No full text
A passage to India, of E.M. Forster, sheds light on the psychological journey of the main characters (Mrs. Moore, Mrs. Adela Quested, Dr. Aziz) who are connected to the incident of the Marabar caves. E. M. Foster has given the readers the opportunities to analyze and discuss the novel from various angles. Having the context in India and characters from the Britain, this text can be analyzed from different perspectives including colonial studies, political perspective, physical and mental passage of British people to India, cultural conflict, religious conflict, racism and so on. And all these issues along with Marabar Caves do create some impacts on the characters in different times as the storyline gets developed in the novel. The experience of the Marabar caves affected the minds of the characters and a great deal of transformation is observed among them. This paper highlights how the story of Dr. Aziz changes with the incoming of Adela and Mrs. Moore as well as how the deflection that occurs in the Marabar Caves incident transits these character’s life into a new diverse vision. This paper also focuses how the journey of the characters switches into a new mode of realization; find a new identity, new philosophy of life through the transitions. &nbsp

Will We Care for the Soil Surrounding Us? An Analysis of Legal Framework for Soil Protection in Bangladesh

No full text
Soil as natural resources, is an amazing gift of nature and all living and non-living things are influenced by the soil in which it is imbibed. At present soil is highly polluted, contaminated and degraded mainly by different anthropogenic activities in Bangladesh. Until recently, the Government of Bangladesh had not enacted any law, policy or action plan to safeguard its soil in conformity with environmental conservation mandate detailed in its Constitution. Soil pollution has already crossed all borders and its protection is crucial to meet the contemporary global goals including achieving SDGs. Therefore, this article is an attempt to analyse present legal regime related to prevention of soil pollution, contamination and degradation (PCD) that results from different human activities such as industrialisation, unsustainable urbanisation, waste dumping, unsustainable soil use and management in Bangladesh. It finds that, soil PCD for such causes have already been addressed directly or indirectly in some legal instruments but those were insufficient, generic in nature and carried on along with lack of monitoring, accountability and implementation. However, if properly implemented, those measures might help to reduce soil PCD. Furthermore, soil PCD control is not possible without establishing accountability of the implementing authority, mass awareness and the enactment of legislation solely to protect the soil. Therefore, we argue that the implementation of existing law along with risk control policies and scientific guidelines are crucial to ensure soil management and protection. Finally we argue that impediments to the filing of suits in environmental courts should be lifted so as to ensure that common people have access to environmental justice in order to conserve the soil resources, achieve SDGs, and maintain a healthy natural world.</p

In Vitro Regeneration of Dendrobium sp. of Orchid Using Leaf Tip as Explant

Plant growth regulators (PGRs) namely, 2,4-D, NAA and BAP were added into Murashige and Skoog (MS) medium to observe the effect of PGRs on the growth and development of Dendrobium sp. orchid. Leaf tips of Dendrobium sp. were used as explants and inoculated on MS medium supplemented with 2, 4 D (0, 0.5, 2.5, 5, 10 mgL?1) for development of PLBs. The maximum PLBs formation (90%) and the maximum number of PLBs (16.00) were observed in 10 mgL?1 2, 4-D into MS medium after 60 days of culture. Subcultured PLBs were inoculated on MS medium supplemented with different combinations of NAA (0, 0.5, 2.5, 5 mgL?1) and BAP (0, 0.5, 2.5, 5 mgL?1) for shoot regeneration. The maximum number of shoot (11.00), the highest fresh weight (0.6233g) and the highest shoot length (3.613 cm) were observed in 0.5 mgL?1 NAA + 0.5 mgL?1 BAP after 60 days of culture. Even, the maximum number of root (4.00), the maximum root length (1.627cm) and the maximum plantlet regeneration percentage (93.33%) were observed with the combined effect of 0.5 mg NAA and 0.5 mg BAP after 60 days of culture. Finally, regenerated plantlets were transferred into half strength MS medium to obtain plants.J. Environ. Sci. & Natural Resources, 8(2): 75-78 2015</jats:p

Selenium as well as copper, zinc, and manganese play an important role in the detoxification of free radicals. There might be possible interactions with the mechanisms of action for cytostatic drugs as well as ionizing radiation. To further investigate these interactions, in vitro experiments are necessary. For most trace elements however, there are only few in vitro toxicity data for cultured cells (1, 2, 3, 4). Neither all trace elements nor all cell lines of interest have been tested. To enable further experiments on the influence of trace elements on the chemo- and radiosensitivity of cultured cells, it is therefore necessary to establish valid toxicity data for the trace elements and cell lines concerned.
