    Electromagnetically Induced Transparency and Slow Light with Optomechanics

    Controlling the interaction between localized optical and mechanical excitations has recently become possible following advances in micro- and nano-fabrication techniques. To date, most experimental studies of optomechanics have focused on measurement and control of the mechanical subsystem through its interaction with optics, and have led to the experimental demonstration of dynamical back-action cooling and optical rigidity of the mechanical system. Conversely, the optical response of these systems is also modified in the presence of mechanical interactions, leading to strong nonlinear effects such as Electromagnetically Induced Transparency (EIT) and parametric normal-mode splitting. In atomic systems, seminal experiments and proposals to slow and stop the propagation of light, and their applicability to modern optical networks, and future quantum networks, have thrust EIT to the forefront of experimental study during the last two decades. In a similar fashion, here we use the optomechanical nonlinearity to control the velocity of light via engineered photon-phonon interactions. Our results demonstrate EIT and tunable optical delays in a nanoscale optomechanical crystal device, fabricated by simply etching holes into a thin film of silicon (Si). At low temperature (8.7 K), we show an optically-tunable delay of 50 ns with near-unity optical transparency, and superluminal light with a 1.4 microseconds signal advance. These results, while indicating significant progress towards an integrated quantum optomechanical memory, are also relevant to classical signal processing applications. Measurements at room temperature and in the analogous regime of Electromagnetically Induced Absorption (EIA) show the utility of these chip-scale optomechanical systems for optical buffering, amplification, and filtering of microwave-over-optical signals.Comment: 15 pages, 9 figure

    Analysis of the impact of length of stay on the quality of service experience, satisfaction and loyalty

    Although length of stay is a relevant variable in destination management, little research has been produced connecting it with tourists' post-consumption behaviour. This research compares the post-consumption behaviour of same-day visitors with overnight tourists in a sample of 398 domestic vacationers at two Mediterranean heritage-and-beach destinations. Although economic research on length of stay posits that there are destination benefits in longer stays, same-day visitors score higher in most of the post-consumption variables under study. Significant differences arise in hedonic aspects of the tourist experience and destination loyalty. Thus, we propose that length of stay can be used as a segmentation variable. Furthermore, destination management organisations need to consider length of stay when designing tourism policies. The tourist product and communication strategies might be adapted to different vacation durations

    Lymphocytes and macrophages of the epidermis and dermis in lesional psoriatic skin, but not epidermal Langerhans cells, are depleted by treatment with cyclosporin A

    Since cyclosporin A (CsA) is an immuno-suppressive agent, its beneficial effect in psoriasis suggests that immune cells may play a role in the pathogenesis and resolution of psoriasis. To determine early effects of CsA in psoriasis, we quantitated immune cells using double immunofluorescence microscopy on biopsy specimens obtained prior to therapy and after 3,7, and 14 days of CsA therapy. CsA therapy resulted in significant reductions in the absolute number of immune cells (including T cells, monocytes/macrophages, and antigen presenting cells) contained within psoriatic skin. The effect was rapid, with over one-half of the reduction in the density of HLe1 + (human leukocyte antigen-1 positive or bone marrow derived) cells, including T cells, activated T cells, monocytes, and Langerhans cells (LCs), occurring within 3 days. Despite the overall reduction in the numbers of immunocytes in the skin, the proportion of T cells, Langerhans cells, and monocytes in relation to the total number of immune cells was unchanged with therapy, reflecting equally proportional losses of each subtype. Dermal CD1 + DR + cells (putative Langerhans cells), which are not found in normal skin but are present in lesional psoriasis skin, were virtually cleared from the papillary dermis after CsA therapy. Although absolute numbers of epidermal Langerhans cells, defined as cells expressing both CD1 (T6) and DR molecules (CD1 + DR + ), were also reduced after CsA, epidermal non-Langerhans CD1 - DR + cells (macrophages, activated T cells, DR - keratinocytes) demonstrated a proportionally greater decrease, with the ratio of CD1 + DR + Langerhans cells/non-Langerhans CD1 - DR + epidermal cells changing from a mean of 0.82 at baseline to 1.92 at day 14.     Effects of Jumping Exercise on Muscular Power in Older Adults: A Meta-Analysis.

    Background Jump training (JT) can be used to enhance the ability of skeletal muscle to exert maximal force in as short a time as possible. Despite its usefulness as a method of performance enhancement in athletes, only a small number of studies have investigated its effects on muscle power in older adults. Objectives The aims of this meta-analysis were to measure the effect of JT on muscular power in older adults (≥ 50 years), and to establish appropriate programming guidelines for this population. Data sources The data sources utilised were Google Scholar, PubMed, and Microsoft Academic. Study eligibility criteria Studies were eligible for inclusion if they comprised JT interventions in healthy adults (≥ 50 years) who were free of any medical condition that could impair movement. Study appraisal and synthesis methods The inverse variance random-effects model for meta-analyses was used because it allocates a proportionate weight to trials based on the size of their individual standard errors and facilitates analysis while accounting for heterogeneity across studies. Effect sizes (ESs), calculated from a measure of muscular power, were represented by the standardised mean difference and were presented alongside 95% confidence intervals (CIs). Results Thirteen training groups across nine studies were included in this meta-analysis. The magnitude of the main effect was 'moderate' (0.66, 95% CI 0.33, 0.98). ESs were larger in non-obese participants (body mass index [BMI] < 30 vs. ≥ 30 kg/m²; 1.03 [95% CI 0.34, 1.73] vs. 0.53 [95% CI - 0.03, 1.09]). Among the studies included in this review, just one reported an acute injury, which did not result in the participant ceasing their involvement. JT was more effective in programmes with more than one exercise (range 1-4 exercises; ES = 0.74 [95% CI - 0.49, 1.96] vs. 0.53 [95% CI 0.29, 0.78]), more than two sets per exercise (range 1-4 sets; ES = 0.91 [95% CI 0.04, 1.77] vs. 0.68 [95% CI 0.15, 1.21]), more than three jumps per set (range 1-14 jumps; ES = 1.02 [95% CI 0.16, 1.87] vs. 0.53 [95% CI - 0.03, 1.09]) and more than 25 jumps per session (range 6-200 jumps; ES = 0.88 [95% CI 0.05, 1.70] vs. 0.49 [95% CI 0.14, 0.83]). Conclusions JT is safe and effective in older adults. Practitioners should construct varied JT programmes that include more than one exercise and comprise more than two sets per exercise, more than three jumps per set, and 60 s of recovery between sets. An upper limit of three sets per exercise and ten jumps per set is recommended. Up to three training sessions per week can be performed

    Atalntic Bird Traits: a data set of bird morphological traits from the Atlantic forests of South America

    Scientists have long been trying to understand why the Neotropical region holds the highest diversity of birds on Earth. Recently, there has been increased interest in morphological variation between and within species, and in how climate, topography, and anthropogenic pressures may explain and affect phenotypic variation. Because morphological data are not always available for many species at the local or regional scale, we are limited in our understanding of intra- and interspecies spatial morphological variation. Here, we present the ATLANTIC BIRD TRAITS, a data set that includes measurements of up to 44 morphological traits in 67,197 bird records from 2,790 populations distributed throughout the Atlantic forests of South America. This data set comprises information, compiled over two centuries (1820–2018), for 711 bird species, which represent 80% of all known bird diversity in the Atlantic Forest. Among the most commonly reported traits are sex (n = 65,717), age (n = 63,852), body mass (n = 58,768), flight molt presence (n = 44,941), molt presence (n = 44,847), body molt presence (n = 44,606), tail length (n = 43,005), reproductive stage (n = 42,588), bill length (n = 37,409), body length (n = 28,394), right wing length (n = 21,950), tarsus length (n = 20,342), and wing length (n = 18,071). The most frequently recorded species are Chiroxiphia caudata (n = 1,837), Turdus albicollis (n = 1,658), Trichothraupis melanops (n = 1,468), Turdus leucomelas (n = 1,436), and Basileuterus culicivorus (n = 1,384). The species recorded in the greatest number of sampling localities are Basileuterus culicivorus (n = 243), Trichothraupis melanops (n = 242), Chiroxiphia caudata (n = 210), Platyrinchus mystaceus (n = 208), and Turdus rufiventris (n = 191). ATLANTIC BIRD TRAITS (ABT) is the most comprehensive data set on measurements of bird morphological traits found in a biodiversity hotspot; it provides data for basic and applied research at multiple scales, from individual to community, and from the local to the macroecological perspectives.
