Carbon dioxide (CO2) contributes more than 60% towards global warming especially from the fossil-fuel burning activity. Hence, technologies such as carbon capture storage and utilization was introduced. Among the carbon capture technologies, adsorption by porous materials have been used as adsorbent material. Ceria has been chosen in this study. Commercial ceria has several drawbacks such as less porosity and surface area which reduce the availability of CO2 adsorption site. The objective of this study is to prepare a mesoporous ceria nanoparticles (MCN) via hydrothermal and sol-gel methods. 3-aminopropyltrimethoxysilane (APTMS) was used in order to improve the CO2 capture performance. The characterization of all samples were carried out by nitrogen adsorption-desorption isotherm, X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), thermogravimetric analysis, pyrrole and CO2 adsorbed FTIR spectroscopy. The performance of the samples were tested by CO2 adsorption at pressure range between 6-900 mmHg and 298 K. The preparation parameters were determined via hydrothermal method at calcination temperature of 673 K, pH 9 and ceria/surfactant ratio 2. These parameters were then applied to sol-gel method and the prepared mesoporous adsorbent produced high surface area (76.0 m2 g-1), large pore size (0.100 cm3 g-1), large pore volume (5.3 nm) and high CO2 uptake (213.8 prnol g-1). The adsorbent also shows high thermal stability because it can retain up to 1171 K. The proposed CO2 adsorption mechanism was elucidated from the CO2 adsorbed FTIR spectroscopy. For MCN-2S, CO2 was adsorbed onto oxygen basic, oxygen vacancy and hydroxyl site on MCN which formed monodentate, bidentate, polydentate and hydrogen carbonate. In addition to these carbonate species, the adsorption of CO2 on APTMS/MCN-2S also occurred through the formation of carbamate species. Low CO2 adsorbed on the APTMS/MCN-2S might be due to the utilization of available oxygen basic sites by APTMS molecules. This study exhibited that MCN adsorbent prepared by sol-gel method showed a potential to be applied at industrial scale due to the rapid preparation method, high thermal stability and high CO2 uptake capacity

    Get PDF
Recently there is a rapid growth in research and innovation in the natural fiber composites area. This is because natural fiber gives some advantages compared to other synthetic fibers such as low density, environmental friendly, low cost and good mechanical properties. The purpose of this project is to study the mechanical behaviour of palas leaf reinforced composite. The experiments of tensile, impact and flexural tests were carried out on composites made by reinforced palas leaf or licuala grandis as its scientific name as a new natural fiber into polypropylene homopolymer resin matrix. All of the tests were carried out according to the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) standard. This project will focus on the matrix-fiber compositions which are, 80/20, 70/30 and 60/40. These three composition will also be compared with a neat polypropylene. There are two processes involved to produce this composite which are compounding process and injection moulding process. The palas leaf and polypropylene will be mixed together by using the compounding process and will produce a pellet size composite. This pellet will then put into the injection moulding process to produce a desired shape of composite such as dog-bone shape. The tensile, impact and flexural test will be carried out once the injection moulding process is done

CHARACTERIZATION OF WAXY COOLED CRUDE OIL USING ELECTRICAL RESISTANCE TOMOGRAPHY (ERT)

    Get PDF
Electrical resistance tomography (ERT) is one of the most common, widely implemented and promising method in production cross-sectional image displaying the distribution of electrical conductivity for a particular multiphase flow. The method includes measurement of electrical resistance characteristics converting it to image mixtures when the continuous phase is conductive. ERT is well suited in monitoring gas-liquid flow, whereby the liquid is in a continuous phase whereas the gas is in a disperse phase. Other type of tomography sensors which involves measurement of electrical characteristics includes electrical capacitance tomography (ECT), electromagnetic tomography (EMT) and electrical impedance tomography (EIT). The mentioned electrical tomographies are safe without any radiation hazard and low cost comparing to nuclear based methods. ERT has the advantage among others for its excellent time resolution produced from very fast measurements of electrical resistance. Multiphase flow is of great importance in various industrial processes. As the most important characteristic of a multiphase flow, the flow regime not only characterizes the flow condition in an explicit way, but also determines the measurement model in each measuring method. The main focus for this project is to implement ERT for detection and measurement of gas void fractions in waxy cooled crude oil. Measurement of void fraction of two-phase flows remains a challenging area. Thus, the report which consists of an introduction, problem statement, objectives, literature review and methodology is used to get a better understanding, set targets and solve the issues in hand
