    Conversion of Normal Ly-1-Positive B-Lineage Cells into Ly-1-Positive Macrophages in Long-Term Bone Marrow Cultures

    We obtained eight different cell lines in the long-term bone marrow culture system that showed a germ-line configuration of the joining (J) region segments of the Ig heavy-chain (IgH) genes. Their surface markers were CD45R+, Ly-1+, Lyb-2+, cIgM-, sIgM-, Ia-, Thy-1-, Mac-1-, and IL-2R (Tac)+. Use of very young mice and the presence of IL-5 were important for preferential promotion of the survival of B-lineage lymphocytes bearing the Ly-1 markers. When we treated two of them (J8 and J10) with 5-azacytidine for 24 h followed by co-culture with stromal cells and IL-.5, they became Ly-1+, sIgM+ B cells, and Ly-1+, Mac-1+ macrophagelike cells, respectively. After other early lymphoid lines (J1, J8, and J13) were maintained by co-culture with ST2 and IL-5 for more than a year, they showed a heterogeneous DNA rearrangement profile of the J region segment of the IgH gene, although only J13 rearranged the κ-light chain gene. Northern blot analysis revealed that these cell lines expressed Cμ-mRNA, and λ5-mRNA, consistent with normal pre-B cells. Intriguingly, J1, J8, and J13 expressed c-fms mRNA constitutively. When J13 cells were co-cultured with ST2 and GM-CSF in place of ST2 and IL-5, they acquired Mac-1 expression and retained Ly-1 expression. They were morphologically macrophages, nonspecific-esterase-positive, and showed phagocytosis of latex beads. These results support evidence for a close relationship between the myeloid and Ly-1+ B-cell pathways of differentiation, and indicate that our IL- 5-dependent clones are multipotential intermediates in differentiation from pro-B cells to B cells and macrophages

    Snow chemistry of Agassiz Ice Cap, Ellesmere Island, Northwest Territories, Canada

    AbstractPit-wall samples were collected from two sites about 2 km apart on Agassiz Ice Cap, Ellesmere Island, Northwest Territories, Canada, in 1992, 1993 and 1994, and from a site a further 1 km distant, in order to study spatial and seasonal variations in snow chemistry. Two of the pits were dug in wind-scoured zones and one in an unscoured zone. Although a large part of the winter snow is removed from the scoured zones (which do not show very negativeδ18O values) the winter/spring anion peaks are still evident; this may be due to the predominance of dry deposition in mid-winter. The Cl−and SO42–ions peak in late winter/early spring, while NO3−peaks both in late winter/early spring and in summer. Vertical concentration profiles of all anions did not significantly alter over a 2 year period, indicating that there are no serious post-depositional changes due to evaporation, snow melting or photochemical reactions. However, comparisons between stake/board snow-accumulation measurements and those derived from the least scoured pit indicate that a single pit will represent annual accumulation rates for a local area only

     武庫川女子大学文学部日本語日本文学科において,情報領域は初年次情報科目や資格科目といった「実用」やデザイン系科目による「美的表現」を主たる目的として設置されている。しかし学科の背景でもある伝統的な人文学を思考する手段として,メディアを利用するような「制作」はほとんど検討されていない。本稿ではメディア表現のゼミを通じて,「創造的再解釈」と「メディア表現」を重視した文学を映像にアダプテーションする教育的実践を提案し,原作とアダプテーションの比較分析とコメントシートを通じて実践の成果を検討した。そこから小説にはない映像メディアの特徴を活かした表現や,現代的な若者の在り様を示した30 年以上前の原作の結末に対する新たな解釈,構成要素に分けた置換のアプローチ,心情から対話への変更,原作を深く読み込む姿勢などが見られ,制作実践の教育的成果を確認することができた

    A Case of Ovarian Actinomycosis

    Background: Pelvic actinomycosis is uncommon and often presents as a complication of an intrauterine device (IUD). A diagnosis of actinomycosis can be made from the finding of sulfur granules within inflammatory exudate on histologic examination after surgery. However, it may be possible to diagnose actinomycosis before surgery by finding Actinomyces-like organisms on Papanicolaou smears. Case: A 41-year-old woman had been diagnosed as having a pelvic abscess, and bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy was performed. She had been an IUD user for 6 years. Actinomyces-like organisms were detected in her previous Papanicolaou cervical smears. If the patient had been treated when the Actinomyces-like organisms were detected by Papanicolaou smears, the serious ovarian actinomycosis might have been avoided. Conclusion: We suggest that routine cervical examinations are important for women who are IUD users

    Role of periostin

    Periostin, also termed osteoblast-specific factor 2, is a matricellular protein with known functions in osteology, tissue repair, oncology, cardiovascular and respiratory systems, and in various inflammatory settings. However, most of the research to date has been conducted in divergent and circumscribed areas meaning that the overall understanding of this intriguing molecule remains fragmented. Here, we integrate the available evidence on periostin expression, its normal role in development, and whether it plays a similar function during pathologic repair, regeneration, and disease in order to bring together the different research fields in which periostin investigations are ongoing. In spite of the seemingly disparate roles of periostin in health and disease, tissue remodeling as a response to insult/injury is emerging as a common functional denominator of this matricellular molecule. Periostin is transiently upregulated during cell fate changes, either physiologic or pathologic. Combining observations from various conditions, a common pattern of events can be suggested, including periostin localization during development, insult and injury, epithelial–mesenchymal transition, extracellular matrix restructuring, and remodeling. We propose mesenchymal remodeling as an overarching role for the matricellular protein periostin, across physiology and disease. Periostin may be seen as an important structural mediator, balancing appropriate versus inappropriate tissue adaption in response to insult/injury

    Nanographene Aerogels: Size Effect of the Precursor Graphene Oxide on Gelation Process and Electrochemical Properties

    Improving the electrochemical properties of graphene aerogels (GAs) without doping or making composites is an attractive synthetic strategy. In this work we report on the effects of graphene sheet dimensions on GAs. Nanographene aerogels (nG-AGs) were synthesized using nanographene oxide (nGO) powder with a mean platelet diameter of 90 nm. In-situ Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) during gelation revealed a longer fast gelation regime for nG-AGs than for stdG-AGs. The surface-area-normalized capacitance of nG-AGs calculated from cyclic voltammetry is 16% higher than that of stdG-AGs, and the onset of hydrogen evolution is observed at a lower over-potential. These observations can be attributed to increased edge sites and defects in nanographene sheets. Our results imply that the diameter of the precursor graphene sheets can be used as a parameter to optimize the electrochemical properties of graphene AGs depending on the application
