    Collecting 21st-Century Science, Technology and Medicine in Scotland

    On 6 June 2017 a group of museum professionals with shared interests in contemporary collecting science, technology and medicine assembled at the National Museum of Scotland to share best practice and lessons learned in this area. After presentations from some of those involved in Scottish collections, different perspectives were provided (UK-wide, from learning, and from another discipline).The workshop concluded with a roundtable discussion during which all participants reflect on the strengths and weaknesses of the sector. This report includes summaries and commentaries of the presentations and a round-up of the discussion

    Historians are acutely aware of the role of art in medicine. Elaborate early modern works catch our eye; technical innovations attract analysis. This paper beats a different path by examining three little-known artists in early twentieth-century Britain who deployed what may seem like an outdated method: drawing. Locating the function of pencil and ink illustrations across a range of sites, we take a journey from the exterior of the living patient via invasive surgical operations to the bodily interior.     Expectation Maximization in Deep Probabilistic Logic Programming

    Probabilistic Logic Programming (PLP) combines logic and probability for representing and reasoning over domains with uncertainty. Hierarchical probability Logic Programming (HPLP) is a recent language of PLP whose clauses are hierarchically organized forming a deep neural network or arithmetic circuit. Inference in HPLP is done by circuit evaluation and learning is therefore cheaper than any generic PLP language. We present in this paper an Expectation Maximization algorithm, called Expectation Maximization Parameter learning for HIerarchical Probabilistic Logic programs (EMPHIL), for learning HPLP parameters. The algorithm converts an arithmetic circuit into a Bayesian network and performs the belief propagation algorithm over the corresponding factor graph

    Range expansion with mutation and selection: dynamical phase transition in a two-species Eden model

    The colonization of unoccupied territory by invading species, known as range expansion, is a spatially heterogeneous non-equilibrium growth process. We introduce a two-species Eden growth model to analyze the interplay between uni-directional (irreversible) mutations and selection at the expanding front. While the evolutionary dynamics leads to coalescence of both wild-type and mutant clusters, the non-homogeneous advance of the colony results in a rough front. We show that roughening and domain dynamics are strongly coupled, resulting in qualitatively altered bulk and front properties. For beneficial mutations the front is quickly taken over by mutants and growth proceeds Eden-like. In contrast, if mutants grow slower than wild-types, there is an antagonism between selection pressure against mutants and growth by the merging of mutant domains with an ensuing absorbing state phase transition to an all-mutant front. We find that surface roughening has a marked effect on the critical properties of the absorbing state phase transition. While reference models, which keep the expanding front flat, exhibit directed percolation critical behavior, the exponents of the two-species Eden model strongly deviate from it. In turn, the mutation-selection process induces an increased surface roughness with exponents distinct from that of the classical Eden model

    Antinuclear antibodies (ANA) in chronic hepatitis C virus infection: correlates of positivity and clinical relevance.

    We examined correlates of antinuclear antibody (ANA) positivity (ANA+) in individuals with chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection and the effect of positivity on clinical outcome of HCV. Pretreatment sera from 645 patients from three centres in Sweden (n = 225), the UK (n = 207) and Italy (n = 213) were evaluated by indirect immunofluorescence on Hep-2 cells for ANA pattern and titre by a single laboratory. Liver biopsies were all scored by one pathologist. A total of 258 patients were subsequently treated with interferon monotherapy. There was a significant difference in the prevalence of ANA (1:40) by geographic location: Lund 4.4%, London 8.7%, Padova 10.3% [odds ratio (OR) = 0.66; 95% CI: 0.46-0.94; P = 0.023]. Duration of HCV infection, age at infection, current age, route of infection, viral genotype, alcohol consumption, fibrosis stage and inflammatory score were not correlated with ANA+ or ANA pattern. Female gender was correlated with ANA+ and this association persisted in multivariable analyses (OR = 3.0; P = 0.002). Increased plasma cells were observed in the liver biopsies of ANA-positive individuals compared with ANA-negative individuals, while a trend towards decreased lymphoid aggregates was observed [hazard ratio (HR) = 9.0, P = 0.037; HR = 0.291, P = 0.118, respectively]. No correlations were observed between ANA positivity and nonresponse to therapy (OR = 1.4; P = 0.513), although ANA+ was correlated with faster rates of liver fibrosis, this was not statistically significant (OR = 1.8; P = 0.1452). Low titre ANA+ should not be a contraindication for interferon treatment. Our observation of increased plasma cells in ANA+ biopsies might suggest B-cell polyclonal activity with a secondary clinical manifestation of increased serum immunoglobulins

    Fission Yeast Does Not Age under Favorable Conditions, but Does So after Stress

    SummaryBackgroundMany unicellular organisms age: as time passes, they divide more slowly and ultimately die. In budding yeast, asymmetric segregation of cellular damage results in aging mother cells and rejuvenated daughters. We hypothesize that the organisms in which this asymmetry is lacking, or can be modulated, may not undergo aging.ResultsWe performed a complete pedigree analysis of microcolonies of the fission yeast Schizosaccharomyces pombe growing from a single cell. When cells were grown under favorable conditions, none of the lineages exhibited aging, which is defined as a consecutive increase in division time and increased death probability. Under favorable conditions, few cells died, and their death was random and sudden rather than following a gradual increase in division time. Cell death correlated with the inheritance of Hsp104-associated protein aggregates. After stress, the cells that inherited large aggregates aged, showing a consecutive increase in division time and an increased death probability. Their sisters, who inherited little or no aggregates, did not age.ConclusionsWe conclude that S. pombe does not age under favorable growth conditions, but does so under stress. This transition appears to be passive rather than active and results from the formation of a single large aggregate, which segregates asymmetrically at the subsequent cell division. We argue that this damage-induced asymmetric segregation has evolved to sacrifice some cells so that others may survive unscathed after severe environmental stresses

    Nutrient and herbivore alterations cause uncoupled changes in producer diversity, biomass and ecosystem function, but not in overall multifunctionality

    Altered nutrient cycles and consumer populations are among the top anthropogenic influences on ecosystems. However, studies on the simultaneous impacts of human-driven environmental alterations on ecosystem functions, and the overall change in system multifunctionality are scarce. We used estuarine tidal flats to study the effects of changes in herbivore density and nutrient availability on benthic microalgae (diversity, abundance and biomass) and ecosystem functions (N2-fixation, denitrification, extracellular polymeric substances -EPS- as a proxy for sediment cohesiveness, sediment water content as a proxy of water retention capacity and sediment organic matter). We found consistent strong impacts of modified herbivory and weak effects of increased nutrient availability on the abundance, biomass and diversity of benthic microalgae. However, the effects on specific ecosystem functions were disparate. Some functions were independently affected by nutrient addition (N2-fixation), modified herbivory (sediment organic matter and water content), or their interaction (denitrification), while others were not affected (EPS). Overall system multifunction remained invariant despite changes in specific functions. This study reveals that anthropogenic pressures can induce decoupled effects between community structure and specific ecosystem functions.     Multimode calculation of frequency tunable gyrotrons for dynamic nuclear polarization applications

    Multimode calculations of a low-power (above 10W) high-frequency (200 GHz -300 GHz) gyrotron for NMR (nuclear magnetic resonance) spectroscopy applications have been performed. Six transverse modes (TE-7, 2; TE7, 2; TE-4, 3; TE4, 3; TE-2, 4; TE2, 4) whose coupling factors are above 30% and most probably excited in the cavity were included into the calculation. The frequency fine tuning was obtained via the excitation of a sequence of longitudinal modes of TE-7, 2, q by varying the beam voltage from 15kV upward and the magnetic field from 9.6T to 9.77T. The diffractive quality factor of the cavity equals to 9965 and the ohmic quality factor of the cavity equals to 6414. The results show that the main mode TE-7, 2 is quite stable against the possible transverse mode competitors within this magnetic field range and a continuous frequency tuning range more than 800MHz (263.43 GHz - 264.28 GHz) has been achieved with alpha equaling 1.3, the beam radius and current being 1.33 and 100mA respectively
