Internal Consistency Reliability in Measurement: Aggregate and Multilevel Approaches

    Get PDF
The purpose of the present paper was to evaluate the internal consistency reliability of the General Teacher Test assuming clustered and non-clustered data using commercial software (Mplus). Participants were 2,000 testees who were selected using random sampling from a larger pool of examinees (more than 65k). The measure involved four factors, namely: (a) planning for learning, (b) promoting learning, (c) supporting learning, and (d) professional responsibilities and was hypothesized to comprise a unidimensional instrument assessing generalized skills and competencies. Intra-class correlation coefficients and variance ratio statistics suggested the need to incorporate a clustering variable (i.e., university) when evaluating the factor structure of the measure. Results indicated that single level reliability estimation significantly overestimated the reliability observed across persons and underestimated the reliability at the clustering variable (university). One level reliability was also, at times, lower than the lowest acceptable levels leading to a conclusion of unreliability whereas multilevel reliability was low at the between person level but excellent at the between university level. It is concluded that ignoring nesting is associated with distorted and erroneous estimates of internal consistency reliability of an ability measure and the use of MCFA is imperative to account for dependencies between levels of analyses

A bacterial isolate and a microalga were identified to the genus level using 16S and 18S rRNA gene sequences respectively and· phylogenetic trees were constructed. The bacterial isolate belonged to the genus Halomonas and it was called Halomonas sp. NAH1, whereas the microalga was confirmed as belonging to the species Dunalie/la salina GGAP 19/30 which was the source of 18S rRNA gene. Glycerol production by three strains of the unicellular microalga Dunalie/la (D. parva 19/9, D. parva 19/10, and D. salina 19/30) was explored. The strains were grown in batch cultures in a range of salinities (0.1 4.0 M NaCI). Both intracellular and extracellular glycerol concentrations were measured. All three strains grew well over the range of salinities with optimum growth for all strains at 0.1 to 0.4 M NaC1. All strains leak significant amounts of glycerol in batch cultures. Significant leakage of glycerol into the growth medium was found to be an intrinsic property of the three strains tested. Two strains of Dunalie/la salina (GGAP 19/18 and 19/30) were grown in batch cultures and aerated with different concentrations of G02. Strain 19/18 accumulated large amounts of ~-carotene under nitrogen limitation whereas the strain 19/30 did not. Halomonas sp. NAH1 grew optimally at 1.0 M NaCI and utilised glucose, glycerol or betaine as the sole source of carbon. Glucose supported the most rapid growth rate. Sensitivity of NAH1 to antibiotics was determined and tetracycline had the most inhibitory effect on growth. The cyanobacteria Arthrospira fusiformis GGAP 1475/8 and Spirulina platensis UTEX LB 2340 were shown to be only slightly halotolerant with optimum growth for S. platensis at 0.1 M NaC1 and for A. fusiformis at 0.5 M NaC1. Phycobiliprotein content was very low in both strains, but very high protein content (92.9% of the dry weight biomass) was obtained for S. platensis. This strain looks very promising for mass cultivation for food and/or feed purposes. Glucosyl-glycerol was found to be the compatible solute in both A. fusiformis and S. platensis

    Get PDF
To investigate factors associated with cognitive functioning in healthy adolescents, a school-based cross-sectional study was conducted on 1370 adolescents aged 11-16 years that were randomly selected from all governorates of Kuwait. Raven\u27s Standard Progressive Matrices (SPM), a non-verbal test of intelligence, was used to measure cognitive functioning of the study participants. Data on predictors of cognitive functioning were collected from parents and adolescents. Weight and height of the participants were measured in a standardized manner and blood samples were tested in an accredited laboratory under strict measures of quality control. In multivariable linear regression analysis, factors that showed significant association with the SPM score were gender (p=0.002), season of birth (p=0.009), place of residence (p\u3c0.001), father\u27s (p\u3c0.001) and mother\u27s (p=0.025) educational level, type of housing (p\u3c0.001), passive smoking at home (p=0.031), sleeping hours during weekends (p=0.017), students\u27 educational level (p\u3c0.001) and the frequency of consumption of sugary drinks (p\u3c0.001). The link between cognitive functioning and season of birth seems to be robust in various geographical locations including the Middle East. The association between sugary drinks and cognitive functioning highlights the importance of diet independently of obesity and support efforts to reduce consumption of sugary drinks among children

Financial market authorities demand participants in the market to disclose relevant information to the public. So that to prevent the utilization of individuals, less informed, and minority investors by exporting companies, in the ground of Islamic capital markets, particularly in sukuk markets, in order to achieve the bargain by applying the principle of avoiding excessive uncertainty and reducing asymmetry information between different parties in the sukuk contract, where disclosure of specific information is required by Islamic law authorities. Certainly this disclosure is the first layer to protect investor and consumer. Information relating to Sukuk investment is disclosed not only at the time of issue but also thereafter. This is a special trend of the sukuk market. The main objective of this paper is to assess the disclosure regulations within the presentation process and the secondary market activities of sukuk in Saudi Arabia

Background: Few studies are available regarding the prevalence of sleep disturbance in cirrhotic patients without overt hepatic encephalopathy. This study aimed to assess the prevalence of insomnia in stable liver cirrhosis patients who are attending the outpatient clinics at King Abdulaziz Medical City, Riyadh (KAMC-KFNGH). Methods: A cross-sectional study enrolled 200 stable patients with confirmed liver cirrhosis. We used the ICSD-2 definition to assess the prevalence of insomnia. We also collected information about sleep patterns, demographic data, the underlying cause of liver cirrhosis and the severity of liver cirrhosis using Child-Pugh scores (CTP). Results: The mean age was 58.9 (SD ± 12.2) years. Hepatitis C was the most common (60.2%) cause of liver cirrhosis among respondents. The prevalence of insomnia was 42% (84/200). Univarite analysis shows association between coffee intake and the presence of insomnia (56.9% vs. 35.9%, p-value = 0.006). The prevalence of insomnia was higher in hepatitis C (51.7%) compared to hepatitis B (36.8%) and other hepatitis (15%), p-value = 0.001. There was a significant relationship between severity of liver cirrhosis (CTP-A, CTP-C, CTP-B) and prevalence of insomnia: 55%, 36.1% and 32.1% respectively, p-value = 0.009. Insomniac patients were significantly older than non-insomniac (61.6 ± 12.0 vs. 57.0 ± 12.0 years, p = 0.008). Results from the multivariate stepwise analysis showed coffee intake (OR=2.7), hepatitis C (OR = 7.2), CTP-A (OR = 1.9), excessive daytime sleepiness (OR = 5.3) and short sleep duration (OR = 5.7) were the most strongly associated with the presence of insomnia. Conclusion: Our study showed a high prevalence of insomnia in patients with liver cirrhosis
