Localization of gauge fields in a tachyonic de Sitter thick braneworld

    Get PDF
In this work we show that universal gauge vector fields can be localized on the recently proposed 5D thick tachyonic braneworld which involves a de Sitter cosmological background induced on the 3-brane. Namely, by performing a suitable decomposition of the vector field, the resulting 4D effective action corresponds to a massive gauge field, while the profile along the extra dimension obeys a Schroedinger-like equation with a Poeschl-Teller potential. It turns out that the massless zero mode of the gauge field is bound to the expanding 3-brane and allows us to recover the standard 4D electromagnetic phenomena of our world. Moreover, this zero mode is separated from the continuum of Kaluza-Klein (KK) modes by a mass gap determined by the scale of the expansion parameter. We also were able to analytically solve the corresponding Schroedinger-like equation for arbitrary mass, showing that KK massive modes asymptotically behave like plane waves as expected.Comment: 7 pages in latex, no figure

Strong flavour changing effective operator contributions to single top quark production

We study the effects of dimension six effective operators on the production of single top quarks at the LHC. The operator set considered includes terms with effective gluon interactions and four-fermion terms. Analytic expressions for the several partonic cross sections of single top production will be presented, as well as the results of their integration on the parton density functions.Comment: 20 pages, 7 fig

Improving the Evolutionary Coding for Machine Learning Tasks

    Get PDF
The most influential factors in the quality of the solutions found by an evolutionary algorithm are a correct coding of the search space and an appropriate evaluation function of the potential solutions. The coding of the search space for the obtaining of decision rules is approached, i.e., the representation of the individuals of the genetic population. Two new methods for encoding discrete and continuous attributes are presented. Our “natural coding” uses one gene per attribute (continuous or discrete) leading to a reduction in the search space. Genetic operators for this approached natural coding are formally described and the reduction of the size of the search space is analysed for several databases from the UCI machine learning repository.Comisión Interministerial de Ciencia y Tecnología TIC1143–C03–0

Transfer of Toxic Algal Substances in Marine Food Chains

    Get PDF
Alcoholic and ether extracts of obligate herbivores, omnivores, and detritus feeders common on Caulerpa or in its communities were found, via comparative, and sometimes quantitative, thin-layer chromatography, to contain varying amounts of caulerpicin, caulerpin, palmitic acid, and ß-sitosterol or to lack them. Cerithium and soft corals, which may be either omnivores or carnivores, on occasion contain caulerpicin. The crustacean detritus feeders did not seem to preserve either caulerpicin or caulerpin. It seems well demonstrated that caulerpicin and caulerpin, which, as produced by Caulerpa, are physiologically active and toxic to rats and mice, respectively, are transferred along the food chains and concentrated in the process at least in some herbivores

Reclusão infantil ou liberdade sem mães: Vantagens e desvantagens

    Get PDF
Given the scarcity of studies about motherhood in reclusion, this research tries to understand the advantages and disadvantages of child imprisonment, both for children and for the inmates. Therefore, this study includes a random sample of ten inmates of Estabelecimento Prisional Especial de Santa Cruz do Bispo, divided into two groups: women with children in the prison (n = 5) and women with child in the outside (n = 5). Data were collected using semi-structured interviews and were qualitatively analyzed with resource of the inductive thematic analysis. The speeches showed that the inmates consider the child imprisonment based on their own welfare and the welfare of the children, besides, they manifested that the feelings experienced during the separation of the mother and the child were negative and painful, both for the child and the mother. Speeches also show that the inmates perceive the structural conditions, the prison services and support available for the exercise of motherhood and for the children welfare as being short of their expectations, expressing some discontent

The Public-Private Relationship within the Framework of the new Social Services Law (2009) in Aragon

The Aragon Institute of Social Services, by means of the new Social Services Law passed during the last term in Aragon, implemented a new way of providing for the positions established by the creation of new rights in the benefits listing that the Social Services system will require in the coming years. It seeks to align the preservation of a strong sense of public responsibility with the achievement of participation of any private initiatives, both social and commercial, within the Autonomous Community who desire it. For this, a new logistical organization of the issue has been set up, by means of a framework agreement which provides improvements for all involved in the system: citizens, agencies, enterprises and Administration

A Tool to Obtain a Hierarchical Qualitative Rules from Quantitative Data

    Get PDF
A tool to obtain a classifier system from labelled databases is presented. The result is a hierarchical set of rules to divide the space in n-orthohedrons. This hierarchy means that obtained rules must be applied in specific order, that is, an example will be classify by i-rule only if it isn't matched the conditions of the i-1 preceding rules. It is used a genetic algorithm with real codification as searching method. Logically, computation time will be greater than other systems like C4.5, but it will provide flexibility to the user because it is always possible to produce rules set with 0% of error rate and, from here, to relax the error rate for having less rules. Afterwards, a qualitative approach is made to obtain a linguistic rule set. Finally, several results are summarized in section 4

Mass gap for gravity localized on Weyl thick branes

We study the properties of a previously found family of thick brane configurations in a pure geometric Weyl integrable 5D space time, a non-Riemannian generalization of Kaluza-Klein (KK) theory involving a geometric scalar field. Thus the 5D theory describes gravity coupled to a self-interacting scalar field which gives rise to the structure of the thick branes. Analyzing the graviton spectrum for this class of models, we find that a particularly interesting situation arises for a special case in which the 4D graviton is separated from the KK gravitons by a mass gap. The corresponding effective Schroedinger equation has a modified Poeschl-Teller potential and can be solved exactly. Apart from the massless 4D graviton, it contains one massive KK bound state, and the continuum spectrum of delocalized KK modes. We discuss the mass hierarchy problem, and explicitly compute the corrections to Newton's law in the thin brane limit.Comment: 6 pages in Revtex, no figures, journal version, significately revised and extende

Evolutionary techniques applied to the optimal short-term scheduling of the electrical energy production

    Get PDF
This paper presents an evolutionary technique applied to the optimal short-term scheduling (24 h) of the electric energy production. The equations that define the problem lead to a non-convex non-linear programming problem with a high number of continuous and discrete variables. Consequently, the resolution of the problem based on combinatorial methods is rather hard. The required heuristics, introduced to assure the feasibility of the constraints, are analyzed, along with a brief description of the proposed genetic algorithm (GA). The GA is used to compute the optimal on/off status of thermal units and the fitness function is obtained by solving a quadratic programming problem by means of a standard non-linear Interior Point (IP) method. The results from real-world cases based on the Spanish power system are reported, which show the good performance of the proposed algorithm, taking into account the complexity and dimensionality of the problem. Finally, an IP algorithm is adapted to deal with discrete variables that appear in this problem and the obtained results are compared with that of the proposed GA.Ministerio de Ciencia y Tecnología TIN2004-00159Junta de Andalucia ACPAI-2003/032Junta de Andalucia P05-TIC-0053
