    Differences in Risk Factors for Rotator Cuff Tears between Elderly Patients and Young Patients

    It has been unclear whether the risk factors for rotator cuff tears are the same at all ages or differ between young and older populations. In this study, we examined the risk factors for rotator cuff tears using classification and regression tree analysis as methods of nonlinear regression analysis. There were 65 patients in the rotator cuff tears group and 45 patients in the intact rotator cuff group. Classification and regression tree analysis was performed to predict rotator cuff tears. The target factor was rotator cuff tears; explanatory variables were age, sex, trauma, and critical shoulder angle≥35°. In the results of classification and regression tree analysis, the tree was divided at age 64. For patients aged≥64, the tree was divided at trauma. For patients aged<64, the tree was divided at critical shoulder angle≥35°. The odds ratio for critical shoulder angle≥35° was significant for all ages (5.89), and for patients aged<64 (10.3) while trauma was only a significant factor for patients aged≥64 (5.13). Age, trauma, and critical shoulder angle≥35° were related to rotator cuff tears in this study. However, these risk factors showed different trends according to age group, not a linear relationship

    This paper deals with the recent data on the formation ranges, microstructure and mechanical properties of nonequilibrium supersaturated solid solution including fcc and amorphous phases in Al-Ln-TM (Ln=lanthanide metal, TM=transition metal) ternary system produced by rapid solidification. The tensile fracture strength (σ_f) increases with increasing solute elements and the highest σ_f is about 860 MPa for the fcc supersaturated solution and 1280 MPa for the amorphous phase. The compositional dependence of σ_f for both phases is dominated by the bonding nature among the constituent elements and independent of their atomic size ratios and atomic arrangements

    Formation and High Mechanical Strength of Al-Based Alloys Containing a Nanoscale Icosahedral Phase As a Main Constituent

    This paper reviews our recent results on the achievement of high tensile strength and good ductility for rapidly solidified Al-Mn-Ln and Al-Cr-Ln (Ln=lanthanide metal) alloys containing an icosahedral phase as a main constituent phase. The good mechanical properties are attributed to the simultaneous achievement of the following three structural effects resulting from rapid solidification and appropriate alloy design; (1) the formation of a mixed structure consisting of nanoscale icosahedral particles surrounded by Al phase, (2) the formation of the icosahedral phase at low solute concentrations, (3) the achievement of an ultra-fine mixed state of icosahedral and approximant regions caused by the phason strain-induced approximant transition in the nanoscale icosahedral particles. The utilization of the structural effects is expected to cause high mechanical strengths combined with good ductility for other quasicrystalline alloys

    Association between the Critical Shoulder Angle and Rotator Cuff Tears in Japan

    Distinct anatomic variants of the scapula such as the critical shoulder angle (CSA) were found to be associated with rotator cuff tears (RCTs), but it is unclear whether the CSA is a risk factor in Japanese. Here we sought to determine whether the CSA is associated with RCTs in a Japanese population, and whether the CSA is a more useful parameter than the conventionally used parameters. Our RCT group and non-RCT group each consisted of 54 consecutive cases. We compared the groups’ values of CSA, the acromion index (AI), and the lateral acromion angle (LAA) obtained by X-ray imaging. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analyses were performed to determine cutoff values and the area under the curve (AUC), and to assess the odds ratio. The means of the CSA and the AI in the RCT group were significantly larger (36.3° vs. 33.7°, 0.74 vs 0.68), but the LAA did not show a significant between-group difference. The AUCs for the CSA and AI were 0.678 and 0.658, the cutoff values were 35.0° and 0.72, and the odds ratios were 3.1 and 2.5, respectively. In conclusion, the CSA was a strong risk factor compared to the AI and LAA for rotator cuff tears

    Hopong, a small town in the Salween (Thanlwin) River Basin, Myanmar, is located 35 km northeast of Inle Lake, a famous ancient lake with numerous endemic fish species. We surveyed the fish fauna of a spring pond in Hopong in 2016, 2019 and 2020 and identified 25 species. Of these, seven, including Inlecypris auropurpureus and Sawbwa resplendens, had been considered endemic to Inle Lake and at least three species were genetically unique. Eight were suspected or definite introduced species, including Oreochromis niloticus and Gambusia affinis. We were unable to identify a nemacheilid species of the genus Petruichthys, which would need a taxonomic examination. The Hopong area is being developed rapidly and, hence, it is crucial to conserve its native fish species and the freshwater ecosystems

We herein present the 2.2-3.1 Å-resolution cryo-EM structures of a Golgi-localized human Zn²⁺/H+ antiporter ZnT7 (hZnT7) in Zn²⁺-bound and unbound forms. Cryo-EM analyses show that hZnT7 exists as a dimer via tight interactions in both the cytosolic and transmembrane (TM) domains of two protomers, each of which contains a single Zn²⁺-binding site in its TM domain. hZnT7 undergoes a TM-helix rearrangement to create a negatively charged cytosolic cavity for Zn²⁺ entry in the inward-facing conformation and widens the luminal cavity for Zn²⁺ release in the outward-facing conformation. An exceptionally long cytosolic histidine-rich loop characteristic of hZnT7 binds two Zn²⁺ ions, seemingly facilitating Zn²⁺ recruitment to the TM metal transport pathway. These structures permit mechanisms of hZnT7-mediated Zn²⁺ uptake into the Golgi to be proposed

    Polycomb-Mediated Loss of miR-31 Activates NIK-Dependent NF-κB Pathway in Adult T Cell Leukemia and Other Cancers

    SummaryConstitutive NF-κB activation has causative roles in adult T cell leukemia (ATL) caused by HTLV-1 and other cancers. Here, we report a pathway involving Polycomb-mediated miRNA silencing and NF-κB activation. We determine the miRNA signatures and reveal miR-31 loss in primary ATL cells. MiR-31 negatively regulates the noncanonical NF-κB pathway by targeting NF-κB inducing kinase (NIK). Loss of miR-31 therefore triggers oncogenic signaling. In ATL cells, miR-31 level is epigenetically regulated, and aberrant upregulation of Polycomb proteins contribute to miR-31 downregulation in an epigenetic fashion, leading to activation of NF-κB and apoptosis resistance. Furthermore, this emerging circuit operates in other cancers and receptor-initiated NF-κB cascade.
