Effects of density-dependence and sea surface temperature on interannual variation in length-at-age of chub mackerel (Scomber japonicus) in the Kuroshio-Oyashio area during 1970–1997

Annual mean fork length (FL) of the Pacific stock of chub mackerel (Scomber japonicus) was examined for the period of 1970–97. Fork length at age 0 (6 months old) was negatively correlated with year-class strength which fluctuated between 0.2 and 14 billion in number for age-0 fish. Total stock biomass was correlated with FL at age but was not a significant factor. Sea surface temperature (SST) between 38–40°N and 141–143°E during April–June was also negatively correlated with FL at age 0. A modified von Bertalanffy growth model that incorporated the effects of population density and SST on growth was well fitted to the observed FL at ages. The relative FL at age 0 for any given year class was maintained throughout the life span. The variability in size at age in the Pacific stock of chub mackerel is largely attributable to growth during the first six months after hatching

The Central Gas Systems of Early-Type Galaxies Traced by Dust Feature: Based on the HST WFPC2 Archival Images

We investigated the central gas systems of E/S0 galaxies by making use of the WFPC2 images of the Hubble Space Telescope archive. We searched the gas systems that were traced by the dust with a new method of making color excess images in F555W - F814W (V-I). Out of 25 sample galaxies, we detected gas system in 14 galaxies. The dust was newly detected in two galaxies that were thought to contain no dust based on single band, pre-refurbishment data. The full extents of the gas systems are 0.1 to 3.5 kpc, and the masses of the gas, log M(gas) [M(solar)], are 4.2 to 7.2. The AGN activity is well correlated with existence of the gas systems. None of galaxies without the gas systems show the AGN activity. On the other hand, some galaxies with the gas systems show the AGN activity; optical AGN activities are shown in 5 out of 11 galaxies of which AGNs are optically studied, and radio activities are shown in 6 out of 14 galaxies. Real-time Failure Monitoring System for High Power IGBT Under Acceleration Test Up to 500 A Stress

Real-time failure monitoring system for IGBT module was demonstrated under 500 A power cycling test. The system successfully captured internal phenomena occurred in interface regions of the device under test. Moreover, we proposed realtime failure analysis method by combining the real-time monitoring and image processing techniques. Internal Degradation Monitoring of Power Devices During Power Cycling Test

A technique to monitor internal degradation to failure of power devices in real time was proposed. Required components for this technique are (1) non-destructive inside imaging, (2) power stress control and (3) device cooling. We constructed the system with scanning acoustic tomography (SAT), DC power supply controlled by own made program and water cooling system, respectively. In the case of a TO-3P packaged MOSFET, propagation of internal degradations to failure was successfully recorded as time series data by using this system. Real Time Monitoring System for Internal Process to Failure of High Power IGBT

The usefulness of chemotherapy for control of ventricular arrhythmias secondary to cardiac metastasis of germ cell tumor

SummaryA 14-year-old boy was referred to our hospital because of treatment of germ cell tumor in the anterior mediastinum. Computerized tomographic (CT) scan of the chest and abdomen revealed a large tumor in the anterior mediastinum and multiple metastatic tumors in the lung, liver, kidney, pancreas, and heart. There was a mass in the interventricular septum. A 24-h Holter monitor showed sinus rhythm with 358 premature ventricular complexes (VPC) and 30 ventricular runs including 9 non-sustained ventricular tachycardias per day. The patient was treated with 4 cycles of chemotherapy with good response. Approximately 12 weeks after the start of the chemotherapy, serial CT scan showed regression of the tumors in the anterior mediastinum, lung, and kidney, and disappearance of the tumors in the liver, pancreas, and heart. Repeat Holter monitor showed that VPC and ventricular runs disappeared completely. The chemotherapy for the germ cell tumor was very useful for ventricular arrhythmias secondary to cardiac metastasis of the tumor

Temperature Distribution Imaging inside Power Devices by Real-Time Simulation

We propose an imaging method of temperature dis-tribution inside a power device in real-time. The imaging system was constructed by integrating a real-time moni-toring and a real-time simulation. The surface tempera-tures of a device under test (DUT) is monitored by in-frared cameras and a high speed temperature simulator calculates temperature distribution inside the DUT by using the surface temperatures as boundary conditions.
