Diffusion and activation of n-type dopants in germanium
The diffusion and activation of -type impurities (P and As) implanted into
-type Ge(100) substrates were examined under various dose and annealing
conditions. The secondary ion mass spectrometry profiles of chemical
concentrations indicated the existence of a sufficiently high number of
impurities with increasing implanted doses. However, spreading resistance probe
profiles of electrical concentrations showed electrical concentration
saturation in spite of increasing doses and indicated poor activation of As
relative to P in Ge. The relationships between the chemical and electrical
concentrations of P in Ge and Si were calculated, taking into account the
effect of incomplete ionization. The results indicated that the activation of P
was almost the same in Ge and Si. The activation ratios obtained experimentally
were similar to the calculated values, implying insufficient degeneration of
Ge. The profiles of P in Ge substrates with and without damage generated by Ge
ion implantation were compared, and it was clarified that the damage that may
compensate the activated -type dopants has no relationship with the
activation of P in Ge.Comment: 6 pages, 4 figure
The high-affinity binding of Clostridium botulinum type B neurotoxin to synaptotagmin II associated with gangliosides GT1b/GD1a
Abstract125I-labeled botulinum type B neurotoxin was shown to bind specifically to recombinant rat synaptotagmins I and II. Binding required reconstitution of the recombinant proteins with gangliosides GT1b/GD1a. Scatchard plot analyses revealed a single class of binding site with dissociation constants of 0.23 and 2.3 nM for synaptotagmin II and synaptotagmin I, respectively, values very similar to those of the high- (0.4 nM) and low-affinity (4.1 nM) binding sites in synaptosomes. The high-affinity binding of neurotoxin to synaptosomes was specifically inhibited by a monoclonal antibody recognizing with the amino-terminal region of synaptotagmin II. These results suggest that this region of synaptotagmin II participates in the formation of the high-affinity toxin binding site by associating with specific gangliosides
International patient preferences for physician attire: results from cross-sectional studies in four countries across three continents.
OBJECTIVE
The patient-physician relationship impacts patients' experiences and health outcomes. Physician attire is a form of nonverbal communication that influences this relationship. Prior studies examining attire preferences suffered from heterogeneous measurement and limited context. We thus performed a multicentre, cross-sectional study using a standardised survey instrument to compare patient preferences for physician dress in international settings.
SETTING
20 hospitals and healthcare practices in Italy, Japan, Switzerland and the USA.
PARTICIPANTS
Convenience sample of 9171 adult patients receiving care in academic hospitals, general medicine clinics, specialty clinics and ophthalmology practices.
PRIMARY AND SECONDARY OUTCOME MEASURES
The survey was randomised and included photographs of a male or female physician dressed in assorted forms of attire. The primary outcome measure was attire preference, comprised of composite ratings across five domains: how knowledgeable, trustworthy, caring and approachable the physician appeared, and how comfortable the respondent felt. Secondary outcome measures included variation in preferences by country, physician type and respondent characteristics.
RESULTS
The highest rated forms of attire differed by country, although each most preferred attire with white coat. Low ratings were conferred on attire extremes (casual and business suit). Preferences were more uniform for certain physician types. For example, among all respondents, scrubs garnered the highest rating for emergency department physicians (44.2%) and surgeons (42.4%). However, attire preferences diverged for primary care and hospital physicians. All types of formal attire were more strongly preferred in the USA than elsewhere. Respondent age influenced preferences in Japan and the USA only.
CONCLUSIONS
Patients across a myriad of geographies, settings and demographics harbour specific preferences for physician attire. Some preferences are nearly universal, whereas others vary substantially. As a one-size-fits-all dress policy is unlikely to reflect patient desires and expectations, a tailored approach should be sought that attempts to match attire to clinical context
First Data Release of the Hyper Suprime-Cam Subaru Strategic Program
The Hyper Suprime-Cam Subaru Strategic Program (HSC-SSP) is a three-layered
imaging survey aimed at addressing some of the most outstanding questions in
astronomy today, including the nature of dark matter and dark energy. The
survey has been awarded 300 nights of observing time at the Subaru Telescope
and it started in March 2014. This paper presents the first public data release
of HSC-SSP. This release includes data taken in the first 1.7 years of
observations (61.5 nights) and each of the Wide, Deep, and UltraDeep layers
covers about 108, 26, and 4 square degrees down to depths of i~26.4, ~26.5, and
~27.0 mag, respectively (5sigma for point sources). All the layers are observed
in five broad bands (grizy), and the Deep and UltraDeep layers are observed in
narrow bands as well. We achieve an impressive image quality of 0.6 arcsec in
the i-band in the Wide layer. We show that we achieve 1-2 per cent PSF
photometry (rms) both internally and externally (against Pan-STARRS1), and ~10
mas and 40 mas internal and external astrometric accuracy, respectively. Both
the calibrated images and catalogs are made available to the community through
dedicated user interfaces and database servers. In addition to the pipeline
products, we also provide value-added products such as photometric redshifts
and a collection of public spectroscopic redshifts. Detailed descriptions of
all the data can be found online. The data release website is

An IFN-γ-IL-18 Signaling Loop Accelerates Memory CD8+ T Cell Proliferation
Rapid proliferation is one of the important features of memory CD8+ T cells, ensuring rapid clearance of reinfection. Although several cytokines such as IL-15 and IL-7 regulate relatively slow homeostatic proliferation of memory T cells during the maintenance phase, it is unknown how memory T cells can proliferate more quickly than naïve T cells upon antigen stimulation. To examine antigen-specific CD8+ T cell proliferation in recall responses in vivo, we targeted a model antigen, ovalbumin(OVA), to DEC-205+ dendritic cells (DCs) with a CD40 maturation stimulus. This led to the induction of functional memory CD8+ T cells, which showed rapid proliferation and multiple cytokine production (IFN-γ, IL-2, TNF-α) during the secondary challenge to DC-targeted antigen. Upon antigen-presentation, IL-18, an IFN-γ-inducing factor, accumulated at the DC:T cell synapse. Surprisingly, IFN-γ receptors were required to augment IL-18 production from DCs. Mice genetically deficient for IL-18 or IFN-γ-receptor 1 also showed delayed expansion of memory CD8+ T cells in vivo. These results indicate that a positive regulatory loop involving IFN-γ and IL-18 signaling contributes to the accelerated memory CD8+ T cell proliferation during a recall response to antigen presented by DCs
