    The effects of external focus of attention on standing triple jump performance.

    The purpose of the study is to determine if the use of external focus of attention has an effect on standing triple jump performance. External focus is where a subject focuses on an object or a focal point outside of themselves when performing a task. Nineteen female athletes from a university were recruited for the study. Testing consisted of 9 standing triple jumps. Each subject performed three practice jumps and three tests jumps under an external focus condition and a control condition. The variables measured were horizontal body displacement in meters, and horizontal ground reaction force (HGRF) and vertical ground reaction force (VGRF) in newtons from the initial take-off jump. A cone was used as a focal point during the external focus condition. Paired sampled t-tests were used to find a difference in jump distance and GRF between the two conditions. Non-significant results with a p value greater than the Bonferoni adjusted values of .0167 were seen in jump distance (p = .142) with a mean difference of -0.094 meters favoring the external focus condition, HGRF (p = .363) with a mean difference of 6.469 newtons favoring the control condition, and VGRF (p = .753) with a mean difference of 23.589 newtons favoring the control condition. It was seen that an external focus of attention does not have an effect on standing triple jump performance

    Preliminary Evaluation of the Group Teen Triple P Program for Parents of Teenagers Making the Transition to High School

    Group Teen Triple P is a brief group parenting program for parents of teenagers. It is based on the successful Triple P – Positive Parenting Program for parents of children aged from 0 to 12, with a focus on helping parents manage the transition from late childhood to early adolescence. This paper describes the initial evaluation of a universal trial of the program offered to all parents of students entering their first year of high school at age 12 in a regional north Queensland school. Twenty-seven parents completed a battery of self-report questionnaires immediately before and after participating in the 8-week program. Participating parents reported significant reductions in conflict with their teenager, and on measures of laxness, over-reactivity, and disagreements with their partner over parenting issues. These are well-established parenting risk factors. In addition, parents reported significant improvements on measures of self-regulation, including self-efficacy, selfsufficiency, and self-management, and reductions on measures of depression, anxiety, and stress. It was concluded that a preliminary evaluation of the Group Teen Triple P program achieved its goals of reducing targeted risk factors associated with the development of behavioural and emotional problems in teenagers. The paper concludes with an examination of issues around parent recruitment and engagement which are crucial for the successful provision of effective and timely advice and support for parents of teenagers

    Star Formation in QSO Host Galaxies

    Many of the conditions that are necessary for starbursts appear to be important in the triggering of QSOs. However, it is still debatable whether starbursts are ubiquitously present in galaxies harboring QSOs. In this paper we review our current knowledge from observations of the role of starbursts in different types of QSOs. Post-starburst stellar populations are potentially present in the majority of QSO hosts. QSOs with far-infrared colors similar to those of ultraluminous infrared galaxies invariably reside in merging galaxies that have interaction-induced starbursts of a few hundred Myr or less. Similar, but dramatically more luminous post-starburst populations are found in the recently discovered class of QSOs known as post-starburst QSOs, or Q+A's. Both of these classes, however, comprise only a small fraction (10-15%) of the total QSO population. The so-called "red" QSOs generally suffer from strong extinction at optical wavelengths, making them ideal candidates for the study of hosts. Their stellar populations typically show a post-starburst component as well, though with a larger range of ages. Finally, optical "classical" QSO hosts show traces of major star formation episodes (typically involving >10% of the mass of the stellar component) in the more distant past (1-2 Gyr). These starbursts appear to be linked to past merger events.     Enhanced Feasibility Assessment of Payload Adapters for NASAs Space Launch System

    The first flight of NASAs new exploration-classlaunch vehicle, the Space Launch System (SLS), will test amyriad of systems designed to enable the next generation of deepspace human spaceflight, and launch from Kennedy SpaceCenter no earlier than December 2019. The initial Block 1configuration for EM-1 will be capable of lofting at least 70metric tons (t) of payload and send the Orion crew vehicle intoa distant retrograde lunar orbit, paving the way for future crewmissions to cislunar space and eventually Mars. A Block 1Bversion of SLS will lift at least 34 t to trans-lunar injection (TLI)in its crew configuration and at least 37 t to TLI in its cargoconfiguration no earlier than 2024. For Mars-class payloads,larger fairings and payload adapters for the Block 2 cargovehicle are under consideration. For missions beyond the Earth-Moon system, SLS offers greater characteristic energy (C3)than any other launch vehicle, enabling shorter transit times orheavier payloads with more robust science packages formissions to the outer solar system. Indeed, the unmatchedcombination of thrust, payload volume and departure energythat SLS provides opens new opportunities for human androbotic exploration of deep space
