping, significant results were only attributed to the studies conducted in Europe, with high quality scores, among overweight and obese adolescents, with a baseline LTL lower than 1, and performed in community-based school settings. Also, according to the subgrouping and meta-regression results, the obesity definition criteria and baseline LTL were the possible sources of between-study heterogeneity.Conclusion: We observed shorter LTL among overweight and obese children and adolescents. To obtain more reliable results, further longitudinal prospective studies with large sample sizes and more consistent and accurate definitions of obesity are required

    A Wegner's Granulomatosis Risk Prediction Model Based on Machine Learning Algorithms

    Introduction: Prediction of Wegener's granulomatosis diagnosis and relapse is a complex process. In this study, we applied machine learning algorithms to predict Wegener's granulomatosis relapse. Methods: In this research, 189 patients admitted to Amiralam Hospital were studied and followed for approximately 2 years. Patient features included demographics, organ involvement, symptoms, and other clinical data. Different popular machine learning algorithms were applied for predicting Wegener's granulomatosis relapse, including Support Vector Machines, Random Forest, Gradient Boosting, and XGBoost algorithms. The prediction model performance was measured for the different candidate prediction algorithms using accuracy, precision, recall, and F1-measure. The selected prediction model performance was calculated based on different relapse rates and major relapse occurrence according to Birmingham Vasculitis Activity Score (BVAS) fields. Results: Applying different machine learning algorithms, the XGBoost algorithm performed the best. The results indicated that the prediction model's performance increased when calculating higher relapse rate possibilities. The XGBoost model had 82% accuracy while predicting more than one relapse rate and 92% accuracy in predicting more than twice the relapse rate. We also calculated the SHAP value for the prediction model. The results indicated that Cr, BVAS, lymphocyte percentage, vitamin D, nose involvement, alkaline phosphatase, diagnosis age, white blood cell count, erythrocyte sedimentation rate, and initial nose presentation are the 10 most important features according to SHAP value. Conclusion: In this study, we have developed Wegener's granulomatosis relapse prediction model using machine learning algorithms. We achieved reasonable precision and recall for early prediction and decision- making regarding Wegener's granulomatosis relaps

    Learning and Motivational Outcomes of Real Patient versus Written Scenario: Perspective of Medical Students

    Introduction: How to present a scenario in case-based learning sessions and its educational outcomes is in question. The aim of this study was to investigate the viewpoints of medical students of Tehran University of Medical Sciences about the learning and motivational outcomes of using real patients in comparison with written scenarios in case-based learning sessions of basic sciences program. Methods: This descriptive, cross-sectional study was conducted on 85 medical students of Tehran University of Medical Sciences in 2017. Subjects were selected by convenience sampling method and 74 students completed a questionnaire. Case-based learning sessions were conducted using written scenarios in the first year of the basic sciences program. In the second year, case-based immunology discussion sessions were held by inviting real patients and the students’ opinions were assessed using a valid and reliable researcher-made questionnaire. Data were analyzed by means of descriptive statistics. Results: All of the students believed that the presence of a patient was more interesting and challenging than the written scenarios. Seventy-three students (98.22%) preferred an actual patient to a written scenario. Sixty-nine students (92.86%) stated that the presence of a real patient had a greater impact on their learning than the written scenarios. Seventy-three students (98.22%) believed that the use of real patients in basic sciences courses would increase their motivation to attend the classes. Conclusion: The medical students seem to prefer real patients to written scenarios in case-based learning sessions. They believe that real patients are more interesting and challenging, have greater impact on learning and retention, and are more effective in the understanding the link between basic sciences and clinical trainings, as well as studying basic sciences

    A systematic review of the relationship between dystemprament (sue Mizaj) and treatments and management of diseases (Ilaj and Eslah-e-Mizaj)

    Background: Temperament refers to four different humors differentiating in individuals and, as a result, proposes specific therapy for diseases as well as special types of management (avoidance). Objective: The aim of this study was to overview the relationship between dystemprament and treatment and management of diseases. Methods: A computerized search of published articles was performed using PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and Medline databases as well as local sources from 1965 to 2016. Additional sources were identified through cross-referencing. Original and translated books were also used. Of the whole 105 articles, 40 of them were selected as our database. The search terms used were as follows: temperament, dystemprament, diseases, sue mizaj, treatments, management. Results: The findings of this study indicated that many remedies are used based on traditional medicine to cure disorders derived from dystemprament such as different kinds of regimen, diet, and drugs. The result of this study shows that regimental therapy contributes to the treatment of some disorders such as muscular dystrophy; Alzheimer’s; MS; epilepsy; falij; convulsion; depression; eye diseases; ear disease; mouth, tongue, teeth disease; common cold (nazle); asthma; polyphagia or anorexia; heart diseases; esophagus; peptic ulcer; herpes simplex; liver; colic; jaundice; spleen; kidney and bladder diseases; hemorrhoid; stomach worm; hyperlipidemia. Further, the findings suggest that dietotherapy is beneficial to treat and manage some disease such as sinusitis, lung, asthma, fever, muscular dystrophy, esophagus, peptic ulcer, liver, mouth, tongue, teeth disease, heart disease, polyphagia or anorexia, kidney and bladder diseases, MS, insomnia, piles, acne, permanent ejaculation, anemia, angina and heart attack, sore throat (tonsillitis), osteo-arthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, gout, and impotency. Conclusion: While traditional medicine contains many useful, less expensive, and even cheap and less risky remedies for lots of morbidities, modern medicine makes them appear nonrelevant.     A pharmacological class known as immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) has been developed as a potential treatment option for various malignancies, including HCC. In HCC, ICIs have demonstrated clinically significant advantages as monotherapy or combination therapy. ICIs that target programmed cell death protein 1 (PD-1) and programmed cell death protein ligand 1 (PD-L1), as well as cytotoxic T lymphocyte antigen 4 (CTLA-4), have made significant advances in cancer treatment. In hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), several ICIs are being tested in clinical trials, and the area is quickly developing.
