    Effect of Task-Based Learning on EFL Grade Ten Students’ Achievement in English Collocations

    In this paper, we investigated the impact of task-based learning instruction on the development of English collocation skills among Grade 10 EFL students in a Jordanian secondary school. The 64 participants were divided into a control and an experimental group, with data collected during the first semester of the 2022-2023 school year. The experimental group used task-based instruction, while the control group used a traditional method. Data were collected using FL writing pre- and post-tests and analyzed using descriptive statistics, paired samples T-Test, and independent samples T-Test. The results showed that the experimental group achieved significant improvement in using FL collocations. The study recommends the use of task-based teaching techniques to enhance the achievement of Grade 10 basic secondary school students in using FL collocations

    Thermodynamic Properties of Graphene Using the Static Fluctuation Approximation (SFA)

    The thermodynamic properties of two-dimensional graphene nanosystems are investigated using the static fluctuation approximation (SFA). These properties are analyzed using both extensive and nonextensive statistical mechanics. It is found that these properties are less sensitive to the temperature when using nonextensive â in contrast to extensive â statistical mechanics.     Developing a geoscience knowledge framework for a national geological survey organisation

    Geological survey organisations (GSOs) are established by most nations to provide a geoscience knowledge base for effective decision-making on mitigating the impacts of natural hazards and global change, and on sustainable management of natural resources. The value of the knowledge base as a national asset is continually enhanced by exchange of knowledge between GSOs as data and information providers and the stakeholder community as knowledge ‘users and exploiters’. Geological maps and associated narrative texts typically form the core of national geoscience knowledge bases, but have some inherent limitations as methods of capturing and articulating knowledge. Much knowledge about the 3D spatial interpretation and its derivation and uncertainty, and the wider contextual value of the knowledge, remains intangible in the minds of the mapping geologist in implicit and tacit form. To realise the value of these knowledge assets, the British Geological Survey (BGS) has established a workflow-based cyber-infrastructure to enhance its knowledge management and exchange capability. Future geoscience surveys in the BGS will contribute to a national, 3D digital knowledge base on UK geology, with the associated implicit and tacit information captured as metadata, qualitative assessments of uncertainty, and documented workflows and best practice. Knowledge-based decision-making at all levels of society requires both the accessibility and reliability of knowledge to be enhanced in the grid-based world. Establishment of collaborative cyber-infrastructures and ontologies for geoscience knowledge management and exchange will ensure that GSOs, as knowledge-based organisations, can make their contribution to this wider goal

    Hereditary angioedema in a Jordanian family with a novel missense mutation in the C1-inhibitor N-terminal domain

    Hereditary angioedema due to C1-inhibitor deficiency (C1-INH-HAE) is an autosomal dominant disease caused by mutations in the SERPING1 gene. A Jordanian family, including 14 individuals with C1-INH-HAE clinical symptoms, was studied. In the propositus and his parents, SERPING1 had four mutations leading to amino acid substitutions. Two are known polymorphic variants (c.167T>C; p.Val34Ala and c.1438G>A; p.Val458Met), the others are newly described. One (c.203C>T; p.Thr46Ile) is located in the N-terminal domain of the C1-inhibitor protein and segregates with angioedema symptoms in the family. The other (c.800C>T; p.Ala245Val) belongs to the serpin domain, and derives from the unaffected father. DNA from additional 24 family members were screened for c.203C>T mutation in the target gene. All individuals heterozygous for the c.203C>T mutation had antigenic and functional plasma levels of C1-inhibitor below 50% of normal, confirming the diagnosis of type I C1-INH-HAE. Angioedema symptoms were present in 14 of 16 subjects carrier for the c.203T allele. Among these subjects, those carrying the c.800T variation had more severe and frequent symptoms than subjects without this mutation. This family-based study provides the first evidence that multiple amino acid substitutions in SERPING1 could influence C1-INH-HAE phenotype
