A intervenção em património histórico observa hoje uma necessidade de definir estratégias de intervenção através de equipas multidisciplinares que permitam estabelecer um uso qualificado dos seus espaços antigos, proporcionando experiências sensoriais de bem-estar e segurança, contribuindo para um melhor ambiente urbano. Esta necessidade apresenta diversos desafios para projectistas e para proprietários. Afinal, o que se entende por uso qualificado? Será possível, ou até desejável, reestabelecer os usos originais? Que tipo de uso poderá ser implementado em tipologias arquitectónicas pensadas para um modo de vida que não se enquadra na vida contemporânea? E, nessa perspectiva de actualização de uso para as necessidades contemporâneas, quais os critérios a adoptar na alteração do espaço físico para a sua adaptação a estes novos usos? Para além destas questões, encontram-se junto dos proprietários preocupações do ponto de vista do investimento inerente e da sua viabilidade económica quando se procura devolver um património fechado e inerte ao uso e à comunidade.(...

a values-based approach to architectural heritage conservation

UID/HIS/04666/2019The presence of the term ‘cultural significance’ in heritage conservation guidelines issued by ICOMOS, UNESCO and more recently the Council of Europe (CoE) has shifted the origin of evaluation of historic environments from experts to users. The social impact of architectural conservation is, therefore, a topic in need of research, so that cultural heritage values can be enhanced and not mitigated by inattentive interventions. In this presentation the values of a specific building typology of our common cultural heritage will be discussed, and a methodology developed to evaluate the impact of architectural conservation practices will be presented, using historic schools in Portugal as case studies. The presentation will conclude on the value of the use of research and evaluation methods in the built environment stakeholders when addressing the case of architectural conservation of historic schools.publishersversionpublishe

the case of Monasteries in architectural education and professional practice

UID/HIS/04666/2013Social memory holds values relevant to the continuity of an architectural culture that, for political or other reasons, loses its raison d’être. Without social memory, places become mere spaces. In the case of architectural heritage environments such as Portuguese monasteries, where the abrupt end of their religious use in the early nineteenth century has left them without social memories, it can be asked how these current spaces, some in ruins, can be restored to contemporaneity. How much experience, and learning from experience, is needed to establish an informed conservation strategy that mitigates negative impacts and is socially sustainable through its preservation of past and current values for the benefit of future generations? In this symposium, the challenge is to intersect two themes – architectural design education and current architectural practice – under the main topic of the preservation of cultural heritage, and to find a common ground where experiences can be explored. The opportunity to reflect on architectural education and architectural practice, framed by Kolb’s theoretical framework of reflective thinking, and using the case of the conservation of Portuguese monasteries, reveals the impact of time on the choice of teaching and learning objectives, as well as on practice design decisions.publishersversionpublishe

The return of the Follies From Traditional to Digital

The French word folie stands for delight and pleasure, and therefore fun and happiness. First built in the late 16th and early 17th centuries, follies were buildings constructed purely for aesthetic pleasure, with a notion of nonsense, i.e., with a lack of good sense or foresight, resulting in often extravagant pieces of architecture with no particular function. These architectural features could be found in gardens and in the wider landscape; towers, temples, sham castles, pyramids, grottoes, obelisques or mock ruins of classical buildings, seemingly randomly abandoned, were symbolic statements of constructions not easily understood, sometimes with a practical value as landmarks, conversations places, commemorative of a person or event, as lending interest to a view, or as simple amusement places, often offering a sensorial experience

Palácio da Quinta do Marquês do Alegrete: estratégias de devolução de espaço, tempo e memória

Palaces, as an architectural typology, can be found in recreation Quintas that surrounded the main cities in Portugal, which preserved its rural character since the 16th century until the middle of the 19th century. Consisting of cultivated land and farm buildings, the palace of the Quinta was the owner´s temporary residence, for summer holidays and festive events, with gardens, pavilions, fountains and lakes for recreational purposes and leisure. The focus on palaces, as a historic building and as in need of new uses, clearly shows how current the debate on contemporary interventions in this heritage typology is. Interventions in architectural heritage require multidisciplinary teams to identify conservation strategies which enable a qualified use of its spaces, such as for example the experience of security and well-being, which can contribute to a better quality of life and simultaneously to the quality of the urban environment. This paper presents the Palace of Quinta Alegre and its rehabilitation project for contemporary use and public esteem, both of which are considered fundamental prerequisites for its sustainable maintenance in space, in time and in memory. [versão Portuguesa] Sob a denominação de tipologia arquitectónica, o edifício Palácio pode ser encontrado nas Quintas de Recreio que rodeavam as principais cidades Portuguesas, tendo preservado o seu carácter rural, desde o século XVI até metade do século XIX. Consistindo as Quintas em terra cultivada e edifícios rurais, o Palácio da Quinta consistia na residência temporária do proprietário, para férias de verão e eventos comemorativos, dispondo de jardins, pavilhões, fontes e lagos para recreação e lazer. O tema dos Palácios, entendido como edifício histórico que procura novos usos, demonstra como é actual o debate sobre intervenções contemporâneas nesta tipologia de valor patrimonial. A intervenção em património arquitectónico requer a definição de estratégias de conservação por equipas multidisciplinares que permitam estabelecer um uso qualificado dos seus espaços, proporcionando experiências sensoriais de bem-estar e segurança, contribuindo para uma melhor qualidade de vida e, simultaneamente, para a qualidade do ambiente urbano em que se insere.
