    Neurite Outgrowth-Promoting Compounds from Cockscomb Hydrolysate

    Cockscomb hydrolysate was found to have neurite outgrowth-promoting activity in PC12 cells. To investigate the neurite outgrowth-promoting compounds derived from cockscomb hydrolysate, bioassay-guided purification was carried out. Purified active fractions were obtained by liquid–liquid partition, followed by column chromatography. High-performance liquid chromatography and proton nuclear magnetic resonance analyses of the purified active fractions clarified that the main compounds are threonine, alanine, valine, and methionine. By screening for 20 kinds of amino acids, it was shown that valine and methionine, but not threonine and alanine, have neurite outgrowth-promoting activity. The results of activity evaluation of the mixture of amino acids indicated that alanine enhanced the activity of valine and that the mixture of valine and methionine showed a higher ratio of neurite formation than did each of them alone. On the other hand, dipeptides formed by valine and methionine showed weak neurite outgrowth-promoting activity. A mixture of threonine, alanine, valine, and methionine at the same concentrations as those in cockscomb hydrolysate showed neurite outgrowth-promoting activity comparable to that of cockscomb hydrolysate although threonine, alanine, valine, and methionine alone did not show activity at their concentrations in cockscomb hydrolysate. Therefore, the strong neurite outgrowth-promoting activity of cockscomb hydrolysate was considered to be due to the synergistic effect of threonine, alanine, valine, and methionine

    Pulse Timing Control of Multiple Signal Interconnections for Reduction of EMI

    This paper presents pulse timing control method to reduce electromagnetic emission from multiple signal interconnections. Pulse timing control gives intentional skew between signals. Higher order harmonics are canceled because of the difference of the phase between the signals. Using this property, pulse timing control can reduce the EMI in wide frequency range. In this paper, we show that radiated electromagnetic field from multiple signal lines reduces its intensity to the same level of the field from one line by using pulse timing control. The result of measurement shows that EMI from four differential transmission lines can be reduced more than 9 dB in the 200 MHz to 800 MHz frequency range

    Neurite Outgrowth-Promoting Activity of Compounds in PC12 Cells from Sunflower Seeds

    In the current super-aging society, the establishment of methods for prevention and treatment of Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is an urgent task. One of the causes of AD is thought to be a decrease in the revel of nerve growth factor (NGF) in the brain. Compounds showing NGF-mimicking activity and NGF-enhancing activity have been examined as possible agents for improving symptoms. In the present study, sunflower seed extract was found to have neurite outgrowth-promoting activity, which is an NGF-enhancing activity, in PC12 cells. To investigate neurite outgrowth-promoting compounds from sunflower seed extract, bioassay-guided purification was carried out. The purified active fraction was obtained by liquid-liquid partition followed by some column chromatographies. Proton nuclear magnetic resonance and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry analyses of the purified active fraction indicated that the fraction was a mixture of β-sitosterol, stigmasterol and campesterol, with β-sitosterol being the main component. Neurite outgrowth-promoting activities of β-sitosterol, stigmasterol, campesterol and cholesterol were evaluated in PC12 cells. β-Sitosterol and stigmasterol showed the strongest activity of the four sterol compounds (β-sitosterol ≈ stigmasterol > campesterol > cholesterol), and cholesterol did not show any activity. The results indicated that β-sitosterol was the major component responsible for the neurite outgrowth-promoting activity of sunflower seeds. Results of immunostaining also showed that promotion by β-sitosterol of neurite formation induced by NGF was accompanied by neurofilament expression. β-Sitosterol, which showed NGF-enhancing activity, might be a candidate ingredient in food for prevention of AD

    The wideband sleeve antenna is numerically and experimentally analyzed and its return loss characteristics are examined. This antenna is fed by the coaxial transmission line and has two sleeves. The outer conductor of the transmission line and the hollow larger conductor form the lower sleeve and the inner conductor of transmission line and the hollow larger conductor form the upper sleeve. This antenna is calculated by the electromagnetic simulator Fidelity based on the FDTD method. The return loss characteristics become wider near the resonant frequencies of two sleeves

    Molecular dynamics simulations on interaction between dislocation and Y2O3 nanocluster in FE

    For a new insight on the mechanical properties of oxide dispersion strengthened (ODS) steels from atomistic viewpoints, we have implemented molecular dynamics simulations on the interaction between Y2O3 nanocluster and dislocation in bcc Fe. There is so far no all-round interatomic potential function that can represent all the bonding state, i.e. metal, ion and covalent systems, so that we have adopted rough approximation. That is, each atom in Y2O3 is not discriminated but treated as “monatomic” pseudo-atom; and its motion is represented with the simple pairwise potential function as same as Johnson potential for Fe. The potential parameters are fitted to the energy change in the hcp infinite crystal, by using the ab-initio density functional theory(DFT) calculation for explicitly discriminated Y and O. We have set edge/screw dislocation in the centre of periodic slab cell, and approached it to the “YO” monatomic nano-cluster coherently precipitated in bcc-Fe matrix. The dislocation behavior is discussed by changing the size and periodic distance of the nano-cluster. Among the many useful results, we have obtained a conclusion that the edge dislocation is strongly trapped by YO sphere larger than the diameter of d =0 .9nm, while the screw dislocation shows various behavior, e.g. it cuts through the precipiate without remarkable resistance if the dislocation line tension is high, or it changes the slip plane leaving jogs at the position anterior to the precipiate with loose line tensio

    Autonomic disorders are common in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), but the therapeutic strategy and methods for evaluating the effects of therapy have not been established. We describe the three cases of SLE patients who developed severe autonomic disorders as demonstrated by the head-up tilt table test (HUT). All three patients were treated by intensive immunosuppressive treatments including intravenous cyclophosphamide (IVCY); their HUT results all became negative. Our cases suggest that IVCY treatment can be a good therapeutic option for severe autonomic disorders in SLE patients. The HUT is a useful objective method for the diagnosis of and the evaluation of longitudinal therapeutic effects on autonomic disorders in SLE patients with orthostatic intolerance

    Risk factors for severity of colonic diverticular hemorrhage

    Background/AimsColonic diverticular hemorrhage (DH) was a rare disease until the 1990s, and its incidence has increased rapidly since 2000 in Japan. In recent years, colonic DH has been the most frequent cause of lower gastrointestinal bleeding (LGIB). Nearly all cases of DH are mild, with the bleeding often stopping spontaneously. Some cases, however, require surgery or arterial embolization. In this study, using a cohort at Fukuoka University Chikushi Hospital, we investigated factors associated with severe colonic DH.MethodsAmong patients with LGIB who underwent colonoscopy at our hospital between 1995 and 2013, DH was identified in 273 patients. Among them, 62 patients (22.7%) were defined as having severe colonic DH according to recurrence of bleeding in a short period, and/or the necessity of transfusion, arterial embolization, or surgery. We then evaluated risk factors for severe DH among DH patients in this retrospective cohort.ResultsAmong the 273 patients with DH, use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) (odds ratio [OR], 2.801; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.164–6.742), Charlson Risk Index (CRI) ≥2 (OR, 3.336; 95% CI, 1.154–7.353), right-sided colonic DH (OR, 3.873; 95% CI, 1.554–9.653), and symptoms of cerebral hypoperfusion (such as light-headedness, dizziness, or syncope) (OR, 2.926; 95% CI, 1.310–6.535) showed an increased risk of severe DH even after controlling for other factors.ConclusionsSevere DH occurred in 23% of DH patients, and NSAID use, CRI ≥2, right-sided colonic DH, and symptoms of cerebral hypoperfusion are suggested to be predictors of severe DH

    Objective: To identify potential biomarkers to distinguish familial Mediterranean fever (FMF) from sepsis.Method: We recruited 28 patients diagnosed with typical FMF (according to the Tel Hashomer criteria), 22 patients with sepsis, and 118 age-matched controls. Serum levels of 40 cytokines were analyzed using multi-suspension cytokine array. We performed a cluster analysis of each cytokine in the FMF and sepsis groups in order to identify specific molecular networks. Multivariate classification (random forest analysis) and logistic regression analysis were used to rank the cytokines by importance and determine specific biomarkers for distinguishing FMF from sepsis.Results: Fifteen of the 40 cytokines were found to be suitable for further analysis. Levels of serum granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF), fibroblast growth factor 2, vascular endothelial growth factor, macrophage inflammatory protein-1b, and interleukin-17 were significantly elevated, whereas tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) was significantly lower in patients with FMF compared with those with sepsis. Cytokine clustering patterns differed between the two groups. Multivariate classification followed by logistic regression analysis revealed that measurement of both GM-CSF and TNF-α could distinguish FMF from sepsis with high accuracy (cut-off values for GM-CSF = 8.3 pg/mL; TNF-α = 16.3 pg/mL; sensitivity, 92.9%; specificity, 94.4%; accuracy, 93.4%).Conclusion: Determination of GM-CSF and TNF-α levels in combination may represent a biomarker for the differential diagnosis of FMF from sepsis, based on measurement of multiple cytokines
