On cubic multisections of Eisenstein series

    Get PDF
A systematic procedure for generating cubic multisections of Eisenstein series is given. The relevant series are determined from Fourier expansions for Eisenstein series by restricting the congruence class of the summation index modulo three. We prove that the resulting series are rational functions of \eta(\tau) and \eta(3\tau), where \eta is the Dedekind eta function. A more general treatment of cubic dissection formulas is given by describing the dissection operators in terms of linear transformations. These operators exhibit properties that mirror those of similarly defined quintic operators

The Impact of Minimum Wages on Wages, Work and Poverty in Nicaragua

We use an individual-level panel data set to study the impact of changes in legal minimum wages on a host of labor market outcomes in Nicaragua including: a) wages and employment, b) transitions of workers across jobs (in the covered and uncovered sectors) and employment status (unemployment and out of the labor force), and c) transitions into and out of poverty. We find that changes in the legal minimum wage affect only those workers whose initial wage (before the change in minimum wages) is close to the minimum. For example, increases in the legal minimum wage lead to significant increases in the wages and decreases in employment of private covered sector workers who have wages within 20% of the minimum wage before the change, but have no significant impact on wages in other parts of the distribution. The estimates from the employment transition equations suggest that the decrease in covered private sector employment is due to a combination of layoffs and reductions in hiring. Most workers who lose their jobs in the covered private sector as a result of higher legal minimum wages leave the labor force or go into unpaid family work; a smaller proportion find work in the public sector. Our analysis of the relationship between the minimum wage and household income finds: a) increases in legal minimum wages increase the probability that a poor worker's family will move out of poverty, and b) increases in legal minimum wages are more likely to reduce the incidence of poverty if they impact the head of the household rather than the non-head.poverty, minimum wages, employment

Engage, Encourage, & Empower: Shining Light on the Resources Available to Youth

Throughout the duration of this project, the internship was conducted at The Epicenter in Salinas, CA. They are a drop in resource center for marginalized youth ages 16-24. The problem being addressed is youth having low community involvement. In broader terms, the issue at hand is youth not engaging in their community and gaining valuable mentorship/knowledge. The causes of having low community involvement for youth include poverty and not having the knowledge of the opportunities that exist in surrounding areas. The consequences that occur when youth do not get involved in their community, range from “brain drain,” which is where youth seek opportunities elsewhere, due to the lack of opportunities they believe are in their own city. Not being involved also has a consequence of leading to self doubt and believing that they can not make it elsewhere. To address this issue, a resource fair was planned to conduct a showcasing of possible opportunities that are available. The resource fair was set to showcase possible art and education resources for youth. This way they could begin developing a connection face to face versus something that could be conducted online. The resource fair also allowed more incentives to be included, in order to reach more youth to participate the day of. Due to a worldwide pandemic, known as COVID-19, a shelter in place order was set in place. This made it where the original event was cancelled, however The Epicenter was left with a resource guide to eventually post on their website. It has been recommended to the center to eventually host their own resource fair while also including more partnerships with the building healthy communities campaign

A Conjecture on the Irregularity Function for Local Geometric Langlands Parameters and the Formal Frenkel-Gross Connection

For a simple complex algebraic group GG, M. Kamgarpour and D. Sage have shown that the adjoint irregularity of an irregular singular flat GG-bundle on the formal punctured disc is bounded from below by the rank of GG, moreover the rank is realized by the formal Frenkel-Gross connection. This is a geometric analog of a conjecture of Gross and Reeder on the swan conductor of arithmetic local Langlands parameters. In this work, we explore an interesting combinatorial problem which arises when trying to consider the minimal value of the irregularity function with respect to an arbitrary representation of GG
