    A Formal, Resource Consumption-Preserving Translation of Actors to Haskell

    We present a formal translation of an actor-based language with cooperative scheduling to the functional language Haskell. The translation is proven correct with respect to a formal semantics of the source language and a high-level operational semantics of the target, i.e. a subset of Haskell. The main correctness theorem is expressed in terms of a simulation relation between the operational semantics of actor programs and their translation.     Violation of the isotropic-ā„“\ell approximation in overdoped La_{2-x}Sr_xCuO_4

    Magnetotransport measurements on the overdoped cuprate La_{1.7}Sr_{0.3}CuO_4 are fitted using the Ong construction and band parameters inferred from angle-resolved photoemission. Within a band picture, the low temperature Hall data can only be fitted satisfactorily by invoking strong basal-plane anisotropy in the mean-free-path ā„“\ell. This violation of the isotropic-ā„“\ell approximation supports a picture of dominant small-angle elastic scattering in cuprates due to out-of-plane substitutional disorder. We show that both band anisotropy and anisotropy in the elastic scattering channel strongly renormalize the Hall coefficient in overdoped La_{2-x}Sr_xCuO_4 over a wide doping and temperature range.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure

    A Geometrical Test of the Cosmological Energy Contents Using the Lyman-alpha Forest

    In this Letter we explore a version of the test of cosmological geometry proposed by Alcock and Paczynski (1979), using observations of the Lyman-alpha forest in the spectra of close quasar pairs. By comparing the correlations in absorption in one quasar spectrum with correlations between the spectra of neighboring quasars one can determine the relation of the redshift distance scale to the angle distance scale at the redshift of the absorbers, zāˆ¼2āˆ’4z \sim 2 - 4. Since this relationship depends on the parameters of the cosmological model, these parameters may be determined using the Lyman-alpha forest. While this test is relatively insensitive to the density parameter Ī©m\Omega_m in a dust-dominated universe, it is more sensitive to the presence of a matter component with large negative pressure (such as a cosmological constant Ī›\Lambda) and its equation of state. With only 25 pairs of quasar spectra at angular separations 0.5ā€²āˆ’2ā€²0.5' - 2', one can discriminate between an Ī©m=0.3\Omega_m = 0.3 open universe (Ī›=0\Lambda=0) and an Ī©m=0.3\Omega_m = 0.3 flat (Ī›\Lambda-dominated) universe at the 4āˆ’Ļƒ4-\sigma level. The S/N can be enhanced by considering quasar pairs at smaller angular separations, but requires proper modeling of nonlinear redshift space distortions.     Amortised resource analysis with separation logic

    Type-based amortised resource analysis following Hofmann and Jostā€”where resources are associated with individual elements of data structures and doled out to the programmer under a linear typing disciplineā€”have been successful in providing concrete resource bounds for functional programs, with good support for inference. In this work we translate the idea of amortised resource analysis to imperative languages by embedding a logic of resources, based on Bunched Implications, within Separation Logic. The Separation Logic component allows us to assert the presence and shape of mutable data structures on the heap, while the resource component allows us to state the resources associated with each member of the structure. We present the logic on a small imperative language with procedures and mutable heap, based on Java bytecode. We have formalised the logic within the Coq proof assistant and extracted a certified verification condition generator. We demonstrate the logic on some examples, including proving termination of in-place list reversal on lists with cyclic tails

    An X-ray measurement of Titan's atmospheric extent from its transit of the Crab Nebula

    Saturn's largest satellite, Titan, transited the Crab Nebula on 5 January 2003. We observed this astronomical event with the {\it Chandra} X-ray Observatory. An ``occultation shadow'' has clearly been detected and is found to be larger than the diameter of Titan's solid surface. The difference gives a thickness for Titan's atmosphere of 880 Ā±\pm 60 km. This is the first measurement of Titan's atmospheric extent at X-ray wavelengths. The value measured is consistent with or slightly larger than those estimated from earlier Voyager observations at other wavelengths.     The International Trade Network

    Bilateral trade relationships in the international level between pairs of countries in the world give rise to the notion of the International Trade Network (ITN). This network has attracted the attention of network researchers as it serves as an excellent example of the weighted networks, the link weight being defined as a measure of the volume of trade between two countries. In this paper we analyzed the international trade data for 53 years and studied in detail the variations of different network related quantities associated with the ITN. Our observation is that the ITN has also a scale invariant structure like many other real-world networks.Comment: 9 pages, 7 figure

    Improving Students' Ability in Comprehending a Descriptive Text Through Cooperative Scripts

    This research is intended to answer the problem in what way does the cooperative script improve the students' ability in comprehending a descriptive text to the eleventh grade students of SMKS Pembangunan Rasau Jaya in the academic year 2014/2015. This research is classroom action research. The tools of data collection used written test, field note and observation checklist. On the first cycle the researcher used cooperative script to improve the students' ability in comprehending on information of descriptive text about animal. The result of this research showed that the students ability in comprehending a descriptive text improved after applied the cooperative script. With this activity, students had more practice in reading. Besides, during the reading process students were active in asked and answered questions, this method also guide students to summarize the information of the passage. Consequently, the method successfully improved the students' ability in reading comprehension of descriptive text

    Dynamical and spectral properties of complex networks

    Dynamical properties of complex networks are related to the spectral properties of the Laplacian matrix that describes the pattern of connectivity of the network. In particular we compute the synchronization time for different types of networks and different dynamics. We show that the main dependence of the synchronization time is on the smallest nonzero eigenvalue of the Laplacian matrix, in contrast to other proposals in terms of the spectrum of the adjacency matrix.     Evaluation of the efficacy of soil flushing remediation method on crude oil-spilled mangrove sediment at Bodo Creek, Gokana, Nigeria

    The efficacy of soil flushing remediation method of a crude oil spilled mangrove sediment at Bodo creek, Bodo, Nigeria was evaluated. Field observation revealed that after soil flushing remediation operation of the Bodo crude oil-spilled site in 2018 by Shell Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria, no post-remediation assessment was carried out to determine the effectiveness of the technique as a remediation strategy. This study was carried out to ascertain the effectiveness of soil flushing remediation method for decontamination of hydrocarbon-spilled mangrove environment. Sediment samples were collected from 3 stations within the creek which were non-remediated crude oil-polluted station, soil flushing remediated station and non-polluted station, at depths of 0 ā€“ 15 cm and analysed for sediment temperature, pH, conductivity, Total Petroleum Hydrocarbon (TPH), Total Hydrocarbon Content (THC) and microbial properties. Results showed significant decrease in TPH and THC (1241.71 mg/kg and 1755.45 mg/kg, respectively) in the soil flushing remediated station when compared with non-remediated polluted station (1792.93 mg/kg and 28261.5 mg/kg, respectively). Despite the significant decrease in THC and TPH in the soil flushing station, the values were still above environmentally permissible limits. This implies that other remediation techniques should be adopted after the soil flushing approach
