Parallel eigenanalysis of finite element models in a completely connected architecture
A parallel algorithm is presented for the solution of the generalized eigenproblem in linear elastic finite element analysis, (K)(phi) = (M)(phi)(omega), where (K) and (M) are of order N, and (omega) is order of q. The concurrent solution of the eigenproblem is based on the multifrontal/modified subspace method and is achieved in a completely connected parallel architecture in which each processor is allowed to communicate with all other processors. The algorithm was successfully implemented on a tightly coupled multiple-instruction multiple-data parallel processing machine, Cray X-MP. A finite element model is divided into m domains each of which is assumed to process n elements. Each domain is then assigned to a processor or to a logical processor (task) if the number of domains exceeds the number of physical processors. The macrotasking library routines are used in mapping each domain to a user task. Computational speed-up and efficiency are used to determine the effectiveness of the algorithm. The effect of the number of domains, the number of degrees-of-freedom located along the global fronts and the dimension of the subspace on the performance of the algorithm are investigated. A parallel finite element dynamic analysis program, p-feda, is documented and the performance of its subroutines in parallel environment is analyzed
Electrical Characteristics and Nanocrystalline Formation of Sprayed Iridium Oxide Thin Films
Nanostructure and electrical properties of iridium oxide (IrO2) thin films prepared by spray pyrolysis technique (SPT) have been experimentally characterized. The effect of solution molarity (SM) and substrate temperature (sub) on the nanostructure features and electrical conductivity of these films has been investigated. The results of X-ray diffraction (XRD) showed that all samples prepared at sub=350∘C with different SM, IrO2 appear almost in amorphous form. XRD revealed that the films deposited at sub=450∘C were tetragonal structures with a preferential orientation along ⟨101⟩ direction. Moreover, the degree of crystallinity was improved by solution molarity. Single order Voigt profile method has been used to determine the nanostructure parameters at different SM and sub. The dark conductivity measurements at room temperature as a function of SM were observed and the value of conductivity were slightly increases at higher SM, reaching the bulk value of 20 Ω−1cm−1. The values of activation energy of Δ and of IrO2 were found to be 0.21 eV and 1.68×10−3Ω−1·cm−1, respectively
Teacher Perception of the School Nurses in Addressing Obesity Among School Children in Kuwait
Obesity in children is a global issue and it seems that no country has yet succeeded in addressing this issue. Therefore, investigating the current situation in regard to found new strategies in addressing the overweight and obesity in children by using qualitative research approaches was an important decision made at the beginning of the data collection. This study was conducted to examine the perceptions of school teachers towards the role of the school nurse in tackling obesity among children in Kuwait. Method: Twelve focus group discussions were used to collect the data to obtain in-depth details about the role of school nursing in addressing obesity among school children in sex provinces in Kuwait, The qualitative data were analysed using content analysis. NVivo 10® qualitative analysis software was used during the process of coding and the development of themes. Result: The focus group findings revealed the following key theme and perceptions among participants: The possible important role of the school nurse is minimised due to limitations of availability (not in every school) and their current roles. focus groups reported that nurses were limited to providing first aid to students, whereas nurses are able to serve in a more proactive, preventative capacity, although not asked to do so. Conclusion: school nurses were under-recognised and not appropriately utilised, as most participants in the second phase did not consider the school nurse as a part of the solution and believed that nurses were employed for emergency needs only. This is not in line with several studies that found that the activities of school nurses, such as delivering health education and taking body weight measurements, is associated with school children having a healthy body weight. Also, school nurses play a major role in advocating for the creation of a healthy environment for school children. Therefore, the current study calls for school nurses to be a part of the solution. Stakeholders' perceptions of rehabilitation services for individuals living with disability:A survey study
Background: The World Health Organization (WHO) was tasked with developing health system guidelines for the implementation of rehabilitation services. Stakeholders' perceptions are an essential factor to take into account in the guideline development process. The aim of this study was to assess stakeholders' perceived feasibility and acceptability of eighteen rehabilitation services and the values they attach to ten rehabilitation outcomes. Â Methods: We disseminated an online self-administered questionnaire through a number of international and regional organizations from the different WHO regions. Eligible individuals included persons with disability, caregivers of persons with disability, health professionals, administrators and policy makers. The answer options consisted of a 9-point Likert scale. Â Results: Two hundred fifty three stakeholders participated. The majority of participants were health professional (64 %). In terms of outcomes, 'Increasing access' and 'Optimizing utilization' were the top service outcomes rated as critical (i.e., 7, 8 or 9 on the Likert scale) by >70 % of respondents. 'Fewer hospital admissions', 'Decreased burden of care' and 'Increasing longevity' were the services rated as least critical (57 %, 63 % and 58 % respectively). In terms of services, 'Community based rehabilitation' and 'Home based rehabilitation' were found to be both definitely feasible and acceptable (75 % and 74 % respectively). 'Integrated and decentralized rehabilitation services' was found to be less feasible than acceptable according to stakeholders (61 % and 71 % respectively). As for 'Task shifting', most stakeholders did not appear to find task shifting as either definitely feasible or definitely acceptable (63 % and 64 % respectively). Â Conclusion: The majority of stakeholder's perceived 'Increasing access' and 'Optimizing utilization' as most critical amongst rehabilitation outcomes. The feasibility of the 'Integrated and decentralized rehabilitation services' was perceived to be less than their acceptability. The majority of stakeholders found 'Task shifting' as neither feasible nor acceptable
On the Use of Key Assignment Schemes in Authentication Protocols
Key Assignment Schemes (KASs) have been extensively studied in the context of
cryptographically-enforced access control, where derived keys are used to
decrypt protected resources. In this paper, we explore the use of KASs in
entity authentication protocols, where we use derived keys to encrypt
challenges. This novel use of KASs permits the efficient authentication of an
entity in accordance with an authentication policy by associating entities with
security labels representing specific services. Cryptographic keys are
associated with each security label and demonstrating knowledge of an
appropriate key is used as the basis for authentication. Thus, by controlling
the distribution of such keys, restrictions may be efficiently placed upon the
circumstances under which an entity may be authenticated and the services to
which they may gain access.
In this work, we explore how both standardized protocols and novel
constructions may be developed to authenticate entities as members of a group
associated to a particular security label, whilst protecting the long-term
secrets in the system. We also see that such constructions may allow for
authentication whilst preserving anonymity, and that by including a trusted
third party we can achieve the authentication of individual identities and
authentication based on timestamps without the need for synchronized clocks
An educational game for teaching clinical practice guidelines to Internal Medicine residents: development, feasibility and acceptability
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Adherence to Clinical Practice Guidelines (CPGs) remains suboptimal among internal medicine trainees. Educational games are of growing interest and have the potential to improve adherence to CPGs. The objectives of this study were to develop an educational game to teach CPGs in Internal Medicine residency programs and to evaluate its feasibility and acceptability.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>We developed the Guide-O-Game<sup>© </sup>in the format of a TV game show with questions based on recommendations of CPGs. The development of the Guide-O-Game<sup>© </sup>consisted of the creation of a multimedia interactive tool, the development of recommendation-based questions, and the definition of the game's rules. We evaluated its feasibility through pilot testing and its acceptability through a qualitative process.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The multimedia interactive tool uses a Macromedia Flash web application and consists of a manager interface and a user interface. The user interface allows the choice of two game styles. We created so far 16 sets of questions relating to 9 CPGs. The pilot testing proved that the game was feasible. The qualitative evaluation showed that residents considered the game to be acceptable.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>We developed an educational game to teach CPGs to Internal Medicine residents that is both feasible and acceptable. Future work should evaluate its impact on educational outcomes.</p
Did the post war repatriation of Lebanese physicians drive recent Lebanese medical graduates to emigrate? An observational study
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>A significant number of Lebanese medical graduates have emigrated from Lebanon. The objective of this study was to evaluate the hypothesis that the repatriation of Lebanese physicians educated abroad has contributed to the international emigration of recent Lebanese medical graduates.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>We analyzed the demographic and educational characteristics and the year of registration of physicians registered with the two physician associations in Lebanon as of 2007. We then analyzed the number of new and total registrants and the physician density for the years 1977–2006. Finally we calculated the percentage of Lebanese graduates of the years 1977–2006 registered as of 2007.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>As of 2007, 10,918 physicians were registered in Lebanon. Most were male (80.4%) and graduated from either Lebanese (36.4%) or Eastern European (30.6%) medical schools. The top three regions of specialty training were Western Europe (31.8%), Eastern Europe (28.4%) and Lebanon (25.7%). About half the physicians registered with the Lebanese Order of Physicians as of 2007 joined during the 1990s decade; only 26.2% of these graduated from Lebanese medical schools during that decade. The number of new registrants increased dramatically in the early 1990s and started decreasing in the early 2000s. About 60% of Lebanese medical graduates of the years 1977–2006 were registered in Lebanon as of 2007. Categorizing Lebanese medical graduates by their year of graduation, the percentage registered in Lebanon as of 2007 showed a "dip" for those who graduated in the early 1990s.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>The high number of physicians educated abroad returning to Lebanon after the end of the civil war may have driven recent Lebanese medical graduates to emigrate.</p
A well-separated pairs decomposition algorithm for k-d trees implemented on multi-core architectures

For example particle track tting in the software of the LHC experiments, and in simulations of N-body systems in the study of dynamics of interacting galaxies, particle beam physics, and molecular dynamics in biochemistry. The many-body tree methods devised by Barnes and Hutt in the 1980s and the Fast Multipole Method introduced in 1987 by Greengard and Rokhlin use variants of k-d trees to reduce the computation time upper bounds to O(n log n) and even O(n) from O(n2). We present an algorithm that uses the principle of well-separated pairs decomposition to always produce compressed trees in O(n log n) work. We present and evaluate parallel implementations for the algorithm that can take advantage of multi-core architectures.The Science and Technology Facilities Council, UK
A Decision Aid for COPD patients considering inhaled steroid therapy: development and before and after pilot testing
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Decision aids (DA) are tools designed to help patients make specific and deliberative choices among disease management options. DAs can improve the quality of decision-making and reduce decisional conflict. An area not covered by a DA is the decision of a patient with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) to use inhaled steroids which requires balancing the benefits and downsides of therapy.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>We developed a DA for COPD patients considering inhaled steroid therapy using the Ottawa Decision Support Framework, the best available evidence for using inhaled steroid in COPD and the expected utility model. The development process involved patients, pulmonologists, DA developers and decision making experts. We pilot tested the DA with 8 COPD patients who completed an evaluation questionnaire, a knowledge scale, and a validated decisional conflict scale.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The DA is a computer-based interactive tool incorporating four different decision making models. In the first part, the DA provides information about COPD as a disease, the different treatment options, and the benefits and downsides of using inhaled steroids. In the second part, it coaches the patient in the decision making process through clarifying values and preferences. Patients evaluated 10 out of 13 items of the DA positively and showed significant improvement on both the knowledge scale (p = 0.008) and the decisional conflict scale (p = 0.008).</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>We have developed a computer-based interactive DA for COPD patients considering inhaled steroids serving as a model for other DAs in COPD, in particular related to inhaled therapies. Future research should assess the DA effectiveness.</p
