The UPC digital campus and the project based learning: a compatibility effort

    Get PDF
The Digital Campus is a project developed in the Technical University of Catalonia (Spain) to build an asynchronous collaboration platform in a educational environment. The Digital Campus is a set of applications with a unique and simple interface that helps to improve the interaction between professor and students beyond the limited relationship in classroom. These applications are developed in Lotus Domino (a documental database) and the user can access them through a web browser or a Lotus Notes client. Since 2001, one of its school, the Polytechnic School of Castelldefels, offers a Master's degree in Telecommunication Engineering using the Project Based Learning (PBL) methodology, where the student as an individual become a student as a member of a group. The aim of this paper is to explain the overall functionalities of the Digital Campus and the experience of the adaptation of this collaboration tool to this new learning methodology.Peer ReviewedPostprint (published version

The digital platform for the Unite! alliance: the metacampus

    Get PDF
Nine European technology universities constitute the Unite! Alliance, a network that creates a new model for a virtual and physical European interuniversity campus through close cooperation, physical and virtual mobility of members, joint programmes, communities that support teaching innovation, and open and entrepreneurial innovation networks. The Metacampus virtual campus platform is an important aspect of this framework. All participants in the Unite! Community can join at the Metacampus, which coexists alongside other universities' virtual campuses. It must become a valuable and useful tool for a wide range of users who are used to very different tools and processes, which is only one of the many difficulties it faces. The Moodle platform was chosen as the base for the work, and it was decided to maximise its features while minimising the amount of new innovations required to achieve the goals. After four years, the number of users who have registered and taken part in the activities that have been suggested enables us to draw the conclusion that the path is the right one for handling a challenge like the design and execution of a multi-university virtual campus. This work has been supported by Unite! Alliance that has received funding from the European Union's Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreement No 101017408, and Co-funded by the Erasmus+ Programme of the European Union.Peer ReviewedPostprint (author's final draft

ATENEA UPC and the new "Activity Stream" or "Wall" feature

    Get PDF
The Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya–Barcelona Tech (UPC), has added a new feature to its ATENEA UPC e-Learning platform based on Moodle. ATENEA UPC Service is UPC’s e-Learning platform which supports the Bachelor and Master studies, both face-to-face and blended. This new feature, called "Activity Stream" or "wall", allows progress in the implementation of methodologies based on social learning and mobile learning within the field of university studies. The Institut de Ciències de la Educació (Education Sciences Institute - ICE) leads the educational aims of the platform, and UPCnet -UPC’s ICT services company- offers the service and carries out the technical evolution projects of the platform (change of versions, development of new features, ...) The ICE, teachers at UPC and UPCnet, through working groups and projects in ATENEA Teaching Innovation LABs, evolve and test the new features of the platform that will later incorporate to UPC’s ATENEA Service. The aim of this presentation is to explain the pedagogical motivation of the initiative, the feature’s design process, the technological development done and the result of the actual experience carried out between February and June 2012 within the framework of the official engineering studies taught at the Escola d'Enginyeria de Telecomunicació i Aeronàutica in Castelldefels (EETAC).Preprin

Profile of the participants in a STEAM lecturer-training program based on competencies. Lessons for the future

    Get PDF
This paper presents the results of a research study on the profile of the participants in a postgraduate lecturer training program (15 ECTS) based on competencies in a STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics) University. The study research questions are: (1) "In which competences do the participants perceive a personal improvement during the programme?", and (2) "Can we identify a profile of the candidates most suited to take better advantage of the training?" . The study includes current participants and students who have completed the program in the last 5 years. A mixed research methodology was used including both quantitative and qualitative analysis. Data from the program alumni and current candidates have been quantitatively analyzed to identify common personal and background features among them. Structured interviews and focus groups have been conducted to find out how their initial expectations matched with their perception of what was offered in the program. The qualitative interviews include a discussion about their experiences along the programme and their ambitions for their further professional development, and put in context with their specific background. This research has important implications for the future, such as the need for increased training in digital skills. The majority of the teachers surveyed have a positive impression of the training and are in the middle of their careers. However, because of the pressure to satisfy other Academia requirements, many potential applicants in their early career stages do not complete or even contemplate participating in the programObjectius de Desenvolupament Sostenible::4 - Educació de QualitatPostprint (published version

The effect of the Covid-19 epidemic on the self-perception of training needs in STEAM lecturers

    Get PDF
This work in progress research-to-practice paper presents the initial results of a study carried out at our university among lecturers, aimed at determining how the perception of training needs have changed due to the pandemic, and if this change can be used to increase enrollment in the university training program. Pedagogical training of university lecturers has usually been a self-training process guided by their own beliefs about what good teaching is, and the self-perception of one’s own strengths and weaknesses with respect to teaching. The COVID-19 pandemic shook the world in many ways, but it also challenged lecturers about their own convictions regarding educational methodologies, evaluation and their own approach to teaching, so it is a great opportunity for change.Peer ReviewedObjectius de Desenvolupament Sostenible::4 - Educació de QualitatPostprint (author's final draft
