    Fundamentals of PV Efficiency Interpreted by a Two-Level Model

    Elementary physics of photovoltaic energy conversion in a two-level atomic PV is considered. We explain the conditions for which the Carnot efficiency is reached and how it can be exceeded! The loss mechanisms - thermalization, angle entropy, and below-bandgap transmission - explain the gap between Carnot efficiency and the Shockley-Queisser limit. Wide varieties of techniques developed to reduce these losses (e.g., solar concentrators, solar-thermal, tandem cells, etc.) are reinterpreted by using a two level model. Remarkably, the simple model appears to capture the essence of PV operation and reproduce the key results and important insights that are known to the experts through complex derivations.Comment: 7 pages, 6 figure

    Thermodynamic efficiency limits of classical and bifacial multi-junction tandem solar cells: An analytical approach

    Bifacial tandem cells promise to reduce three fundamental losses (i.e., above-bandgap, below bandgap, and the uncollected light between panels) inherent in classical single junction photovoltaic (PV) systems. The successive filtering of light through the bandgapcascade and the requirement of current continuity make optimization of tandem cellsdifficult and accessible only to numerical solution through computer modeling. The challenge is even more complicated for bifacial design. In this paper, we use an elegantly simple analytical approach to show that the essential physics of optimization is intuitively obvious, and deeply insightful results can be obtained with a few lines of algebra. This powerful approach reproduces, as special cases, all of the known results of conventional and bifacial tandem cells and highlights the asymptotic efficiency gain of these technologies

    The substring inclusion constraint longest common subsequence problem can be solved in quadratic time

    AbstractIn this paper, we study some variants of the Constrained Longest Common Subsequence (CLCS) problem, namely, the substring inclusion CLCS (Substring-IC-CLCS) problem and a generalized version thereof. In the Substring-IC-CLCS problem, we are to find a longest common subsequence (LCS) of two given strings containing a third constraint string (given) as a substring. Previous solution to this problem runs in cubic time, i.e, O(nmk) time, where n,m and k are the length of the 3 input strings. In this paper, we present simple O(nm) time algorithms to solve the Substring-IC-CLCS problem. We also study the Generalized Substring-IC-LCS problem where we are given two strings of length n and m respectively and an ordered list of p strings and the goal is to find an LCS containing each of them as a substring in the order they appear in the list. We present an O(nmp) algorithm for this generalized version of the problem

    Lumbar morphometry: A study of lumbar vertebrae from a Pakistani population using computed tomography scans

    Study design: A cross-sectional study.Purpose: To describe the characteristics of lumbar vertebrae of Pakistani patients reporting at a tertiary care hospital and compare with studies from other populations.Overview of literature: Several studies have been conducted to determine morphometry of lumbar vertebrae. Most of the studies involve Caucasian populations, still data on other populations still sparse. This is the first study describing lumbar morphometry of a Pakistani population.Methods: An observational study was conducted based on a review of thin-cut (3 mm) computed topographic images of lumbar vertebrae. Two-hundred and twenty vertebrae from forty-nine patients were studied, and various dimensions were analyzed.Results: Generally, the size of the vertebrae, vertebral canals and recesses were found to be greater in male patients. The difference was statistically significant for transverse and anteroposterior diameters of the vertebral bodies and sagittal diameter of pedicles on the left side (p\u3c0.05). Comparison of populations revealed statistically significant differences in pedicle dimensions between Pakistani population and others.Conclusions: This study provides anatomical knowledge of the lumbar region in a sample population of Pakistan. There were significant differences in various dimensions of lumbar vertebrae between female and male patients. This would prove to be critical for performing a safe operation

    Acute colonic pseudo-obstruction (ACPO) or Ogilvie syndrome is a functional motility disorder of the colonic bowel without any organic or mechanical obstruction. Autonomic disturbance which is one of the underlying factors that can lead to Ogilvie syndrome, is caused by stroke. Acute colonic pseudo- obstruction (ACPO) in the setting of stroke is not often reported in medical literature. Various modalities of treatment strategies are recommended including conservative approaches, medical therapies, endoscopic and surgical procedures. We will discuss a patient suffering from a hemorrhagic stroke in the right basal ganglia that developed Acute Colonic Pseudo Obstruction and improved subsequently with conservative management
