    Get PDF
The Orang Asli economically is the most marginalized ethnic group in Malaysia. This is due to their low education attainment, heavy dependence on subsistence agriculture and their locations in the interior of the country. The paper evaluates the effectiveness of this program, specifically the success and failure of each program. The methodologies are a review of literature that has documented resettlement of Orang Asli as well as works that have been done by the authors on some resettlement cases in Peninsular Malaysia. It synthesises and summarises these works to determine the effectiveness of the resettlement and redevelopment program of Orang Asli.eISSN: 2398-4287© 2019. The Authors. Primary rainforest as an old heritage has become widely known because of its old natural, beautiful setting and the richest of its biodiversity. A nature-based trail is a natural path in the rainforest as a medium to explore the uniqueness of the natural beauty assets and the biodiversity of the forest. The development of the nature-based trail settings in a primary rainforest gives the impact towards visitor’s experience indirectly to appreciate the biodiversity. Recreation Opportunity Spectrum (ROS) parameters will be used to interpret the effectiveness of the trail. The sustainability of natural resources becomes a major concern towards the management and conservation of the biodiversity. Keywords: Biodiversity; heritage; rainforest; ROS parameterISSN: 2398-4287© 2017. Get PDF
Georgetown World Heritage Site (GWHS) is known as a potpourri of various ethnic groups who have settled in the area during various periods of the past 300 years. Chinese are the majority although Muslims (Malays) were earliest settlers and once the majority. This paper analyzes the socio-economic and cultural sustainability of the Muslim community within the GWHS relying on historical records and current situation. Areas around masjid kapitan Kling and masjid Melayu are considered as the Muslim enclave. While the Indians Muslims are doing rather well socio-economically, the same cannot be said of the Malays. The number of Malays is very low and Malay business owners in the area tend to live outside the GWHS. The decline of the Muslim population has grave implications to the socio-economic and cultural sustainability of the Muslims, especially the Malays

This paper evaluates the impacts of this resettlement to the Orang Asli 40 years later. Findings show that the after initial problems in the first decade, the Orang Asli are now very satisfied in their new community, especially in terms of physical conditions and improved income

    Get PDF
It is considerably challenging task to have a buffer zone (BZ) around protected areas (PA) in the urban area due to the conflict of interest between conservation and development. There is a need for ‘win-win situation’. This research is to identify the impact of a potential buffer zone on human and conservation of natural environment which derived from the stakeholders’ understanding. In-depth interviews with stakeholders of the PA and their surroundings were carried out. The findings suggested that a ‘dual purpose’ BZ – environmental conservation and socio-economic benefits are suitable for the FRIM area. Keywords:; Buffer Zone Concept; Protected Areas; Urban Setting; FRIM, MalaysiaISSN: 2398-4287© 2017.
