    A direct element resequencing procedure

    Get PDF
Element by element frontal solution algorithms are utilized in many of the existing finite element codes. The overall computational efficiency of this type of procedure is directly related to the element data input sequence. Thus, it is important to have a pre-processor which will resequence these data so as to reduce the element wavefronts to be encountered in the solution algorithm. A direct element resequencing algorithm is detailed for reducing element wavefronts. It also generates computational by products that can be utilized in pre-front calculations and in various post-processors. Sample problems are presented and compared with other algorithms

The Kalai-Smorodinsky Bargaining Solution Manipulated by Pre-Donations is Concessionary

This study examines the manipulability of simple n-person bargaining problems by pre-donations where the Kalai-Smorodinsky solution is operant. We extend previous results on the manipulation of two-person bargaining problems to the n-person case and show that in a world where a prebargaining stage is instituted in which the bargainers may unilaterally alter the bargaining problem, bargainers with greater ideal payoffs transform the bargaining set into one on which the Kalai- Smorodinsky solution distributes payoffs in accordance with the Concessionary division rule of disputed property.Bargaining Solutions, Pre-donation, Kalai-Smorodinsky

Group therapy for sexually abused adolescents : assessment of coping skills, negative beliefs, and self-esteem

The sexual victimization of children in an increasing crime problem in this country and is now also recognized as a serious mental health issue. It has been estimated that the risk of victimization could be as high as one in ten for boys (Finkelhor, 1979) and one in three for girls (Anderson, Martin, Mullen, Romans, & Herbison, 1993). Girls are eight times as likely as boys to suffer rape (Finkelhor & Dziuba-Leatherman, 1994). Prevalence rates estimate between 15% and 38% of women (Finkelhor, 1984; Herman, 1981) and 6% of men (Finkelhor, 1984) have experienced childhood sexual abuse (CSA). There is also increasing evidence of the lasting traumatic impact of CSA. For some children its effects may persist over many years, even into adult life. McConkey (1992) estimates that at least 40% of CSA victims suffer enough from these symptoms to require therapy before or during adulthood. CSA can leave a victim with feelings of fear, anxiety, depression, posttraumatic stress, negative beliefs about life, negative self-image, and diminished self-esteem (Briere, 1989; Briere & Runtz, 1993; Browne & Finkelhor, 1986; Courtois, 1979, 1988; Dolan, 1991; Grayston, De Luca, & Boyes, 1992; Greene, 1993; Herman, 1981; Herman, Russell, & Trocki, 1986; Jehu,, Klassen, & Gazan, 1986; Kendall-Tackett, Williams, & finkelhor, 1993; Mennen & Meadow, 1994; Vandermey & Neff, 1986)

    Human factors in space telepresence

    Get PDF
The problems of interfacing a human with a teleoperation system, for work in space are discussed. Much of the information presented here is the result of experience gained by the M.I.T. Space Systems Laboratory during the past two years of work on the ARAMIS (Automation, Robotics, and Machine Intelligence Systems) project. Many factors impact the design of the man-machine interface for a teleoperator. The effects of each are described in turn. An annotated bibliography gives the key references that were used. No conclusions are presented as a best design, since much depends on the particular application desired, and the relevant technology is swiftly changing

Study of onboard expert systems to augment space shuttle and space station autonomy

    Get PDF
The feasibility of onboard crew activity planning was examined. The use of expert systems technology to aid crewmembers in locating stowed equipment was also investigated. The crew activity planning problem, along with a summary of past and current research efforts, was discussed in detail. The requirements and specifications used to develop the crew activity planning system was also defined. The guidelines used to create, develop, and operate the MFIVE Crew Scheduler and Logistics Clerk were discussed. Also discussed is the mathematical algorithm, used by the MFIVE Scheduler, which was developed to aid in optimal crew activity planning

Oscillation Criteria for Fourth Order Nonlinear Positive Delay Differential Equations with a Middle Term

    Get PDF
In this article, we establish some new criteria for the oscillation of fourth order nonlinear delay differential equations of the form (Equation presented) provided that the second order equation (Equation presented) is nonoscillatiory or oscillatory. This equation with g(t) = t is considered in [8] and some oscillation criteria for this equation via certain energy functions are established. Here, we continue the study on the oscillatory behavior of this equation via some inequalities

Asymptotic Behavior of Certain Integrodifferential Equations

    Get PDF
This paper deals with asymptotic behavior of nonoscillatory solutions of certain forced integrodifferential equations of the form: (a(t)x\u27(t))\u27 = e (t) + ∫ tc (t - s)α - 1k(t,s)ƒ(s,x(s))ds, c \u3e 1, 0 \u3c α \u3c 1. From the obtained results, we derive a technique which can be applied to some related integrodifferential as well as integral equations

The Higgs Mechanism in Heterotic Orbifolds

We study spontaneous gauge symmetry breaking in the framework of orbifold compactifcations of heterotic string theory. In particular we investigate the electroweak symmetry breakdown via the Higgs mechanism. Such a breakdown can be achieved by continuous Wilson lines. Exploiting the geometrical properties of this scheme we develop a new technique which simplifies the analysis used in previous discussions.Comment: 38 pages, 10 figure

Space Applications of Automation, Robotics and Machine Intelligence Systems (ARAMIS), phase 2. Volume 1: Telepresence technology base development

    Get PDF
The field of telepresence is defined, and overviews of those capabilities that are now available, and those that will be required to support a NASA telepresence effort are provided. Investigation of NASA's plans and goals with regard to telepresence, extensive literature search for materials relating to relevant technologies, a description of these technologies and their state of the art, and projections for advances in these technologies over the next decade are included. Several space projects are examined in detail to determine what capabilities are required of a telepresence system in order to accomplish various tasks, such as servicing and assembly. The key operational and technological areas are identified, conclusions and recommendations are made for further research, and an example developmental program is presented, leading to an operational telepresence servicer
