Quality assurance in transnational higher education : a case study of the tropEd network
Transnational or cross-border higher education has rapidly expanded since the 1980s. Together with that expansion issues on quality assurance came to the forefront. This article aims to identify key issues regarding quality assurance of transnational higher education and discusses the quality assurance of the tropEd Network for International Health in Higher Education in relation to these key issues.; Literature review and review of documents.; From the literature the following key issues regarding transnational quality assurance were identified and explored: comparability of quality assurance frameworks, true collaboration versus erosion of national education sovereignty, accreditation agencies and transparency. The tropEd network developed a transnational quality assurance framework for the network. The network accredits modules through a rigorous process which has been accepted by major stakeholders. This process was a participatory learning process and at the same time the process worked positive for the relations between the institutions.; The development of the quality assurance framework and the process provides a potential example for others
X-ray Localization of the Globular Cluster G1 with XMM-Newton
We present an accurate X-ray position of the massive globular cluster G1 by
using XMM-Newton and the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). The X-ray emission of G1
has been detected recently with XMM-Newton. There are two possibilities for the
origin of the X-ray emission. It can be either due to accretion of the central
intermediate-mass black hole, or by ordinary low-mass X-ray binaries. The
precise location of the X-ray emission might distinguish between these two
scenarios. By refining the astrometry of the XMM-Newton and HST data, we
reduced the XMM-Newton error circle to 1.5". Despite the smaller error circle,
the precision is not sufficient to distinguish an intermediate-mass black hole
and luminous low-mass X-ray binaries. This result, however, suggests that

The Stellar Populations of NGC 3109: Another Dwarf Irregular Galaxy with a Population II Stellar Halo
We have obtained V and I-band photometry for about 17500 stars in the field
of the dwarf irregular galaxy NGC3109, located in the outskirts of the Local
Group. The photometry allows us to study the stellar populations present inside
and outside the disk of this galaxy. From the VI color-magnitude diagram we
infer metallicities and ages for the stellar populations in the main body and
in the halo of NGC3109. The stars in the disk of this galaxy have a wide
variety of ages, including very young stars with approximately 10^7 yr. Our
main result is to establish the presence of a halo consisting of population II
stars, extending out to about 4.5 arcmin (or 1.8 kpc) above and below the plane
of this galaxy. For these old stars we derive an age of > 10 Gyr and a
metallicity of [Fe/H] = -1.8 +/- 0.2. We construct a deep luminosity function,
obtaining an accurate distance modulus (m-M)_0 = 25.62 +/- 0.1 for this galaxy
based on the I-magnitude of the red giant branch (RGB) tip and adopting E(V-I)

Estimating age of spotted and spinner dolphins (Stenella attenuata and Stenella longirostris) from teeth
This paper is an account of preparation and examination techniques and criteria used to estimate age in decalcified and stained tooth thin sections from spinner and spotted dolphins. A dentinal growth layer group (GLG),
composed of two thin light and two thicker dark-stained layers, is deposited annually. The GLG component layers are variably visible, but the "ideal" pattern and successive thinning of dentinal GLGs are used as a guide to determine GLG limits. Age-specific thicknesses of dentinal GLGs found in Hawaiian spinner dolphin teeth seem to be applicable to teeth of spotted dolphins and can be used as an aid in locating GLG boundaries. Cementa1 GLGs are composed of a dark-stained and alightly stained layer and usually are
deposited at a rate of one per year, but may be deposited every other year or two or three times per year. Two slightly different methods of counting dentinal GLGs are presented, along with guidelines for determining whether
dentinal or cementa1 GLG counts provide the best estimate of age for a specimen. (PDF contains 23 pages.
Low-Grade Appendiceal Mucinous Neoplasm Involving the Endometrium and Presenting with Mucinous Vaginal Discharge.
Primary appendiceal mucinous lesions are uncommon and represent a spectrum from nonneoplastic mucous retention cysts to invasive adenocarcinoma. Low-grade appendiceal mucinous neoplasms (LAMNs) represent an intermediate category on this spectrum and can be classified according to whether or not they are confined to the appendix. Although LAMNs are frequently confined to the appendix, they can also spread to the peritoneum and clinically progress as pseudomyxoma peritonei (i.e., mucinous ascites). Thus, the appropriate classification of appendiceal primary neoplasia is essential for prognosis and influences clinical management. In addition, the precise classification, management, and clinical outcome of patients with disseminated peritoneal disease remain controversial. Here, we report an unusual case of LAMN with pseudomyxoma peritonei that initially presented with mucinous and bloody vaginal discharge. Pathological evaluation revealed low-grade appendiceal mucinous neoplasm with secondary involvement of the peritoneum, ovaries, and endometrial surface. Therefore, LAMN should be considered in the differential diagnosis of mucinous vaginal discharge
Pseudo-K\"ahler Lie algebras with abelian complex structures
We study Lie algebras endowed with an abelian complex structure which admit a
symplectic form compatible with the complex structure. We prove that each of
those Lie algebras is completely determined by a pair (U,H) where U is a
complex commutative associative algebra and H is a sesquilinear hermitian form
on U which verifies certain compatibility conditions with respect to the
associative product on U. The Riemannian and Ricci curvatures of the associated
pseudo-K\"ahler metric are studied and a characterization of those Lie algebras
which are Einstein but not Ricci flat is given. It is seen that all
pseudo-K\"ahler Lie algebras can be inductively described by a certain method
of double extensions applied to the associated complex asssociative commutative
algebras
