The purpose of this paper is to underline the importance of historical research for interpreting theory by presenting our PhD research on the role of interpreters during the negotiation of Canadian Indian treaties in the 19th century. Firstly, the relation between history and theory in translation studies is emphasized, together with the need for a socio-cultural approach in interpreting studies. History is viewed as the first stage towards a “cultural turn” in interpreting. Secondly, the context of Canadian Indian treaties’ negotiations is examined, and some details about the interpreters are provided. Interpreters belong to two groups: the Métis and the missionaries, both Catholic and Protestant. To conclude, we propose two hypotheses on the active role that interpreters played during these negotiations. This study aims to contribute to a better understanding of the socio-cultural dimension of interpreting, especially when great cultural and social differences separate both parties, such as in community interpreting

The purpose of this paper is to analyze the role of interpreters during the negotiation of land surrender treaties signed with Canada’s First Nations from 1850 to 1923. Firstly, the context of the negotiations is examined and some preliminary information about the interpreters is provided. The role of interpreters includes the functions of “negotiator”, “informant” and “advisor”, going beyond simple linguistic mediation. Secondly, we present some theoretical considerations to conceive of interpreting as an instrument of assimilation and resistance, as well as a vehicle for transmitting values and not just content. By acknowledging and analyzing the power of the interpreter to become “visible” and intervene deliberately in the exchange, we are able to define interpreting as a social, cultural and ideological act

Understanding the use of emerging technologies in the agrifood industry: a case study

    Get PDF
The research aim is to understand how emerging technologies, and in particular the blockchain, affect business organization in the agrifood industry. In particular, it explores how decentration, distribution and digitalization ledged could be integrated in the precision agriculture in order to allow organizations to share information with stakeholder, to improve relationship with customers, and to develop a network with other firms. After, reviewing the IS literature on emerging technologies in agri-food industry, with peculiar reference to the blockchain technology for precision agriculture, it is analyzed the case of BioLu, a small innovative Italian farm located in Campa- nia Region. Our results shown how emerging technologies support precision ag- riculture through data collection and exploitation for entrepreneur (e.g., decision- making) and consumers (e.g., food traceability), rather than agrifood supply chain

The Role Of Affective Commitment In ERP Adoption: An Empirical Study

This study investigates the process of acceptance and use of Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems by its users, in order to understand the reasons behind their behavior. The Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) is used as a starting point for this work. In accordance with the TAM, two user’s beliefs, perceived usefulness and perceived ease of use, affect the behavioral intention to use a specific technology. Moreover, perceived ease of use also influences perceived usefulness. In literature, there are few prior research that focused on role of affective commitment in determining the process of acceptance and use of technology. These have shown that affective commitment positively affects the TAM constructs such as perceived usefulness and perceived ease of use. Unlike these prior research, we assume that affective commitment directly also affects both the behavioral intention to ERP system use and it moderates the relationships between perceived usefulness, perceived ease of use, and behavioral intention. A survey methodology was used to gather data from an Italian public transport firm. Findings show the importance of affective commitment in determining acceptance and use behavior by users. In particular, our results highlight that affective commitment does not moderate the relationships between perceived usefulness, perceived ease of use, and behavioral intention. Moreover, results shown that affective commitment affects behavioural intention to IT use trough user’s beliefs and, above all, it directly and positively affects behavioural intention. We discuss the implications of these results for theory and practice

Understanding the links between neuroscience and culture through a social network analysis: insights for IS research

    Get PDF
This study aims to understand the links between neuroscience and culture through a social network analysis. It was conducted a systematic literature review and a bibliometric analysis by using one online database, such as Scopus. A dataset of 78 publications was analyzed through citation and co-citation analysis. Results have shown the existence of a network of the 47 most cited sources and 2 topic clusters: the cluster of the new factors and new technologies to understand and describe the behavior of individuals and groups for the success and the cluster of the factors such as culture, trust, reciprocity, emotions, neural mechanisms, reason, which determine our way of being, our self, our behavior (especially organizational behavior), our choices, our cognitive process, our moral judgment in different situations. This paper contributes to the literature by presenting a comprehensive overview of neuroscience and culture in organization and managerial fields leads to further reflections on the use of information and communication technologies to obtain even more sophisticated and more predictive neuroscientific information of individuals’ behaviors

New Ways of Working through Emerging Technologies: A Meta-Synthesis of the Adoption of Blockchain in the Accountancy Domain

In an attempt to deepen how the way of working is changing due to the digital transformation, this research aims at understanding the process by which individuals adopt blockchain technology in accountancy. We conducted a meta-synthesis of the qualitative literature on the topic of blockchain technology adoption in the context of accountancy. Drawing from 10 systematically selected qualitative studies, we analyzed the process of blockchain technology adoption in accountancy, with particular reference to the impacts on accounting professionals, in terms of individual attitudes and behaviors, as well as organizations. Our findings contribute to the existing literature in at least two ways. First, our research explores the topic of blockchain adoption in the accountancy domain and stresses the relevance of the use of that emerging technology by accounting professionals and organizations, as well as the main problems that could limit its adoption and use. Second, we provide an overview of the process of blockchain technology adoption with specific reference to the questions of “why” and “how” blockchain is (or is not) adopted by accounting professionals and organizations, in an effort to shed light on a critical issue that has yet to be explored in accountancy

Background Redo surgery in patient who underwent aortic valve replacement with an aortic homograft can result technically challenging because of the massive calcification of the conduit. Case presentation We present a case of a patient who underwent open surgery on cardiopulmonary bypass assistance to implant a standard transcatheter aortic bioprosthesis through aortotomy in an off-label procedure and we discuss its safety and feasibility. Conclusions The combination of open cardiac surgery and open trans-aortic implant of a transcatheter prosthesis may reduce the surgical risk shrinking the technical difficulties that the implantation of a standard surgical prosthesis would have given

Explaing users’ technology acceptance through national cultural values in the hospital context

    Get PDF
Background: Current research demonstrates that health information technology can improve the efciency and quality of health services. However, many implementation projects have failed due to behavioural problems associated with technology usages, such as underuse, resistance, sabotage, and even rejection by potential users. Therefore, user acceptance was one of the main factors contributing to the success of health information technology implementation. However, research suggests that behavioural models do not universally hold across cultures. The present article considers national cultural values (power distance, uncertainty avoidance, individualism/collectivism, masculinity/femininity, and time orientation) as individual diference variables that afect user behaviour and incorporates them into the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) as moderators of technology acceptance relationships. Therefore, this research analyses which national cultural values afect technology acceptance behaviour in hospitals. Methods: The authors develop and test seven hypotheses regarding this relationship using the partial least squares (PLS) technique, a structural equation modelling method. The authors collected data from 160 questionnaires completed by clinicians and non-clinicians working in one hospital. Results: The fndings show that uncertainty avoidance, masculinity/femininity, and time orientation are the national cultural values that afect technology acceptance in hospitals. In particular, individuals with masculine cultural values, higher uncertainty avoidance, and a long-term orientation infuence behavioural intention to use technology. Conclusion: The bureaucratic model still decisively characterises the Italian health sector and consequently afects the choices of frms and workers, including the choice of technology adoption. Cultural values of masculinity, risk aversion, and long-term orientation afect intention to use through social norms rather than through perceived utility
