    Non-geometric veering triangulations

Recently, Ian Agol introduced a class of "veering" ideal triangulations for mapping tori of pseudo-Anosov homeomorphisms of surfaces punctured along the singular points. These triangulations have very special combinatorial properties, and Agol asked if these are "geometric", i.e. realised in the complete hyperbolic metric with all tetrahedra positively oriented. This paper describes a computer program Veering, building on the program Trains by Toby Hall, for generating these triangulations starting from a description of the homeomorphism as a product of Dehn twists. Using this we obtain the first examples of non-geometric veering triangulations; the smallest example we have found is a triangulation with 13 tetrahedra

This paper reviews the current experimental program envisaged with the future CERN neutrino beam called CNGS. Two detectors, OPERA and ICARUS, are under preparation and should investigate the neutrino properties coming from the CNGS to shed light on neutrino oscillation physics.Comment: Invited talk at the Seventh International Workshop on Tau Lepton Physics (TAU02), Santa Cruz, CA, USA, Sept 2002, 9 pages, LaTex, 9 eps figures. For networked systems, especially large-scale systems such as multiagent systems and systems over sensor networks, the complexities are inevitably enhanced in terms of their degrees or intensities because of the usage of the communication networks. Therefore, it would be interesting to (1) examine how this kind of network-enhanced complexities affects the control or filtering performance; and (2) develop some suitable approaches for controller/filter design problems. In this paper, we aim to survey some recent advances on the performance analysis and synthesis with three sorts of fashionable network-enhanced complexities, namely, fading measurements, event-triggered mechanisms, and attack behaviors of adversaries. First, these three kinds of complexities are introduced in detail according to their engineering backgrounds, dynamical characteristic, and modelling techniques. Then, the developments of the performance analysis and synthesis issues for various networked systems are systematically reviewed. Furthermore, some challenges are illustrated by using a thorough literature review and some possible future research directions are highlighted. This work was supported in part by the National Natural Science Foundation of China under Grants 61134009, 61329301, 61203139, 61374127, and 61374010, the Royal Society of the UK, and the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation of Germany

Proof of concept of diffuse optical tomography using time-of-flight range imaging cameras

    Get PDF
Diffuse optical tomography is an optical technique to create 3-dimensional images of the inside of highly scattering material. Research groups around the world have been developing imaging systems using various source-detector arrangements to determine optical properties of biological tissue with a focus on medical applications. In this paper we investigate whether a range imaging camera can be used as a detector array. We used time-of-flight range imaging cameras instead of the conventional source-detector array used by others. The results provided in this paper show reconstructed images of absorption and reduced scattering of an object submerged in a tissue simulating phantom. Using the ranging camera XZ422 Demonstrator and the NIRFAST software package, we reconstructed 2D images of a 6 mm metal rod submerged in the centre of a 5 cm deep tank filled with 1% IntralipidTM. We have shown for the first time that range imaging cameras can replace the traditional detectors in diffuse optical tomography

Dual-band WLAN Antenna Array with Integrated Bandpass Filters for Harmonic Suppression

    Get PDF
This paper presents the design and results of a dual-band antenna array integrated with bandpass filters. The array has a 1×2 configuration. The two bands of the array correspond to the two WLAN bands of 2.4 GHz and 5.8 GHz. Other than the two main bands, the standalone array exhibits spurious harmonics at various other frequencies. For the suppression of these harmonics, the array is integrated with two bandpass filters, centered at 2.4 GHz and 5.8 GHz. The filtering array was simulated and fabricated. Measured results show dual-bands at 2.4 GHz and 5.8 GHz at a return loss of more than 30 dB and also a successful full suppression of the spurious harmonic
