Better food consumption patterns are indications of sustainable agriculture and rural development in Nigeria. This study examined food consumption patterns of adult rural dwellers in Oluyole Local Government Area of Oyo State. A sample of 150 rural dwellers was selected through multi-stage sampling procedure. Rural dwellers main source of water supply is rain (63.40%), while their major source of cooking energy is firewood. Seventy-three percent of the rural dwellers eat two main meals in a day. Findings also revealed that they consume food items from cereals and products of root tubers more than three times in a week. Half of the respondents (53.3%) do not consume food items from meat and dairy products at all. Rural dwellers source of water supply and type of cooking energy were significantly related to their level of food consumption patters. Also primary occupation (÷2 = 11.75; p = 0.02), marital status (÷2 = 2.09; p = 0.02), family size (÷2 = 0.68; p = 0.02), tribe (÷2 = 0.50; p = 0.02), sources of information (÷2 = 12.08; p = 0.02) and type of cooking energy (÷2 = 10.07; p = o.03) were significantly related to their type of food consumption patterns. Uninterestingly, these rural dwellers consume food items that are starchy based than body building nutrients. Nutrition education should be emphasized in government policies for rural development and better food consumption patterns. The home economics extension workers should communicate and provide awareness to the rural dwellers on the importance of forming adequate food consumption patterns

The study was conducted to examine the relationships between seed vigour traits and field performancein 24 interspecific rice (Oryza sativa L.) genotypes specifically for Africa. Seeds of these genotypeswere evaluated in the late cropping season of 2003 and early cropping season of year 2004 inthe laboratory for seed vigour traits. Field performances were evaluated at the Teaching and ResearchFarm, University of Agriculture, Abeokuta, Nigeria for field performance traits. Data were collectedfrom the laboratory studies on six seed vigour traits while seven performance traits were assessed onthe field. The data were subjected to Pearson’s correlation to compute correlation coefficient (r) andstep-wise multiple regression analysis to determine percentage contribution of each trait to field emergence. The results of correlation analyses in the 2003, 2004 and across the two seasons revealed thatstandard germination, energy of germination, seedling vigour index-11, seedling vigour index-1 andspeed of germination index exhibited significant positive relationships with field emergence, seedlingestablishment, plant height, seedling dry weight and seed yield/plant. 100- seed weight significantcorrelation with plant height. From these results, all the laboratory seed vigour traits examined except100 seed weight were identified to be good predictors of field performance in NERICA rice. Regressionanalysis ranked speed of germination index as the major contributor to field emergence, accountingfor 58% of the total variation. Also, seedling establishment, standard germination and field emergencewere identified as the major contributors to seed yield/plant, accounting for 79, 77 and 66% ofthe total variation in seed yield/plant. Hence, prediction of field emergence and seed yield of NERICArice genotypes from seed vigour traits in the laboratory is possible and was effective

INTRODUCTION: Squamous cell carcinoma of the anus is a common cancer among sexual minority men, especially HIV-positive sexual minority men; however, there is no evidenced-based national screening protocol for detection of anal precancers. Our objective is to determine compliance with annual anal canal self-sampling or clinician-sampling for human papillomavirus (HPV) DNA. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: This is a prospective, randomised, two-arm clinical study to evaluate compliance with annual home-based versus clinic-based HPV DNA screening of anal canal exfoliated cells. The setting is primary care community-based clinics. Recruitment is ongoing for 400 HIV-positive and HIV-negative sexual minority men and transgender persons, aged >25 years, English or Spanish speaking, no current use of anticoagulants other than nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and no prior diagnosis of anal cancer. Participants are randomised to either receive a swab in the mail for home-based collection of an anal canal specimen at 0 and 12 months (arm 1) or attend a clinic for clinician collection of an anal canal specimen at 0 and 12 months (arm 2). Persons will receive clinic-based Digital Anal Rectal Examinations and high-resolution anoscopy-directed biopsy to assess precancerous lesions, stratified by study arm. Anal exfoliated cells collected in the study are assessed for high-risk HPV persistence and host/viral methylation. The primary analysis will use the intention-to-treat principle to compare the proportion of those who comply with 0-month and 12-month sampling in the home-based and clinic-based arms. The a priori hypothesis is that a majority of persons will comply with annual screening with increased compliance among persons in the home-based arm versus clinic-based arm. ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION: The study has been approved by the Medical College of Wisconsin Human Protections Committee. Results will be disseminated to communities where recruitment occurred and through peer-reviewed literature and conferences. TRIAL REGISTRATION NUMBER: NCT03489707
