Bioactivity of Samsum ant (Pachycondyla sennaarensis) venom against lipopolysaccharides through antioxidant and upregulation of Akt1 signaling in rats
BACKGROUND: This study aimed at investigating the oxidative stress ameliorating effect, lipids profile restoration, and the anti-inflammatory effect of Samsum Ant Venom (SAV) in induced endotoxemic male rats, injected with bacterial lipopolysaccharides (LPS). RESULTS: Results revealed that LPS significantly increased the oxidative stress indications in LPS-injected rats. A significant increase of both malondialdehyde (MDA), and advanced oxidative protein products (AOPP), as well as a significant suppression of glutathione were all detected. Treatment with 100 μg/kg dose of SAV significantly restored the oxidative stress normal indications and increased the total glutathione levels. Treatment of the LPS-rats with 100 μg/kg dose of SAV showed a clear anti-inflammatory function; as the histological architecture of the hepatic tissue was partially recovered, along with a valuable decrease in the leukocytes infiltrated the hepatic tissues. Treatment of some rat groups with 600 μg/kg dose of SAV after LPS injection induced a severe endotoxemia that resulted in very high mortality rates. SAV versus the effects of LPS on AKT1, Fas, TNF-α and IFN-γ mRNA expression. SAV was found to significantly lower Fas gene expression comparing to the LPS group and restore the level of IFN-γ mRNA expression to that of the control group. CONCLUSION: In conclusion, SAV, at the dose of 100 μg/kg body weight, maintained and restored the oxidative stability, the anti-inflammatory, and the hypolipidemic bioactivity in rats after induced disruption of these parameters by LPS injection. This improvement by SAV was mediated by upregulation of AKT1
New technique for decreasing of total harmonic distortion of three- phases bridge rectifier by using the method of harmonic injection
Bridge rectifier of three-phases is has widely applications in power systems. This rectifier consummates a wave form that has been shaped by a non-linear of the input current, though in the power system. The harmonic parts caused by such power electronic devices have critical effects on a number of aspects of power networks, particularly, on distribution. In accumulation, the value of Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) is high; it causes unwanted distortion on the sinusoidal figure of the wave for the input current. The outcomes propose a new circuit for a three-phase rectifier, making use of harmonic current injection method. The MATLAB software has been used to simulate the proposed circuit. A prototype has been developed to prove the actual results and compare them with the simulation results of the proposed circuit. The proposed circuit applies active harmonic current injection method with a capacitor bank, which, compared to conventional circuits, is not sophisticated. The model has been verified with feedback injection harmonic current to demonstrate the strength of the system. The evaluation of the simulation results and experimental outcomes from the prototype represents an unimportant difference. The proposed circuit has minimized the THD drawn from the input current supply down to 5.5%
Should outbreak response immunization be recommended for measles outbreaks in middle- and low-income countries? An update.
Measles caused mortality in >164,000 children in 2008, with most deaths occurring during outbreaks. Nonetheless, the impact and desirability of conducting measles outbreak response immunization (ORI) in middle- and low-income countries has been controversial. World Health Organization guidelines published in 1999 recommended against ORI in such settings, although recently these guidelines have been reversed for countries with measles mortality reduction goals
Determination of Important Topographic Factors for Landslide Mapping Analysis Using MLP Network
Landslide is one of the natural disasters that occur in Malaysia. Topographic factors such as elevation, slope angle, slope aspect,
general curvature, plan curvature, and profile curvature are considered as the main causes of landslides. In order to determine
the dominant topographic factors in landslide mapping analysis, a study was conducted and presented in this paper. There are
three main stages involved in this study. The first stage is the extraction of extra topographic factors. Previous landslide studies
had identified mainly six topographic factors. Seven new additional factors have been proposed in this study. They are longitude
curvature, tangential curvature, cross section curvature, surface area, diagonal line length, surface roughness, and rugosity. The
second stage is the specification of the weight of each factor using two methods. The methods are multilayer perceptron (MLP)
network classification accuracy and Zhou’s algorithm. At the third stage, the factors with higher weights were used to improve
the MLP performance. Out of the thirteen factors, eight factors were considered as important factors, which are surface area,
longitude curvature, diagonal length, slope angle, elevation, slope aspect, rugosity, and profile curvature.Theclassification accuracy
of multilayer perceptron neural network has increased by 3% after the elimination of five less important factors
Indoor air quality (IAQ) in educational institutions: a review on risks of poor IAQ, sampling strategies, and building-related health symptoms
Health and academic achievement of students from every level of education are affected by the provision of good Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) since the students spend more than 5 hours of a day in school on average. Hence, this paper discusses on issues related to IAQ studies in maintaining a healthy level in educational institution. The presence of indoor pollutants such as VOCs, CO2, and other hazardous elements were assessed in terms of its effects on students’ well-being and health. This paper also examines commonly reported health problems related to poor IAQ such as sick building syndrome (SBS) and asthma. Every measurements and consideration regarding IAQ provision comes with different techniques and strategies, which were highlighted regarding its relative importance and frequency of use by different researchers. The review suggested substitution of natural-based products for indoor cleaning agents and installation of air ventilation and purification systems for a more acceptable indoor air quality
Cytotoxicity of nickel zinc ferrite nanoparticles on cancer cells of epithelial origin
In this study, in vitro cytotoxicity of nickel zinc (NiZn) ferrite nanoparticles against human colon cancer HT29, breast cancer MCF7, and liver cancer HepG2 cells was examined. The morphology, homogeneity, and elemental composition of NiZn ferrite nanoparticles were investigated by scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, respectively. The exposure of cancer cells to NiZn ferrite nano-particles (15.6-1,000 μg/mL; 72 hours) has resulted in a dose-dependent inhibition of cell growth determined by MTT (3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide) assay. The quantification of caspase-3 and -9 activities and DNA fragmentation to assess the cell death pathway of the treated cells showed that both were stimulated when exposed to NiZn ferrite nanoparticles. Light microscopy examination of the cells exposed to NiZn ferrite nanoparticles demonstrated significant changes in cellular morphology. The HepG2 cells were most prone to apoptosis among the three cells lines examined, as the result of treatment with NiZn nanoparticles. In conclusion, NiZn ferrite nanoparticles are suggested to have potential cytotoxicity against cancer cells
Typhonium flagelliforme inhibits the proliferation of murine leukemia WEHI-3 cells in vitro and induces apoptosis in vivo
Typhonium flagelliforme (TF) is a tropical plant, traditionally used by the ethnic population of Malaysia for
the cure of various cancers. This plant had shown to induce antiproliferative effect as well as apoptosis in
cancer cells. However, there is no available information to address that TF affects murine leukemia cells in
vitro and in vivo. Here, we investigated in vitro and in vivo effects of TF on murine leukemia WEHI-3 cells.
It was found that the growth of leukemia cells in vitro was inhibited by the various extracts of TF. Among
these fractions, the dichloromethane (DCM) tuber extracts of TF showed the lowest IC50 (24.0±5.2g/ml)
and had demonstrated apoptogenic effect when observed under fluorescent microscope.Weinvestigated
the in vivo effects of DCM tuber extracts of TF on murine leukemia cells, and the results showed that the
counts of immature granulocytes and monocytes were significantly decreased in peripheral blood of
BALB/c leukemia mice after the oral administration of DCM tuber extracts of TF for 28 days with three
doses (200, 400 and 800 mg/kg). These results were confirmed by observing the spleen histopathology and
morphology of enlarged spleen and liver in leukemia micewhencompared with the control. Furthermore,
the cell death mechanism in the spleen tissue of treated mice was found via apoptosis
