    The Unique Effect of Depreciation on Earnings Properties: Persistence and Value Relevance of Earnings

    Prior studies document high persistence of earnings is a desirable earningsā€™ attribute and associated with high value relevance of earnings. Nevertheless, other studies indicate negative earnings components depress persistence of earnings. Depreciation expense constitutes a major negative earnings component for most firms. Larger depreciation could represent higher cost of utilizing resources; however, it could also represent a higher level of capital improvements and conservative accounting choice. We find firms reporting higher depreciation and amortization expense (High DP) outperform other firms (Low DP) in terms of future operating cash flows. Though the persistence of earnings is lower for High DP firms, the stock markets actually place higher valuation weight of their earnings. Our study contributes to research on earnings attributes and the role of accounting information in the stock markets. We identify potential biases of overly reliance on the persistence of earnings to evaluate a firmā€™s performance and to predict the stock market reactions

    Epidemiology and Clinical Peculiarities of Norovirus and Rotavirus Infection in Hospitalized Young Children with Acute Diarrhea in Taiwan, 2009

    Background/PurposeAcute diarrhea is one of the most common morbidities in pediatrics worldwide. We conducted a study to investigate the incidence of norovirus in young children hospitalized with acute diarrhea in Taiwan and its clinical peculiarity compared with rotavirus gastroenteritis.MethodsBetween January and December, 2009, patients younger than 5 years and admitted to hospital with acute diarrhea were randomly selected; and their stool samples were collected and tested for presence of rotavirus and norovirus by enzyme immunoassay and reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction, respectively. The clinical manifestations and laboratory findings of the enrolled patients were analyzed.ResultsA total of 989 cases were enrolled with a mean age of 21.6 Ā± 13.7 months and a male proportion of 56.0%. Rotavirus and norovirus was detected in 20.2% and 14.6% of all patients, respectively. Genogroup II was the predominant strain of norovirus (80.6%). Children aged 6-36 months accounted for the majority of patients positive for rotavirus and norovirus (73.0% and 81.3%, respectively). The incidences of norovirus and rotavirus infection were higher during winter and early spring. Most patients with rotavirus and norovirus diarrhea experienced vomiting (74.9% vs. 74.8%, respectively) and fever (94.7% vs. 71.3%, respectively).ConclusionMost young diarrheal patients presenting with vomiting were likely to have norovirus or rotavirus infection. Patients with norovirus diarrhea experienced an absence of, or low-grade fever and longer duration of vomiting compared with those positive for rotavirus infection. A family history of current gastroenteritis may suggest the possibility of norovirus infection

    Pilot Study of Delayed ICOS/ICOS-L Blockade With alphaCD40 to Modulate Pathogenic Alloimmunity in a Primate Cardiac Allograft Model

    Background: Inducible costimulator (ICOS) is rapidly upregulated with T-cell stimulation and may represent an escape pathway for T-cell costimulation in the setting of CD40/CD154 costimulation blockade. Induction treatment exhibited no efficacy in a primate renal allograft model, but rodent transplant models suggest that the addition of delayed ICOS/ICOS-L blockade may prolong allograft survival and prevent chronic rejection. Here, we ask whether ICOS-Ig treatment, timed to anticipate ICOS upregulation, prolongs NHP cardiac allograft survival or attenuates pathogenic alloimmunity. Methods: Cynomolgus monkey heterotopic cardiac allograft recipients were treated with alphaCD40 (2C10R4, d0-90) either alone or with the addition of delayed ICOS-Ig (d63-110). Results: Median allograft survival was similar between ICOS-Ig + alphaCD40 (120 days, 120-125 days) and alphaCD40 (124 days, 89-178 days) treated animals, and delayed ICOS-Ig treatment did not prevent allograft rejection in animals with complete CD40 receptor coverage. Although CD4(+) TEM cells were decreased in peripheral blood (115 +/- 24) and mLNs (49 +/- 1.9%) during ICOS-Ig treatment compared with monotherapy (214 +/- 27%, P = 0.01; 72 +/- 9.9%, P = 0.01, respectively), acute and chronic rejection scores and kinetics of alloAb elaboration were similar between groups. Conclusions: Delayed ICOS-Ig treatment with the reagent tested is probably ineffective in modulating pathogenic primate alloimmunity in this model

    Advance Care Planning in Asia: A Systematic Narrative Review of Healthcare Professionalsā€™ Knowledge, Attitude, and Experience

    Objective: The value of advance care planning (ACP) for patients with life-limiting illnesses is widely recognized but Asian health care professionals' (HCPs') perspectives on ACP have received little systematic attention. We aim to synthesize evidence regarding Asian HCPsā€™ knowledge of, attitudes toward, and experiences with ACP. Design: Systematic review with narrative synthesis and stepwise thematic analysis. Setting and Participants: HCPs in southern, eastern, and southeastern Asia. Methods: Studies from inception to September 2019 were identified from English-language searches of Embase, MEDLINE, Web of Science, and Google Scholar with reference-chaining and hand-searching. Two investigators independently screened and assessed the risk of bias in all original studies reporting HCPsā€™ knowledge of, attitudes toward, and experiences with ACP, including their perspectives toward barriers and facilitators of ACP. Results: Fifty-one studies were included; 42 were quantitative, 43 had been conducted in high-income countries, and 36 were of good quality. Twenty-six studies operationalized ACP as the completion of an advance directive rather than a value-exploration process. Thirteen studies reported knowledge, 44 attitudes, 29 experiences, and 36 barriers and facilitators of ACP. Asian HCPs addressed the essential role of families in ACP. They acknowledge the importance of ACP but rarely engage the patient in it. They considered ACP difficult to initiate, partly because of their lack of knowledge and skills in ACP, personal uneasiness to conduct ACP, fear of conflicts with family members and their legal consequences, and the lack of a standard system for ACP. Most studies indicated HCPsā€™ low engagement and late initiation of ACP. Conclusions and Implications: Despite acknowledging its importance, Asian HCPs felt that engaging in ACP is challenging. Capacity building for ACP in Asia should focus on culturally adapting ACP models concerning the essential role of the family in Asia, education for HCPs and the public, and providing institutional support for ACP

    Acceptability and Use of the Diaphragm and ReplensĀ® Lubricant Gel for HIV Prevention in Southern Africa

    The acceptability and use of the diaphragm and lubricant gel were assessed as part of a large randomized controlled trial to determine the effectiveness of the methods in womenā€™s HIV acquisition. 2,452 intervention-arm women were enrolled at five Southern African clinics and followed quarterly for 12ā€“24Ā months. Acceptability and use data were collected by face-to-face interviews at Month 3 and Exit. Participants were ā€œvery comfortableā€ with the physical mechanics of diaphragm use throughout the trial, and approval of the gel consistency, quantity and the applicator was high. At Exit, consistent disclosure of use (AOR 1.97, 95% CI: 1.10ā€“3.55); an overall high diaphragm rating (AOR 1.84, 95% CI: 1.45ā€“2.34) and perception of partner approval (AOR 1.75, 95% CI: 1.35ā€“2.26) were the most significant acceptability factors independently associated with consistent use. Despite being female-initiated, disclosure of use to male partners and his perceived approval of the products were factors significantly associated with their consistent use

    Biofeedback for training balance and mobility tasks in older populations: a systematic review

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Context</p> <p>An effective application of biofeedback for interventions in older adults with balance and mobility disorders may be compromised due to co-morbidity.</p> <p>Objective</p> <p>To evaluate the feasibility and the effectiveness of biofeedback-based training of balance and/or mobility in older adults.</p> <p>Data Sources</p> <p>PubMed (1950-2009), EMBASE (1988-2009), Web of Science (1945-2009), the Cochrane Controlled Trials Register (1960-2009), CINAHL (1982-2009) and PsycINFO (1840-2009). The search strategy was composed of terms referring to biofeedback, balance or mobility, and older adults. Additional studies were identified by scanning reference lists.</p> <p>Study Selection</p> <p>For evaluating effectiveness, 2 reviewers independently screened papers and included controlled studies in older adults (i.e. mean age equal to or greater than 60 years) if they applied biofeedback during repeated practice sessions, and if they used at least one objective outcome measure of a balance or mobility task.</p> <p>Data Extraction</p> <p>Rating of study quality, with use of the Physiotherapy Evidence Database rating scale (PEDro scale), was performed independently by the 2 reviewers. Indications for (non)effectiveness were identified if 2 or more similar studies reported a (non)significant effect for the same type of outcome. Effect sizes were calculated.</p> <p>Results and Conclusions</p> <p>Although most available studies did not systematically evaluate feasibility aspects, reports of high participation rates, low drop-out rates, absence of adverse events and positive training experiences suggest that biofeedback methods can be applied in older adults. Effectiveness was evaluated based on 21 studies, mostly of moderate quality. An indication for effectiveness of visual feedback-based training of balance in (frail) older adults was identified for postural sway, weight-shifting and reaction time in standing, and for the Berg Balance Scale. Indications for added effectiveness of applying biofeedback during training of balance, gait, or sit-to-stand transfers in older patients post-stroke were identified for training-specific aspects. The same applies for auditory feedback-based training of gait in older patients with lower-limb surgery.</p> <p>Implications</p> <p>Further appropriate studies are needed in different populations of older adults to be able to make definitive statements regarding the (long-term) added effectiveness, particularly on measures of functioning.</p

    Attenuation of Skeletal Muscle and Renal Injury to the Lower Limb following Ischemia-Reperfusion Using mPTP Inhibitor NIM-811.

    INTRODUCTION: Operation on the infrarenal aorta and large arteries of the lower extremities may cause rhabdomyolysis of the skeletal muscle, which in turn may induce remote kidney injury. NIM-811 (N-metyl-4-isoleucine-cyclosporine) is a mitochondria specific drug, which can prevent ischemic-reperfusion (IR) injury, by inhibiting mitochondrial permeability transition pores (mPTP). OBJECTIVES: Our aim was to reduce damages in the skeletal muscle and the kidney after IR of the lower limb with NIM-811. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Wistar rats underwent 180 minutes of bilateral lower limb ischemia and 240 minutes of reperfusion. Four animal groups were formed called Sham (receiving vehicle and sham surgery), NIM-Sham (receiving NIM-811 and sham surgery), IR (receiving vehicle and surgery), and NIM-IR (receiving NIM-811 and surgery). Serum, urine and histological samples were taken at the end of reperfusion. NADH-tetrazolium staining, muscle Wet/Dry (W/D) ratio calculations, laser Doppler-flowmetry (LDF) and mean arterial pressure (MAP) monitoring were performed. Renal peroxynitrite concentration, serum TNF-alpha and IL-6 levels were measured. RESULTS: Less significant histopathological changes were observable in the NIM-IR group as compared with the IR group. Serum K+ and necroenzyme levels were significantly lower in the NIM-IR group than in the IR group (LDH: p<0.001; CK: p<0.001; K+: p = 0.017). Muscle mitochondrial viability proved to be significantly higher (p = 0.001) and renal function parameters were significantly better (creatinine: p = 0.016; FENa: p<0.001) in the NIM-IR group in comparison to the IR group. Serum TNF-alpha and IL-6 levels were significantly lower (TNF-alpha: p = 0.003, IL-6: p = 0.040) as well as W/D ratio and peroxynitrite concentration were significantly lower (p = 0.014; p<0.001) in the NIM-IR group than in the IR group. CONCLUSION: NIM-811 could have the potential of reducing rhabdomyolysis and impairment of the kidney after lower limb IR injury
