The study of the "Effects of Classical Management Theories on Current Management Practice in Nigeria" was carried out. This was to assess the extent of application of the Scientific Management, Administrative and Bureaucratic Theories in Nigerian Organizations and the effects of the application to the progress, development and growth of these Organizations. Descriptive research method, especially survey research was employed in carrying out the study. Three hypotheses were tested using chi square and linear regression.  The population of the study was 320 workers of the ANAMBRA MOTOR MANUFACTURING COMPANY LIMITED (ANAMMCO), EMENITE and NIGER GAS. A sample size of 177 was generated using the Taro yamene  formular for sample size determination, stratified sampling technique was used in the distribution of the questionnaire for data collection. Frequency tables using simple percentages were used for analyses of the data generated. The study revealed that the application of the Scientific management. Administrative and Bureaucratic Theories in management of various organizations contributed to waste, labour turnover, layoff of workers, slow pace of organizational growth and development and low productivity in the organizations. The study concluded that given the present performances of the Nigerian Organizations, more need to be done in the way the classical management theories were applied, such that workers will be more motivated to perform in a conducive work environment. It was recommended that, for organizations to achieve the objectives of effective and efficient productivity, they must understand, accommodate, embrace and promote people dynamics (nature, needs, values, motivations and general cultural political environmental differences). Organizations should also review periodically their rules, regulations and manuals to ensure current trends in the business environment. Finally, that organization should allow for initiative, innovations and workers participation in decision making. Keywords: classical management, management practice, Nigeri

The study of the “Effects of Inventory Management on Organizational Effectiveness in selected organizations in Enugu, was carried out, to asses the impact of proper inventory management on organizational performances in Emenite, Hardis & Dromedas and the Nigeria Bottling Company all in Enugu, Enugu State. Descriptive research method, especially survey and case study were employed in carrying out the study. The population of the study is six hundred and fifty eight (658). A sample size of two hundred and fouthy eight (248), was derived using the Taro Yamene formula for sample size determination from a finite population. Data were generated using questionnaire, oral interviews, observations, books, journals and the internet. Data were presented in tables and analyzed using simple percentages. Pearson product moment correlation coefficient and linear regression  was used in the hypotheses testing. From the analyses, it was discovered that irrespective of the fact that the organizations studied, painted the picture that they were applying the tenets of good inventory management, they from time to time run into the problems of inventory inadequacy. This consequently affected their production, leading to the scarcity of one brand of their products or the other, thereby affecting their profitability and consequential effectiveness negatively. The Findings indicate that there is significant relationship between good inventory management and organizational effectiveness. Inventory management has a significant effect on organizational productivity. There is highly positive correlation between good inventory management and organizational profitability. The study concluded that Inventory Management is very vital to the success and growth of organizations. The entire profitability of an organization is tied to the volume of products sold which has a direct relationship with the quality of the product Against this background the study recommended that Organizations should diversify their inventory system to suit specific needs of production, and that management should closely monitor and manipulate their inventory system to maintain production consistency for organizational profitability and effectiveness. The study of the “Effects of strategy Formulation and Implementation in Business Organizations in Enugu State (a study of ANAMMCO, EMENE. ENUGU), was carried out to assess the extent of application and workability of formulated strategies in the organization. Descriptive research method, specially survey and case study were employed in carrying out the study. The organization had a population of 185 workers, comprising of Management, Senior and Junior staff. A sample size of 106 was derived using the Freund and Williams formular for sample size determination from a finite population. The simple random sampling technique was used to determine the elements of the sample space. Data were collected through questionnaire administration, oral interviews, personal observations, books, journals and other publications. Data were analyzed using simple percentages and mean   responses. Based on the analyses, it was discovered that the organization looses sales as a result of change in consumption pattern of their customers. Secondly, that a well conceived and formulated strategy matched with appropriate structure increases productivity in the organization and thirdly, that behavioural and systemic resistance to strategic changes render strategy formulation ineffective in the organization. Against this background therefore, the following recommendations were adduced:- (1) That the top management should reduce uncertainties by adopting product line diversification strategy and strategic technological changes to be in tune with current consumption pattern in the Automobile Industry in Nigeria. (2) That management should integrate management functions through the process of organizations design in terms of strategy implementation. (3) That management should reduce behavioural and systemic resistance to strategic changes through appropriate organization structure and that workers should be well informed on the reasons for the changes. Community Policing in Nigeria

    Get PDF
One result of the Black Lives Matter movement has been to focus attention on police brutality in all its forms around the globe. Nowhere is the situation more dire than in Nigeria where the now infamous SARS (Special Anti-Robbery Squads) have, for years, inflicted excessive abuses on Nigeria’s citizenry. In response, many young people have taken to the streets to demand an end to the brutality in the now historic #ENDSARS nationwide protest. Community Policing in Nigeria is a timely and much-needed intervention into the policing problems in Nigeria. Written collaboratively by four authors with deep knowledge of Nigerian policy and of criminal justice more broadly, the book examines models of community policing around the world and points out best practices and flawed practices that may serve as guides for Nigeria and the rest of Africa. Community Policing in Nigeria is published in the United States by Virginia Tech Publishing and in Nigeria by Fourth Dimension Publishing.illustrato

The Influence of Globalization on National Education Policies in Nigeria

    Get PDF
Globalization is one of the most widely contested phenomena by scholars because of its complexity, elusive nature and attribution for its positive and negative outcomes. Historically, globalization and education are very interrelated. This paper will look at the influence of globalization on National Education Policies in Nigeria. The process of globalization began as early as the fourteenth century or at least with emergence of capitalism in the sixteenth century which resulted in the creation in Europe and USA of national education systems. This process continued and resulted in the transfer of these national education systems by colonial powers on other nations, and eventually to the establishment of the globalization institutions and instruments (WB, IMF, UNESCO, UNICEF). The paper will argue that Nigeria since the introduction of national system of education under colonialism, has always been a recipient of her education policies. The country has not been able to articulate/formulate an endogenous education policy. All opportunities (military to civilian, civilian to military) had always ended in the reproduction (expanding or contracting) of the existing policy. Nigerian education policy makers should try to domesticate globalization and related processes by purposefully interacting with globalization demands as policies are being formulated and implemented. The paper will be presented according to the following themes/sections. One will be conceptualizing globalization and coming up with explanations/definitions for a shared understanding of this complex concept. Two, will be the examination of all the education policies against adequacies and relevance to Nigeria’s needs. Three, will be recommendations on how to indigenize modern education policies

Objective: To explore and document the extent of sexual abuse of school children in Ghana and initiate an informed dialogue with all stakeholders for solutions. Method: This is a descriptive and exploratory survey. Information was collected from 49 public schools (490 school children, 116 parents and 49 head-teachers) from 4 out of the 110 districts in the country. Three sets of interview schedules were used to solicit information from school children, parents and head-teachers. In addition four focus group discussion sessions were held separately for school boys, school girls, male adults and female adults in each study area. Furthermore, relevant existing documents were reviewed for background information. Results: There is evidence suggesting the occurrence of sexual abuse in Ghana public schools. About 11.2% of the children who responded had been victims of either rape or defilement which is ‘the natural or unnatural carnal knowledge of any child under sixteen years of age’. The occurrence and severity of abuse are strongly related to gender. 92% of victims were female students. Conclusions: The current system of protecting children from sexual abuse in and outside of schools is ineffective. The study suggests strengthening of the existing protection system with community/school-based child protection teams

Background: Understanding the differences in learning styles among medical students and their impact on the learning processes may enhance better learning and knowledge acquisition that is necessary for improving learning outcomes. This study aimed at the determination of the learning style preferences of the University of Nigeria preclinical medical students and the impact they have on their academic performance. Materials and Methods: The study involved 158 third-year medical students (102 males and 56 females). Each student completed the VARK questionnaire (Version 7) comprising 16 questions that identified four different learning style preferences, namely V – visual, A – aural, R – read–write, and K – kinesthetic. The academic performance of the students was obtained from the results of their second MBBS professional examination. Analysis of data was done using Statistical Package for the Social sciences (SPSS) version 21; the percentages and charts of distribution for each VARK component were determined. The presence/absence of significant interactions between academic performance and learning style preferences was determined using Chi-square test. Results: The results showed that 30.4% of the students were unimodal (V-2.5%, A-7%, R-17.1% and K-3.8%), while 69.6% were multimodal in learning. With respect to gender, the males (70.6%) and females (67.9%) preferred multimodal learning, and both genders showed similar patterns in their preferences (read–write, followed by aural, kinesthetic, and visual). Visual learners exhibited the highest scores among unimodal learners, followed by kinesthetic, aural, and read–write learners, although the mean performance of multimodal learners (65%) was higher than those of unimodal learners (54%) (P < 0.001). Conclusion: A blend of V‑A‑R‑K instructional techniques would benefit most students. Students who are strongly unimodal in learning need to be specifically targeted with their unique learning style.
