BACKGROUND: Sexual health problems are common among different health conditions such as cancer, diabetes mellitus and heart diseases. Little has been published on why and what factors behind hesitance to seek help and hiding the problem. METHODS: The study explored the extent to which men suffering from sexual dysfunction are willing to discuss their sexual concerns and care needs with nurses. A qualitative exploratory approach was used to explore men’s perspectives on nurses’ role in providing men’s sexual healthcare in Jordan. Data were collected through semi-structural interviews from 16 men with sexual health problems secondary to chronic health conditions. RESULTS: Four themes were derived from the data; men’s perceptions about sexual healthcare, ability of men to seek help from nurses, barriers to seeking help, and desired sources for help. Men reported that they would not seek help from nurses; they preferred using other sources, including internet, friends and other men with similar experiences. CONCLUSIONS and discussion: closed social and family structure limited men’s willingness to seek help for their sexual problems in Jordan leaving them untreated, which might then threaten their general health and wellbeing. RELEVANCE TO CLINICAL PRACTICE: Nursing is a profession that deals with human as a whole and the sexual health care was not part of nurses’ daily care for men. Therefore, this study added a view to nurses and health care professionals to consider sexual health care as part of their sexual health care for men. This might be through developing a multidisciplinary service for men. KEY WORDS: Sexual healthcare, Men’s health, Nurses, Jordan

The aim of this research is to propose pedagogical ideas for improving the quality of teaching / learning of French language / culture in the Jordanian university context. To do so, we will focus on the importance of cultural and intercultural aspects in acquiring a foreign language communication skill. We will then emphasize on clarifying the terms of culture, civilization and interculturality, often confused by foreign language teachers. Subsequently, we will discuss the role of interculturality in communication with others and the role of cultural competence in teaching FFL. The study ends with a number of pedagogical reflections based on our personal experiences and the results of two questionnaires carried out among Jordanian teachers and learners

Migration experiences of Jordanian nurses working in the UK

Using a qualitative biographic approach, data about migrant nurses was collected by survey and semi-structured interviews. The UK Nursing and Midwifery Council database was accessed to identify Jordanian migrant nurses, with the population broadened by snowball sampling. In total 52 nurses responded to demographic survey. A subsample of 13 nurses was interviewed in person and 12 were interviewed by telephone. Three key themes were identified. First, Jordanian nurses have challenged the 'status quo' and taken a decision to move to the UK, in response to the push or pull of work conditions, educational opportunities, career development, wages, travel and adventure. Second, 'source to host country: disconnecting and connecting' shows that Jordanian nurses disconnected many relations in Jordan or the Gulf States when they moved and established additional work and social relations in the UK. Third 'away from home: professional transformation and routes' diversion' reported on the shifting in Jordanian nurses' professional and personal life in the UK. This thesis argues that while migration theories focus on economics, using a case study of nursing and incorporating the professional and personal helps identify future migration movement.EThOS - Electronic Theses Online ServiceGBUnited Kingdo

Migration experiences of Jordanian nurses working in the UK

Background. Many nurses have migrated to the United Kingdom (UK) as a result of workforce shortages in the health care system. This is part of worldwide shortages, which creates international mobility for professionals, in health and other sectors, a migration, which has consequences for source and host countries. Literature on migration is limited by the lack of accurate data and rigorous studies, but a range of theoretical frameworks address issues explaining push and pull factors, and consequences of migration for individuals. Few studies currently report on the experience of migrant nurses before, during, and after transition. Aim. This study examines the personal and professional experiences of Jordanian nurses migration to the UK. Design and methods. Using a qualitative biographic approach, data about migrant nurses was collected by survey and semi-structured interviews. The UK Nursing and Midwifery Council database was accessed to identify Jordanian migrant nurses, with the population broadened by snowball sampling. The objective of this study is to suggest strategies for developing reading/comprehension skills of narrative texts among Arabic-speaking learners in French as a Foreign Language (FFL) classroom. To achieve this goal, we approach the competence of reading-comprehension and we define these two terms, reading and comprehension. We also examine the principles of textual linguistics and the notion of narrative sequence. We then present our research context and we identify the difficulties encountered by our learners when reading-understanding narrative sequences. Finally, we develop and implement a number of didactic activities with our learners using a narrative text.

This study aims at highlighting the importance of teaching grammar in French as a foreign language class and to discuss the place given to grammar in the different methodological approaches. At the same time, the study attempts to examine the results of a survey of Jordanian students learning French in an academic context. The results of the study reveal that learners have serious difficulties that affect their motivation and their mastery of oral and written forms of French. This requires the use of dynamic and motivating activities that involve more learners in their learning process. The study concludes with a proposition including lines of reflection and didactic solutions that can contribute to the improvement of teaching/ learning French in Jordan

In this study, we investigated the correlates of aggression among consumers with mental illness within two psychiatric hospitals in Jordan. This was a descriptive, cross sectional study carried out by auditing consumers\u27 medical records in regards to incidents of aggression before and during admission. Approval was gained from 203 next of kins to review the consumers\u27 medical records. Results from this case analysis, found the prevalence of aggressive behaviours among psychiatric inpatient\u27s in Jordan to be 23.6%, the most common form of aggression was consumer to consumer and that the aggressive act was more likely to be perpetrated by younger consumers. Such findings contribute to the discourse about aggression and understanding who and what causes aggression can go toward identify strategies for early intervention and management. After all, mental health units should be places of safety, that is, an asylum, and everyone who enters that environment deserves to be safe

Proton Quantum Tunneling: Influence and Relevance to Acidosis-Induced Cardiac Arrhythmias/Cardiac Arrest

    No full text
Acidosis and its associated pathologies predispose patients to develop cardiac arrhythmias and even cardiac arrest. These arrhythmias are assumed to be the result of membrane depolarization, however, the exact mechanism of depolarization during acidosis is not well defined. In our study, the model of quantum tunneling of protons is used to explain the membrane depolarization that occurs during acidosis. It is found that protons can tunnel through closed activation and inactivation gates of voltage-gated sodium channels Nav1.5 that are present in the membrane of cardiac cells. The quantum tunneling of protons results in quantum conductance, which is evaluated to assess its effect on membrane potential. The quantum conductance of extracellular protons is higher than that of intracellular protons. This predicts an inward quantum current of protons through the closed sodium channels. Additionally, the values of quantum conductance are influential and can depolarize the membrane potential according to the quantum version of the GHK equation. The quantum mechanism of depolarization is distinct from other mechanisms because the quantum model suggests that protons can directly depolarize the membrane potential, and not only through indirect effects as proposed by other mechanisms in the literature. Understanding the pathophysiology of arrhythmias mediated by depolarization during acidosis is crucial to treat and control them and to improve the overall clinical outcomes of patients
