Acute fatty liver of pregnancy is an uncommon, potentially fatal disorder that usually occurs in the third trimester of pregnancy or in the early post partum. We present here a 30-year-old Nigerian primigravida with acute fatty liver of pregnancy. She was successfully managed and discharged. Keywords: Acute fatty liver of pregnancy. The successive colonization of fermenting African locust beans (Parkia biglobosa) by lactic acid bacteria (LAB) was investigated for seven days. The LAB isolated were Pediococcus pentosaceus, Lactobacillus raffinolactus, Leuconostoc mesenteroides, Leuconostoc sp, Pediococcus halophilus,Pediococcus sp, Lactobacillus sp, Lactobacillus plantarum, Lactobacillus acidophilus and Lactobacillus brevis. The first dominant species were P. pentosaceus, which was more in abundance, L. raffinolactus, L. mesenteroides and another Leuconostoc sp. At the end of fermentation, a stable community comprising of P. halophilus, P. pentasaceus and L. brevis was formed. The dominant genera in this study were Lactobacillus and Pediococcus. The proximate analysis of the fermenting andfermented mash showed an increase in moisture content from 55.1 to 65.2%, pH from 6.25 to a stable alkaline value of 8.4. The reducing sugar however, decreased from 0.96 to 0.58 mg. The amino acid content increased from an initial value of 8.13 to 35.55 mg for the laboratory-scale product, whereas the value of the control was 13.4 mg. The total viable count increased from an initial value of log102.6 to log105.8 and then fell to a final value of log104.1. The enterococci count increased initially but eventually fell to zero. The total yeast count increased initially from log105.3 to log106.6 and thereafter fell to zero. The market sample had a value of log101.5. No coliforms were found in the course of fermentation as well as in the final product of the laboratory-scale experiment and the market sample

The evaluation of intranasal Lactobacillus fermentum and Mannheimia haemolytica bacterine in the control of Mannheimia haemolytica infection in grasscutter (Thryonomys swinderianus temminck, 1827)

This study evaluates the effect of recombinant Mannheimia hemolytica bacterine and Lactobacillus fermentum intranasal administration on experimental pneumonic Mannheimiosis in grasscutters (Thryonomys swinderianus Temminck, 1827). This investigation involved apparently healthy adult grasscutters that were divided into groups A, B, C, D, E, F, G and H of three (3) grasscutters each with group H serving as the control. Group A (vaccinated twice with bacterin and infected), group B (vaccinated once with bacterin and infected), group C, E (vaccinated, inoculated with Lactobacillus fermentum and infected), group D (inoculated with Lactobacillus fermentum alone), group F (infected), group G (grasscutters infected and later inoculated with Lactobacillus fermentum) and lastly group H (control). The mortality pattern, pathology of the respiratory tract and nasal bacterial load were assessed using standard methods. The result showed that intranasal application of Lactobacillus fermentum and or recombinant Mannheimia haemolytica bacterine reduces the nasal bacterial load, pathology and mortality pattern associated with experimental Mannheimia haemolytica infection in the grasscutter hence they could be useful in the control of respiratory disorders in grasscutters. Keywords: grasscutter, bacterin, experimental, respiratory, infectio

Background: Work and family are very important aspects of life, and for medical doctors, workplace stress may be inevitable during residency training. Resident doctors should have a balanced work-family life because it contributes to their overall family functioning. Objectives: The specific objectives were to determine the prevalence of workplace stress, evaluate the family functioning, and assess the influence of workplace stress on the family functioning of the resident doctors working in the University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan, Nigeria.Setting: The study was conducted at the University College Hospital, Ibadan located at the south-western part of Nigeria. Methods: The study was a cross-sectional study, conducted among resident doctors across all the specialties at UCH, Ibadan over a period of 3 months. Two hundred and thirty-two eligible and consenting resident doctors were selected by stratified random sampling and data was collected using a structured self-administered questionnaire. Data was analyzed using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) version 23.Results: The prevalence of workplace stress among the resident doctors was 62.1%, and 27.6% had problematic family functioning. There was a significant association between workplace stress and the family functioning of the resident doctors. Workplace stress could independently predict problematic family functioning of the resident doctors. Conclusion: Workplace stress should not be underestimated, as it has significant influence on the family functioning of the residentdoctors working at the UCH, Ibadan, Nigeria. Grasscutter meat is an important source of animal protein in many West African countries. Despite the obvious potential of the grasscutter towards protein availability, attempts towards domestication have been hampered by diseases of which pneumonic conditions are of extreme importance. This study evaluates the normal nasal microflora of apparently healthy grasscutter with a view of understanding the nasal bacterial flora dynamics in health. Sixteen healthy adult grasscutters were examined for nasal normal microflora using the culture method. The disc diffusion technique was used for the antibiotic sensitivity test. The following microorganisms were identified from the normal flora of the grasscutters, they are; Staphylococcus epidermidis, Staphylococcus aureus, Enterococcus sp, Micrococcus sp, Bacillus cerus , E. coli, Serratia sp, Streptococcus sp, Pasteurella multocida, Streptacoccus, sp., Mannheimia heamolytica, Klebsiella sp., Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus sp. and Proteus sp. There was no significant sex variation in the populations of the nasal normal microflora. Most of the bacteria were found to be susceptible to cloxacillin, ceftrazone, cefunoxime, ciprofloxacin and gentamycin, while they were resistant to ceflazidime, ampicillin, erythromycin, co-trimazole augmentin and nitrofurentoin. The findings provided the basis for the understanding of normal nasal bacterial flora and the possibility of their involvement in pneumopathies associated with this animal model and it will provided basis for the use of appropriate antibiotics to combat respiratory infections in grasscutter in captivity. Keywords: nasal, microflora, grasscutter, domesticate, pneumopathie

Research on Social Media User Suicide Influencing Factors, Active Recognition and Intervention

No full text
With the development of Internet, more and more people express their own feeling on the social media, including suicide declaration, which create new opportunity for the identifying, preventing and intervening of suicide high risk group. The influencing factors of suicide behavior are numerous, mainly including internal and external factors. Internal factors include biological factors, mental disorders and psychological factors; external factors include negative life events, family factors, social environment factors and cultural factors. Systematic intervention of Internet is used to establish an automatic identification and assessment of suicide ideation in social media, and a mental psychotherapy with many other psychotherapies. Through timely intervention and referral, systematic intervention and continuous care intervention process, social media users can eliminate suicide idea and reduce suicide probability. At present, researchers pay more attention to the development process and mechanism of suicidal behavior. In the future, it will be necessary to establish Internet suicide intervention system and study the effect of different psychological intervention on Internet suicide. © 2019, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.</p
