Hosseini’s The Kite Runner: Some Critical Surveys, Impacts and Suggestions

    Get PDF
Khaled Hossieni’s The Kite Runner (2003) is a multi-dimensional novel, which gives a variety of material for research from diverse angles. The critics and reviewers have explored the thematic, structural, political, denominational and strategic understanding of Afghanistan in their reviews. Their focus on ethnic through political to religious conflicts is revealed through socio-cultural dynamics of the characters. This study aims at focusing on the existing literature on the novel in such a way as to highlight its symbolic/ psychological suggestiveness. The in-depth analysis of the study shows that both the social and psychological sides of the humans are juxtaposed. If one side is balanced, the other will be developed and vice versa. Hence, the fundamental finding of the paper shows that prejudice, lack of cooperation, evils and stereotypes are caused by the psychological imbalance which can be corrected if one works on self-examination, self-criticism and self-improvement. Accidental phosphine gas poisoning with fatal myocardial dysfunction in two families

    Get PDF
ABSTRACT Aluminum phosphide is commonly used as a rodenticide and insecticide and is one of the most fatal poisons. The active ingredient is Phosphine gas which inhibits cytochrome oxidase and cellular oxygen utilization. The clinical symptoms are due to multiorgan involvement including cardiac toxicity which is the most common cause of mortality. Severity of clinical manifestations depends upon the amount of the gas to which a person is exposed. There is no specific antidote available. High index of suspicion and early aggressive treatment is the key to success. We report 2 cases of aluminum phosphide toxicity in 2 families due to incidental exposure after fumigation

The effect of Kalongi (Nigella sativa, L.) seeds was studied on the performance of layers and cholesterol contents of their egg-yolks. A total of 96 White-Leghorn birds of 40 weeks of age and at the egg laying stage were randomly divided into 12 experimental units, eight birds in each unit. These units were randomly allotted to four treatments in such a way that each treatment received 3 experimental units. Four test rations were prepared by supplementing a commercial layer-ration with powdered Kalongi seeds at the rates of 0.0, 0.5, 1.0 and 1.5%. Effects of feeding these rations on feed intake, egg production, egg mass, egg shell thickness, Haugh unit, yolk index, blood spots, meat spots and total cholesterol in eggs were determined after a period of 12 weeks. Blood samples of the two birds selected at random from each replicate were taken at 0, 6 and 12 weeks. The serum obtained from these samples was analyzed for total cholesterol, low-density lipoproteins, high-density lipoproteins and triglycerides. Data on feed intake, feed refused and egg production were used to calculate the feed conversion ratio. Results showed that Nigella sativa seeds significantly (P0.05) change in yolk index, blood and meat spots. The Nigella sativa seeds also significantly (P0,05) u odnosu na indeks žumanjka te prisutnost krvnih i mesnih mrlja. U jaja nesilica hranjenih usitnjenim sjemenkama crnjike zabilježena je značajno manja količina (P<0,05) kolesterola. Ustanovljene su i niže razine serumskih triglicerida, lipoproteina niske gustoće i ukupnog kolesterola, dok je razina loipoproteina visoke gustoće bila povišena dodavanjem komercijalne hrane sa sjemenkama crnjike

Three pregnancies with mechanical heart valve and no follow-up in 10 years

Anticoagulation and proper INR (International Normalized Ratio) monitoring is essential for patients having mechanical heart valves; it is vital in these patients in order to prevent lethal complications such as valve thrombosis and systemic embolism. In pregnancy, it becomes even more important as pregnancy itself is a hypercoagulable state. This report describes a female patient having undergone mitral valve replacement with a Starr Edward metallic prosthesis. She came back to the operating surgeon after 10 years of valve replacement with a history of three uneventful healthy deliveries and no follow-up and INR monitoring during this period

320-326Kanocha is the dried seeds of Phyllanthus maderaspatensis of family Phyllanthaceae. It has been long utilising in Unani system of medicine to cure many ailments including genitourinary infectious diseases. In the current investigation, the aqueous, alcoholic and hydroalcoholic extracts of Kanocha seeds were screened for their antibacterial actions against both gram-positive (Streptococcus mutans, Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus epidermidis, Streptococcus pyogenes, Corynebacterium xerosis and Bacillus cereus) and gram-negative (Klebsiella pneumoniae, Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Proteus vulgaris) bacterial strains compared with the standard Drug: Ciprofloxacin (SD060) 5 µg/disk for gram-positive bacterial strains and Gentamicin (SD016) 10 µg/disk for gram-negative bacterial strains using Zone of Inhibition (ZOI) with the help of Agar well method and minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) & minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) with the help of Nutrient Broth method. The data was analysed using Gpad INSTAT programming, one-way ANOVA and post-test Bonferroni. Alcoholic and hydroalcoholic extract showed significant antibacterial activity than the aqueous extract but not up to the mark as compared to standard group indicating that the alcoholic and hydroalcoholic extract has the capability of extracting more phytochemicals than aqueous extract which are responsible for their antibacterial activity. It could be concluded that the present drug possesses antibacterial property

Two hundred intestines pieces (100 each of broilers and layers) of about 8 cm length were collected from the poultry sale shops in Faisalabad city. These pieces were opened, scratched and vigorously shaken into sterilized normal saline, the suspension was centrifuged and supernatants were subjected to spot haemagglutination with 2% chicken RBC’s. Out of 200 samples, 95% samples of layers and 75% of the broilers showed positive spot haemagglutination. Micro haemagglutination inhibition with Newcastle disease (ND) antiserum revealed, 85 and 66 samples positive in layers and broilers respectively. A total of 10% samples of the layers and 9% of the broilers were not inhibited by ND antiserum suggesting other HA viruses. A total of 20 samples were used to isolate the virus in embryonated eggs (allantoic route). These isolates were confirmed as NDV by haemagglutination inhibition test. Five isolates were tested for intracerebral pathogenicity index (ICPI) in day old chicks. The ICPI values obtained were 0.28, 0.31, 0.37, 0.38 and 0.46. The isolates were found to be lentogenic
