    Vaccination against Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae as an alternative strategy to antimicrobial use in Danish pig herds

    In this study the objective was to determine whether use of vaccination against Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae (APP) had an effect on the antimicrobial consumption in finisher pigs, when compared to herds without vaccination. Based on observational data, we found that the change in antimicrobial consumption after vaccination was initiated was significant associated with the baseline antimicrobial use before vaccination. The decrease in antimicrobial used was more pronounced in vaccinated herds (N=101) when compared to herds without vaccination (N=320), indicating an effect of vaccination against APP on the antimicrobial consumption level

    We introduce a calculus for tuplices, which are expressions that generalize matrices and vectors. Tuplices have an underlying data type for quantities that are taken from a zero-totalized field. We start with the core tuplix calculus CTC for entries and tests, which are combined using conjunctive composition. We define a standard model and prove that CTC is relatively complete with respect to it. The core calculus is extended with operators for choice, information hiding, scalar multiplication, clearing and encapsulation. We provide two examples of applications; one on incremental financial budgeting, and one on modular financial budget design.Comment: 22 page

    Assessment of the impact of omitting palpation of the lungs and the liver at meat inspection

    Meat inspection of finisher pigs is gradually moving from traditional inspection involving palpation and incisions to a more visual inspection. However, what do we miss if we no longer palpate and incise? This is addressed in this paper which focuses specifically on palpation of the lungs and the liver. A risk assessment following international guidelines was undertaken. The assessment shows that omission of these routine palpations on finisher pigs from controlled housing (i.e. herds with high biosecurity) will have no significant impact on food safety.     Taenia saginata cysticercus is the larval stage of the zoonotic parasite Taenia saginata, with a life-cycle involving both cattle and humans. The public health impact is considered low. The current surveillance system, based on post-mortem inspection of carcasses has low sensitivity and leads to considerable economic burden. Therefore, in the interests of public health and food production efficiency, this study aims to explore the potential of risk-based and cost-effective meat inspection activities for the detection and control of T. saginata cysticercus in low prevalence settings

    Quantum teleportation from a telecom-wavelength photon to a solid-state quantum memory

    In quantum teleportation, the state of a single quantum system is disembodied into classical information and purely quantum correlations, to be later reconstructed onto a second system that has never directly interacted with the first one. This counterintuitive phenomenon is a cornerstone of quantum information science due to its essential role in several important tasks such as the long-distance transmission of quantum information using quantum repeaters. In this context, a challenge of paramount importance is the distribution of entanglement between remote nodes, and to use this entanglement as a resource for long-distance light-to-matter quantum teleportation. Here we demonstrate quantum teleportation of the polarization state of a telecom-wavelength photon onto the state of a solid-state quantum memory. Entanglement is established between a rare-earth-ion doped crystal storing a single photon that is polarization-entangled with a flying telecom-wavelength photon. The latter is jointly measured with another flying qubit carrying the polarization state to be teleported, which heralds the teleportation. The fidelity of the polarization state of the photon retrieved from the memory is shown to be greater than the maximum fidelity achievable without entanglement, even when the combined distances travelled by the two flying qubits is 25 km of standard optical fibre. This light-to-matter teleportation channel paves the way towards long-distance implementations of quantum networks with solid-state quantum memories.Comment: 5 pages (main text) + appendix (10 pages
