Interaction effects and transport properties of Pt capped Co nanoparticles
We studied the magnetic and transport properties of Co nanoparticles (NPs)
being capped with varying amounts of Pt. Beside field and temperature dependent
magnetization measurements we performed delta-M measurements to study the
magnetic interactions between the Co NPs. We observe a transition from
demagnetizing towards magnetizing interactions between the particles for an
increasing amount of Pt capping. Resistivity measurements show a crossover from
giant magnetoresistance towards anisotropic magnetoresistance
Ultrasonic triggering of giant magnetocaloric effect in MnAs thin films
Mechanical control of magnetic properties in magnetostrictive thin films
offers the unexplored opportunity to employ surface wave acoustics in such a
way that acoustic triggers dynamic magnetic effects. The strain-induced
modulation of the magnetic anisotropy can play the role of a high frequency
varying effective magnetic field leading to ultrasonic tuning of electronic and
magnetic properties of nanostructured materials, eventually integrated in
semiconductor technology. Here, we report about the opportunity to employ
surface acoustic waves to trigger magnetocaloric effect in
MnAs(100nm)/GaAs(001) thin films. During the MnAs magnetostructural phase
transition, in an interval range around room temperature (0{\deg}C -
60{\deg}C), ultrasonic waves (170 MHz) are strongly attenuated by the phase
coexistence (up to 150 dB/cm). We show that the giant magnetocaloric effect of
MnAs is responsible of the observed phenomenon. By a simple anelastic model we
describe the temperature and the external magnetic field dependence of such a
huge ultrasound attenuation. Strain-manipulation of the magnetocaloric effect
could be a further interesting route for dynamic and static caloritronics and
spintronics applications in semiconductor technology
The milliarcsecond-scale jet of PKS 0735+178 during quiescence
We present polarimetric 5 GHz to 43 GHz VLBI observations of the BL Lacertae
object PKS 0735+178, spanning March 1996 to May 2000. Comparison with previous
and later observations suggests that the overall kinematic and structural
properties of the jet are greatly influenced by its activity. Time intervals of
enhanced activity, as reported before 1993 and after 2000 by other studies, are
followed by highly superluminal motion along a rectilinear jet. In contrast the
less active state in which we performed our observations, shows subluminal or
slow superluminal jet features propagating through a twisted jet with two sharp
bends of about 90 deg. within the innermost three-milliarcsecond jet structure.
Proper motion estimates from the data presented here allow us to constrain the
jet viewing angle to values < 9 deg., and the bulk Lorentz factor to be between
2 and 4.Comment: 11 pages, 12 figures. Accepted for publication in A&
Evolution of EEG motor rhythms after spinal cord injury: A longitudinal study
Spinal cord injury (SCI) does not only produce a lack of sensory and motor function caudal to the level of injury, but it also leads to a progressive brain reorganization. Chronic SCI patients attempting to move their affected limbs present a significant reduction of brain activation in the motor cortex, which has been linked to the deafferentation. The aim of this work is to study the evolution of the motor-related brain activity during the first months after SCI. Eighteen subacute SCI patients were recruited to participate in bi-weekly experimental sessions during at least two months. Their EEG was recorded to analyze the temporal evolution of the event-related desynchronization (ERD) over the motor cortex, both during motor attempt and motor imagery of their paralyzed hands. The results show that the a and ß ERD evolution after SCI is negatively correlated with the clinical progression of the patients during the first months after the injury. This work provides the first longitudinal study of the event-related desynchronization during the subacute phase of spinal cord injury. Furthermore, our findings reveal a strong association between the ERD changes and the clinical evolution of the patients. These results help to better understand the brain transformation after SCI, which is important to characterize the neuroplasticity mechanisms involved after this lesion and may lead to new strategies for rehabilitation and motor restoration of these patients
3 mm GMVA Observations of Total and Polarized Emission from Blazar and Radio Galaxy Core Regions
We present total and linearly polarized 3 mm Global mm-VLBI Array images of a
sample of blazars and radio galaxies from the VLBA-BU-BLAZAR 7 mm monitoring
program designed to probe the innermost regions of active galactic nuclei (AGN)
jets and locate the sites of gamma-ray emission observed by the Fermi-LAT. The
lower opacity at 3 mm and improved angular resolution, on the order of 50
microarcseconds, allow us to distinguish features in the jet not visible in the
7 mm VLBA data. We also compare two different methods used for the calibration
of instrumental polarisation and we analyze the resulting images for some of
the sources in the sample.Comment: Polarised Emission from Astrophysical Jets, June 12-16, 2017,
