Population genetic structure of Culex quinquefasciatus in India by ISSR marker
AbstractObjectiveTo characterize the genetic structure of various populations of Culex quinquefasciatus (Cx. quinquefasciatus) from India representing different geoclimatic locations.MethodsInter simple sequence repeat (ISSR) markers were used. A set of 20 primers were screened with the laboratory populations of mosquito species. Finally the IS 40 primer was chosen based on the scorable banding pattern showing 100 percent polymorphism among the various populations. The statistical analysis was done using POPGENE 1.31 software. The consensus tree was generated based on UPGMA modified from NEIGHBOR procedure of PHYLIP Version 3.5.ResultsThe cluster analysis shows the main cluster which is divided into two sub cluster representing all the populations separated as per their phylogeographic and geoclimatic condition.ConclusionsThe findings will be helpful in understanding the population variation under different ecological conditions and development of effective vector management strategies
Determination of density and concentration from fluorescent images of a gas flow
A fluorescent image analysis procedure to determine the distribution of
species concentration and density in a gas flow is proposed. The fluorescent
emission is due to the excitation of atoms/molecules of a gas that is
intercepted by an electron blade. The intensity of the fluorescent light is
proportional to the local number density of the gas. When the gas flow is a
mixture of different species, this proportionality can be exploited to extract
the contribution associated to the species from the spectral superposition
acquired by a digital camera. This yields a method that simultaneously reveals
species concentrations and mass density of the mixture. The procedure is
applied to two under-expanded sonic jets discharged into a different gas
ambient - Helium into Argon and Argon into Helium - to measure the
concentration and density distribution along the jet axis and across it. A
comparison with experimental and numerical results obtained by other authors
when observing under-expanded jets at different Mach numbers is made with the
density distribution along the axis of the jet. This density distribution

A study of metopic sutures in human skulls
Abstract The present study has been carried out in fifty-one adult human skulls for metopic sutures in the department of anatomy, Nepalgunj Medical College, Chisapani. Metopic sutures were found in six skulls (11.46 %) This study showed higher incidences of incomplete metopic sutures (7.84 %). One skull showed double incomplete sutures (one to right of bregma and other in the middle of the frontal bone in the mid line), which was of, a very rare variety seen in frontal bone of (1.96 %), three skulls showed incomplete sutures (3.92 %). Though the number of the skulls was small, the study showed a rare morphological variety, which was well correlated with earlier workers
The Galactic Plane at faint X-ray fluxes - I: Properties and characteristics of the X-ray source population
We investigate the serendipitous X-ray source population revealed in
XMM-Newton observations targeted in the Galactic Plane within the region
315<l<45 and |b|<2.5 deg. Our study focuses on a sample of 2204 X-ray sources
at intermediate to faint fluxes, which were detected in a total of 116 XMM
fields and are listed in the 2XMMi catalogue. We characterise each source as
spectrally soft or hard on the basis of whether the bulk of the recorded counts
have energies below or above 2 keV and find that the sample divides roughly
equally (56%:44%) into these soft and hard categories. The X-ray spectral form
underlying the soft sources may be represented as either a power-law continuum
with Gamma~2.5 or a thermal spectrum with kT~0.5 keV, with N_H ranging from
10^{20-22} cm^{-2}. For the hard sources, a significantly harder continuum form
is likely, i.e., Gamma~1 with N_H=10^{22-24} cm^{-2}. For ~50% of the hard
sources, the inferred column density is commensurate with the total Galactic
line-of-sight value; many of these sources will be located at significant
distances across the Galaxy implying a hard band luminosity L_X>10^{32} erg/s,
whereas some will be extragalactic interlopers. >90% of the soft sources have
potential NIR (2MASS and/or UKIDSS) counterparts inside their error circles,
consistent with the dominant soft X-ray source population being relatively
nearby coronally-active stars. These stellar counterparts are generally
brighter than J=16, a brightness cutoff which corresponds to the saturation of
the X-ray coronal emission at L_X=10^{-3} L_{bol}. In contrast, the success
rate in finding likely IR counterparts to the hard X-ray sample is no more than
~15% down to J=16 and ~25% down to J=20, set against a rapidly rising chance
coincidence rate. The make-up of the hard X-ray source population, in terms of
the known classes of accreting and non-accreting systems, remains uncertain.Comment: 17 pages, 17 figures, accepted for publication in MNRA
Pairwise statistical significance of local sequence alignment using multiple parameter sets and empirical justification of parameter set change penalty
Background: Accurate estimation of statistical significance of a pairwise alignment is an important problem in sequence comparison. Recently, a comparative study of pairwise statistical significance with database statistical significance was conducted. In this paper, we extend the earlier work on pairwise statistical significance by incorporating with it the use of multiple parameter sets.
Results: Results for a knowledge discovery application of homology detection reveal that using multiple parameter sets for pairwise statistical significance estimates gives better coverage than using a single parameter set, at least at some error levels. Further, the results of pairwise statistical significance using multiple parameter sets are shown to be significantly better than database statistical significance estimates reported by BLAST and PSI-BLAST, and comparable and at times significantly better than SSEARCH. Using non-zero parameter set change penalty values give better performance than zero penalty.
Conclusion: The fact that the homology detection performance does not degrade when using multiple parameter sets is a strong evidence for the validity of the assumption that the alignment score distribution follows an extreme value distribution even when using multiple parameter sets. Parameter set change penalty is a useful parameter for alignment using multiple parameter sets. Pairwise statistical significance using multiple parameter sets can be effectively used to determine the relatedness of a (or a few) pair(s) of sequences without performing a time-consuming database search
A report of a rare congenital malformation in a Nepalese child with congenital pouch colon: a case report
Congenital pouch colon is one of rare congenital anomalies. We report a 3-day-old male child with congenital pouch colon who underwent a window colostomy but died because of overwhelming sepsis. Due to its rarity, many surgeons in our part of the world may not be aware of it, hence increasing the potential to its mismanagement. However, with simple keen observations, we can safely come to its diagnosis. The aim of this report is to bring attention to congenital pouch colon associated with anorectal malformation in our country, with a brief emphasis on an approach to its diagnosis and initial management
Differential expression of collectins in human placenta and role in inflammation during spontaneous Labor.

In the present study, we aimed to investigate their placental transcript synthesis, labor associated differential expression and localization at feto-maternal interface, and their functional implication in spontaneous labor. The study involved using feto-maternal interface (placental/decidual tissues) from two groups of healthy pregnant women at term (≥37 weeks of gestation), undergoing either elective C-section with no labor ('NLc' group, n = 5), or normal vaginal delivery with spontaneous labor ('SLv' group, n = 5). The immune function of SP-D, on term placental explants, was analyzed for cytokine profile using multiplexed cytokine array. SP-A, SP-D and MBL transcripts were observed in the term placenta. The 'SLv' group showed significant up-regulation of SP-D (p = 0.001), and down-regulation of SP-A (p = 0.005), transcripts and protein compared to the 'NLc' group. Significant increase in 43 kDa and 50 kDa SP-D forms in placental and decidual tissues was associated with the spontaneous labor (p<0.05). In addition, the MMP-9-cleaved form of SP-D (25 kDa) was significantly higher in the placentae of 'SLv' group compared to the 'NLc' group (p = 0.002). Labor associated cytokines IL-1α, IL-1β, IL-6, IL-8, IL-10, TNF-α and MCP-1 showed significant increase (p<0.05) in a dose dependent manner in the placental explants treated with nSP-D and rhSP-D.
